- In the design studio over at Krook & Tjäder in Gothenburg, the 3D-printers are pretty much running continuously. Printing design mockups, prototypes and small-scale models.
“In the old days, we used cardboard to create mockups. Nowadays we use 3D-printing instead. It’s a natural part of the sculptural process of designing objects. I need that tool to work as a designer”, says Joel Karlsson, CEO Krook & Tjäder Design, Gothenburg.
Joel is currently working on the design for a seating module for Stockholm’s new bus stop called Night & Day. For the mockup he prints parts in full scale to investigate the function, design and seating comfort. It’s a part of the design process where the 3D-printed parts become a life size sketch of the object.
The most common filament used is biobased PLA because of the excellent printing capabilities and nontoxic fumes. A majority of the parts for the mockup are printed in Add:North’s Textura™ filament. A biobased PLA with plant fibers that provide a unique matte surface finish. When it comes to more functional parts, ABS and TPU are used.
Thanks, Krook & Tjäder for the inspiration, www.krooktjader.se
