    You have a really nice presentation style - calm & clear - so why would you teach unnecessarily complicated operations? Ripping a 2x4 doesn't need a edge selected, copied, and moved as a guide when you can simply Push/Pull the side face in 2". The beauty of SketchUp is how simply it can do things - to complicate it is madness.

    • @thetimbertailor
      @thetimbertailor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Adam, thanks for commenting... you make an excellent point... I re-watched the segment at around 8:00 and it's embarrassing to admit that I neglected to cover the straightforward method for 'ripping' the 2x4 that you describe in your comment. I don't even have a good excuse for not showing the push/pull method first :-( My best hope is that the oversight doesn't cause viewers to miss out on other stuff in the video... 'cuz, as you say, SketchUp's main attraction IS its simplicity!
      Best,
      Matt

      No worries - I kept watching! As an aside, another method I don't think you covered that I've just discovered (I've been playing inefficiently with SketchUp for years and am finally trying to learn it properly) is using the Follow Me tool - much easier than Push/Pulling a bevel cut or similar down a long length. Cheers

      Adam,
      It's great when you feel momentum gain behind you as you work to learn SketchUp properly, isn't it? I've pinned your comments to the top for this video because they add to the value of the video for all viewers... thank you!
      I really like your tip for using Push/Pull along a long, straight edge... I didn't cover it because I never thought of it... but I'll definitely keep it in mind for future modeling.
      Not sure if you've 'discovered' the great benefit of using a 3D mouse for modeling with SketchUp yet but if you haven't and really want to improve your modeling workflow I HIGHLY recommend you check into models available from 3D Connexion! There's a link to my Amazon Influencer's page in the video description above that shows the SpaceMousePro that I use in case you're interested. It also shows the Space Navigator model I started with some years back and upgraded to the Pro (with benefit of added buttons) once I realized how much easier/faster modeling was when using it.

      Matt

    This is now over 2 years old but just as relevant today. I like your sketchUp way of doing things Digital Jobsite. I'm new to 3d and I find it easier to build in Sketchup as if I was working in real life. I.E building the components one by one as if they were real then putting them in place. Mind you I am still glad you can copy and then edit one component to edit then all. Thanks for sharing, this helped me a lot 5⭐'s 👍

    Man, every part of this video is just great, and music mix can't be better. Nice choice of music too - and I tell it as a musician. I can't believe that there are people that can't use their ears, and tell the difference between loud and soft :) Also, when you build something, this approach of putting objects to the floor is just so good that it's a touch of genius. When I saw it I told to myself - that's the way I'll draw in sketchup and I sent this video to a friend. Bravo!

    • @hdagelic
      @hdagelic 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      hmm... I got it - you have music in one channel, and speech in the other, so the mix depends on the speaker balance. But it's perfect in center balance.

      hdagelic, I'm glad my approach for modeling objects 'on the floor' struck a chord with you (especially since you're a musician :-) ... that kind of revelation should help make modeling quicker and more enjoyable. My boards are not push pulling like yours when I do a line or rectangle why would that be. If it is a component would that make a difference ?

    • @NextLevelCarpentry
      @NextLevelCarpentry ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Brandon, Make sure that you're in "Component Edit" mode (same goes for Groups) and select an individual face to use the push/pull tool. That's because the tool can only work on a single face. When you initially create a 'board', the geometry isn't contained in a Component or Group 'box' so you can manipulate individual faces. Once you contain the whole 'board' within a Component or Group, you have to double click to get 'inside' the entity to manipulate it as 'raw' geometry again. See if that helps... I'm betting your hunch is right.😎

  • @brandondoherty7457
    @brandondoherty7457 ปีที่แล้ว

    When I select one of my boards all of the other boards copy what I'm doing to the selected board.

    Can't figure out. I use ready stud component from Warehouse. I was able to notch it what I wanted. Problem is that if I add another same component, it also has that notch. How to add another new component then, or cut the notch differently. I used double select and move tool. ???

    • @NextLevelCarpentry
      @NextLevelCarpentry 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Michal... the Component is functioning exactly as it's supposed to. The simplest way to make a new component with a different notch, for example, is to Copy/Paste the Component you're working with then select the Copy and Right Click>Make Unique. You can do this as many times as necessary. Remember that now each Component you've made will behave like all others copied from it. Hope that helps.

    Just came across this video. Amazing job I just have one question on putting an arch in. I'm having trouble with it not filling in the arch and I didn't see part 2 mention it. Hopefully someone can help me out with this.

    • @NextLevelCarpentry
      @NextLevelCarpentry 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you like the video... thanks! Any time an arch, arc or anything else doesn't 'fill in', it's because the ends aren't connected. Even if it's missing just a SINGLE pixel, SketchUp doesn't recognize it as a plane and leaves it as just line segments. Zoom way in and inspect both ends and you can usually spot the problem and connect the lines to form a plane. Hope that helps...

    - or trying to be cute with wording,

      +Matt Jackson --- you are not in the least clumsy...
      if it ain't broke don't fix it!
      The only thing I see a small problem is the level of the music, NOT because it is that bad, because it is not, but if watching your video while the rest of the house is asleep, one must turn it up high enough to hear your voice and then the music becomes prominent...
      So turn that down to 75% of what it is now and the rest of your improving will come naturally by doing more and more videos, but if you never improved that part, you would still win hands-down on more than 90% of what's out there!
      I spend much of my time attacking everyone who is mediocre with an in-the-face-approach, rarely am I able to give credit where it's due!
