Trying to compete with china on the fronts where china is already a world leader is waste of both human capital and time. We need to produce ourselves the stuff we import from china and at the same time we should export to the world the stuff where china didnt step in or still in process. This way we can secure some markets for ourselves. Packaged or processed foods, organic fertiliser, pharmaceuticals are some of those sectors.

Completely agreed. But few days ago few articles pointed out that why India is so keen to challenge China. Its not that some countries going against Chinese or India's push to nationalism for politics, the real reason is the sectors China is OP, really OP, in.
Let's just take a simple example of mobiles. The push by Micromax, aided by PMP, to Make In India is still not being able to bring mobiles like MI, whereas MI runs MI, Vivo, OPPO, realme etc. The simple reason being that Micromax is not in position to order the volume which Chinese companies can, add to that the transportation challenges(cost+security). Also the most of the manufacturers are in China
So to simply sum up, Chinese edge can only be gained when despite economy bleeding, unemployment high etc, the lucratives to industry does not die down. The already strengthened sectors needs reforms like farm bills, but issues improperly managed will slow the pace, dragging us more away from our target
P.S. - I got a NatGeo ad on Indian assembling unit of OPPO😁🤣
