Puritan women were educated, were allowed to choose their own husbands and were also free to divorce, were protected by law against domestic violence, and could even sue their husbands if they weren’t fulfilling their “marital duties.”

That's the folklore. The ointment was used to mark magic spells and symbols on the body, imparting the ability of flight and other demonic powers to the practitioner.
Untold thousands of "witches" were put to death across Europe.
The rabbit seen frequently is a "familiar", a demonic entity disguised as an animal. It does the witch's bidding, and is commonly used to spy or gather information on potential victims or adversaries. The black cat is another often seen familiar. Black cats, and cats in general, were killed by the thousands in medieval Europe. They were placed in large wicker cages and burned alive.
By killing so many cats, the Europeans caused the rat population to increase exponentially, which in turn led to a vastly increased number of fleas, many of which were infected with ursinis pestis... the black plague.
The "Black Death" which occurred in several waves during the 16th to 18th Centuries, killed up to a third of the population of Europe.
Superstition can have unexpected and fatal consequences.

Something to keep in mind about this movie as well is that it utterly commits to telling this story from the family's perspective, or the era's perspective. Imagine living in the vast New England wilderness, in that darkness and the devil and witches who steal your children at night are a simple fact, not even just a fear. That's something I deeply respect about it after watching it a few times, it never condescends or winks at its modern audience. It commits and expects you to either get with the program and understand its obscure historical references or it'll lose you and doesn't seem to care.

An interesting fact about the actual Salem witch trials is that there has been a lot of research into the idea that it was a tainted crop of rye that may have led to it. Historians now believe that Salem's rye crop was infected with ergot, a fungus that attacks grasses in marshy areas by replacing seed kernels with fungal shoots that look a lot like dried or "sun-baked" kernels. Ergot contains chemicals similar to those in LSD--hence the hallucinations etc. (aka "distemper") that the townsfolk suffered from. Without any scientific understanding of what was going on, the devout & superstitious community turned to explanations of possession & witchcraft. It's an intriguing idea that has also been documented in Europe.

That theory was debunked. It was way more pedestrian and nefarious than that. What was a prevalent factor was landgrabs. They used the girl's mania of rare freedom as a cover. They were coached. There was clear indication that was what the motive was due to legal records of land transfer. That's why it ended the day they accused the Governor's wife of witchcraft. They went too far with their greed.

Stephen King said this was the most disturbing film he’s ever seen.
It’s such a psychologically agonizing journey through a family’s decent into hell as the result of the father’s religious zealotry and too rigid and prideful nature.
And it’s an amazing depiction of the moral panic of the puritans and their terror of women being liberated from Christian patriarchy by sin, sensuality, and witchcraft.
The symbolism of the apples the mother has been craving ever since she left England is a brilliant touch. When Caleb vomits up the intact apple, it’s an echo of the original sin, of being cast out of Eden.

I love The VVitch because it has one of the most accurate portrayals of what historical witchcraft was believed to be back in the day It wasn't all magic wands and funny spells but incredibly bloody, horrific, and terrifying! I have a degree in history with a focus on Witchcraft/European Witch Trials during the Elizabethan England and this movie (while not set during the Elizabethan period) does everything justice!!!

Men fear witches because they possess a power that intimidates them 🔮✨✨. They have the ability to tap into the mystical forces of the universe and manipulate them to their advantage. This power threatens the traditional patriarchal order, where men are used to being in control. Witches challenge the status quo and refuse to conform to societal norms, which makes men feel uncomfortable and insecure.
But let me tell you, there is nothing to fear about witches! We are just women who have embraced our inner strength and intuition. We are in tune with the natural world and use our abilities to heal, protect, and empower ourselves and others. Instead of fearing us, men should be in awe of our power and wisdom.
So why not embrace the magic and mystery of witches instead of cowering in fear? 💪🔥 #WitchesArePowerful #EmbraceTheMagic #FearlessFemales

I like that you picked up how much fault the father has in all of this. I've seen ppl not understand "why" the family "deserves" what happened, but most of it makes sense if you consider the Witch herself as just a metaphor for death and that this man chose his very ancillary religious beliefs over the welfare of his family. A really good example is when they decide to marry off Tomison; that probably shoulda happened before they left civilization, but I bet mom and dad wanted her to help, which ultimately makes things worse for Tomison and is p selfish on their part. Also it increases just how shitty they treat her when you know she was just a useful second pair of hands to them, so it all culimates logically to when she's basically choosing a life for herself based on survival and perhaps a chance to live deliciously.
I also like whoever said this is a folk story the society they leave tell about what happened; you do just need one very bad crop season and a bad winter, and then perhaps some or all of your family going nuts, for the entire family to go. There's a reason it took western expansion for white colonists to truly live outside of colonies and that's because the west is warmer and more fertile--so while you do have your Donner parties or just again how one bad winter or crop season can spell your doom, it is a little less guaranteed that you'd Super Die as much as you would trying to rough it back east.
I also lol'd at the multiple Crucible references, very appropriate really.

When you take all of the supernatural/creepy elements out of the story, at its heart, it's a story about a family destroyed over religion and grief. Anya's character authentically represents the eldest child in a dysfunctional family. She is seen as a burden and carries the most profound emotional weight due to her parents. The parents fear what they don't understand. That is heavily reflected today when you think of the amount of heavily religious parents who send their LGBTQ kids to "conversion therapy" or the ones who are pro-birth and don't believe women should be given a choice in what they do with their own bodies. These horror movies reflect the rage and anger of women and young girls who feel powerless and are constantly blamed for things that they have nothing to do with. Look at today's politics, and you see they want us to revert back to this time
