Just How Hyped Should You Be About 6G?

  • In 2019, after years of waiting, 5G wireless networks and devices finally became a reality. So, when are we getting 6G? C’mon, we're bored already.

To state the obvious, 6G doesn’t exist yet-but that doesn’t mean people aren’t already thinking about how to make it a reality. 6G, short for the sixth generation of wireless technology, promises to be incredible.
The numbers that get thrown around when industry leaders theorize about what it could do are mind boggling. Numbers like download speeds up to a terabyte per second, and latency as low as 0.1 millisecond.
And when the day finally comes and all the ads for phones and carriers have a giant 6 emblazoned across them, just remember how 5G was an incremental change at first and be ready for the next generation to follow the same pattern.

Heck, not even that - just the infrastructure behind it. Who cares if the "phone to tower" signal is 5 Gbit, if the cell network's internet connection is only 200 Mbit?
My home cable internet is theoretically 1.2 Gbit. But that doesn't matter since the modem only has a 1 Gbit Ethernet port. The the fact that speed test results show ~900 Mbit download for me is irrelevant when Steam, Microsoft Windows Updates, etc, only get 200-300 Mbit.

  • @rikachiu

6G is for application that will become possible because of it. People didn't think they needed Uber and regular taxis are fine, now they can't live without it. Uber required ubiquitos GPS, smartphones and at least 3G connectivity for it to function.
6G will mean driverless cars for everyone driving at 200+ kmh in high ways bumper to bumper because all cars are speaking and avoiding each other instantly in a large AI swarm set up like you see with drones today. Once you get hooked on that you'll know that consumers will be very much interested in terabit/s speeds. And of course your government too.

It'll be something more specialized ai would be taught to help compensate with. Especially with the vehicles being more and more able to communicate data and statistic information with each other. I just ran a speed test. T-Mobile 4g in my area is giving me about 4 mbps. That’s pathetic. What will 5G give me? 5 mbps? It’s just really frustrating that no matter how much they advertise, real world results are a fraction of what they say it is. The only time I get fast service is really late at night when everyone is asleep.

I can't see 5G or 6G ever being rolled out beyond the Cities because of the poor signal coverage from each antenna. Let's face it, they can't be bothered to even roll out 4G to the extremes of the country, and that's dead easy by comparison.
The best we can hope for is to finally get 4G coverage to an acceptable level, with 5G available for the lucky few.
5G isn't an improvement or incremental change on 4G, to do that it would need to provide the same coverage as 4G, but it doesn't.
I just wish these people would stop implementing half baked solutions that replace the last half baked solution. Just implement 4G properly before even thinking about anything else!
