I wondered if she was an escort providing all social services, including non-sexual ones, like pretending to be his daughter who had passed away - but in an indulgent grief process, rather than an incestuous one.
Hong Chau played Elsa. To give you an idea of how much she killed this, the role was originally described as "stoic Scandinavian woman". And she got the role. They didn't even change the name. Killer.
And she was so good that Dominique Crenn, a food consultant and a restauranteuse that was on creative team for this movie, offered her a job in one of her restaurants.
I still think Tyler knew he was dying, but he still took photos of his food on his phon. There was no internet or phone service, so he was not sharing the photos. He knew he was taking them for nothing, but still had to take them. Just so Tyler of him.
I love this film, especially what it says about the effect on creators by both people who dissect and overanalyze art and those who just consume or even perform art with no thought at all. Some fans of things can feel so entitled.
Alanda, the STAR of this movie, Elsa, who you loved so much, was played by Hong Chau! She blew up this year with this role and also her role in The Whale with Brendan Fraser! She was nominated for the Academy Award for the Best Supporting Actress for The Whale :)
The Cheeseburger scene was so intense for the cast because it's actually the first time that someone actually ate real food and not inedible prop food. John Leguizamo ended up ordering burgers and fries for the cast. And I'm not going to lie: I ended up having a huge cheeseburger craving that I had to go to the store and get everything I needed to fix my own, even cooking the onions like he did. And it was So. GOOD.
The Menu was such a surprise but wow was it such a hilarious and intelligent movie. Ralph served, Anya ate, and Hong Chau left no crumbs. Happy Tuesday, good to see you! He went there knowing he would die, he would've been the happiest person in that room. Getting humiliated by the very person he looked upto to the point he had to take his own life due to the sheer embarrassment was truly satisfying.
i watched The Menu for the 1st time a couple days ago and have been obsessed with it since then. It reminds me that people who are idolized are also struggling to maintain. If someone/society continues to shit on you, no matter how great you are/ or seem to be you'll break eventually. I broke down at the cheeseburger as soon as Slowik went from menacing to just pure server energy. He asked her everything Erin wanted for her burger and promised the absolute best of exactly what she ordered. As an aspiring filmmaker i couldnt desire anything more. I dont need dishonest and power hungry critics, obsessive fans, or fake positivity. Id like if ppl just give their thoughts, good or bad, and get the fck on with their life. I dont need it deconstructed by other non-creators and avant garde bs to politicize or sensationalize it. If art is whatever intellectual bs that Slowic was serving, then im not an artist, im an entertainer.
When I saw the poster, I thought it was a comedy drama film about a food critic and his girlfriend try to oust a world class Chef for being a fraud. Then I learned it's a dark comedy horror film. I was even surprised to learn it got snubbed at this year's Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, etc.
I know, right?! Not a single nomination in any category! You'd think it'd at least get nominated for Best Cinematography or Best Production Design for the food. I mean, _Everything Everywhere All at Once_ is gonna win Best Picture for sure, but I still think _The Menu_ deserved a nod.
All that tells me is the people in control of nominations fits the description of the greedy takers who needed to be s'mored. Clearly, they were butt hurt about it.

Yess as much as this movie is trying to comment on elitism and how everyone’s a critic nowadays, it’s also a movie that doesn’t take itself so seriously. Everyone in the movie is a caricature of real people except for Margot/Erin and it’s hilarious!

I enjoyed seeing how quickly Alanda picked up on the deathly cues coming for our diners, and then shifting to the driving plot question for the rest of the film: Can Margot somehow escape? I couldn't help but notice another recent film swimming in the same waters with The Menu. "Knives Out: Glass Onion" shares many tenuous, but curious connections here. Both films summon their participants together for uniquely personal reasons by a commandeering, murderous zealot with an inflated sense of purpose -- and most importantly, living one big lie at the plot's center. Also both protagonists are women who "shouldn't be there" and must solve their own murders(potential) before the megalomaniac completes his plan. I really enjoyed how both of these films skirted the "wrong guy in the wrong place" trope and just allowed Margot (and Janelle Monae's Helen) to carefully reveal themselves so each could walk away with her integrity intact. The sets employed preposterous prop designs and on-the-nose theatrics to skewer attendees while dazzling our eyes and palette. Now, I did use "tenuous" to describe the films' parallels, so obviously the stakes rise to gory, bloody levels in The Menu as it flirts with horror; nonetheless, a big fireball engulfs all the plot machinery, pomposity, pretension and deceit of both films -- leaving viewers with closeups of both leading ladies, embattled and tired but still managing a cryptic smile to end the movie.
Love this movie to death. I thought it was interesting that you concluded that that one couple’s daughter offed herself. I didn’t think that was the case but yeah that husband was a certified CREEP.

This was such an enjoyable experience in theaters. I've rewatched it several times and have enjoyed the courses over and over again. There's no way in hell I could have been one of the chefs in the kitchen. I would have been busting out laughing trying to keep a serious face while yelling we love you chef and so on

I swear, my day is instantly brighter the moment I see that hair and smile on my screen and feel her radiant energy. I'd bet any amount of money that NOBODY can be in anything BUT a wonderful mood while watching an Alanda reaction.
This felt like how it would be to witness the dark decent of a once inspired artist. But not taken too seriously, like him having John Leguizamo die because he hated one of his movies he saw on a day off is a horrifically twisted level of petty.

This was such a good time especially as someone who loves watching cooking shows this was perfect for me. I really expected it to be some cannibal stuff since horror and eating usually means that but thankfully it wasn’t.
You immediately picked up on what the movie creator wanted the audience to pick up on I think. I'm not sure if I have the story 100% right, but the film make Mr apparently had this experience where he dined in a situation similar to this one...I think he was ok off money wise but not ultra rich at the time...and he was watching the boat leave the island and he's like...'yeh these people are putting a lot of faith in this staff just to be fine with the boat leaving. Rich people are very confident in any situation.' I think that's how part of the story went.
I am surprised I enjoyed this movie so much! Going to actually give it a watch myself! Chief Assistant really stole the show and that burger looked too good for its own damn good
I worked food service for 13 years. Trust me when i tell you, i understood this satire SO MUCH. i had actually just quit my job when i watched this, and IT ME HIT WHERE IT MEANT TO. Lol for real. 😂 especially the end. I was slowly losing my ability to give any effs about customers at all, and i slowly started to honestly hate cooking or making good meals at home. I was slowly losing my sanity, too, and I'm so glad i got out. I have a new job now, and I'm no longer working with food. I can go back to appreciating it like i used to, in the very silly Art People way as these villains. 😂😂
I like the idea that the theme is: Function and ingenuity, without life. In any skilled profession, or in any Walk of Life, if you are not careful, you will displace living for functionality. It felt like a lot of them were willing to go with him, or simply had no choice. Trapped in the ironic dilemma, that their struggle for betterment led to not living. Perhaps because they forgot to take care of their Joy.

I get the point that was made but Slowik could've either retired or taken a hiatus from his career the moment he began to feel unsatisfied or unappreciated to reevaluate his life. Considering that Slowick is a world-renowned chef that most likely has a sizeable piggy bank, he could afford to step away from that environment. Slowik could've created a small restaurant that caters to the middle-class or whomever he felt would be more appreciative of his skill. The average person is unable to step away from their toxic work environment due to financial circumstances. Slowik's reason for not stepping away was his pride & ego, utterly ridiculous. Slowik clearly understands the power & influence he has over people. Meaning, he would've still been successful after a period of absence.

i loved this movie so much 😭 i saw it in cinemas twice because it was just so good and i wanted to see the reactions of people who hadn’t seen it lmao. i only went originally for anya taylor-joy, i definitely wasn’t expecting THIS, it’s insane and i love it. since seeing it, my friend and i will just randomly bring up “tyler’s bullshit” and lose our minds laughing because LMAO WHAT??? bro deserved to be roasted like that honestly.
Oysters and lemon mignonette - Common flavors put together that have to be broken down and deconstructed, foreshadowing what happens to the guests. This is meant to be taken as Chef throwing down the gauntlet. Amuse Bouche - More foreshadowing. Charred lace - crater. Milk snow - ash from the fire. Cucumber and melon - the guests. The Island - Scallop on a rock - Chef presenting himself to the guests. Plants - "in the weeds" Breadless bread plate - straight up snarking at picky customers. But you can also make a case for Lilian's plate having a broken emulsion on purpose as his way of saying SHE'S as useless as a broken emulsion. Memory - Self explanatory The Mess - Pressurized vegetables - literal pun. Bone marrow - blood. Beef jus - sweat. Potato confit - tears. As a whole, it's essentially a dead body with blood pouring out. It even has a hole for the bullet. Man's Folly - Plum vinegar exists because of Umeboshi, whey plays a vital part in making yogurt, sea kelp and lettuce are what keeps the oceans biome from wreaking havoc. But everyone either doesn't know that or forgets, because they don't taste good, aren't as attractive, or can be very difficult to work with in their natural form. It's the same with women, especially when they try to speak out against unfair treatment like what the chef describes. They get called things like "bottom feeders", like crabs. Final scene with Margot/Erin eating the cheeseburger - She didn't care about giving him peace of mind. She just wanted to survive. And Chef acknowledged that. Using his menu as a napkin - She never believed anything he said for one second. She is, in fact, a taker that knows her worth. And that's why she lived.

I only just watched this movie today and I rushed to see your reaction. It's one of the best, funniest, darkly humorous movies I've seen in a long time. And yes, Elsa is the star :D Now you REALLY need to watch The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover, starring Helen Mirren.
We never know what Chef says to Tyler, but we know that it was devasting enough to kill himself. And he truly deserved his fate. My theory is that he told Tyler that he wasn't worthy enough to share the fate of the others.

When I saw the poster, I thought it was a comedy drama film about a food critic and his girlfriend try to oust a world class Chef for being a fraud. Then I learned it's a dark comedy horror film. I was even surprised to learn it got snubbed at this year's Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, etc.
I know, right?! Not a single nomination in any category! You'd think it'd at least get nominated for Best Cinematography or Best Production Design for the food.
I mean, _Everything Everywhere All at Once_ is gonna win Best Picture for sure, but I still think _The Menu_ deserved a nod.
All that tells me is the people in control of nominations fits the description of the greedy takers who needed to be s'mored. Clearly, they were butt hurt about it.
I loved this so much I made my mom watch it with me the next day. Thank you for laughing, so many people don't get dark comedy. "It's a tortilla." I rewound that part like 5x bc I was laughing so hard! Elsa was my fave.

Yess as much as this movie is trying to comment on elitism and how everyone’s a critic nowadays, it’s also a movie that doesn’t take itself so seriously. Everyone in the movie is a caricature of real people except for Margot/Erin and it’s hilarious!

I enjoyed seeing how quickly Alanda picked up on the deathly cues coming for our diners, and then shifting to the driving plot question for the rest of the film: Can Margot somehow escape?
I couldn't help but notice another recent film swimming in the same waters with The Menu. "Knives Out: Glass Onion" shares many tenuous, but curious connections here.
Both films summon their participants together for uniquely personal reasons by a commandeering, murderous zealot with an inflated sense of purpose -- and most importantly, living one big lie at the plot's center. Also both protagonists are women who "shouldn't be there" and must solve their own murders(potential) before the megalomaniac completes his plan.
I really enjoyed how both of these films skirted the "wrong guy in the wrong place" trope and just allowed Margot (and Janelle Monae's Helen) to carefully reveal themselves so each could walk away with her integrity intact. The sets employed preposterous prop designs and on-the-nose theatrics to skewer attendees while dazzling our eyes and palette.
Now, I did use "tenuous" to describe the films' parallels, so obviously the stakes rise to gory, bloody levels in The Menu as it flirts with horror; nonetheless, a big fireball engulfs all the plot machinery, pomposity, pretension and deceit of both films -- leaving viewers with closeups of both leading ladies, embattled and tired but still managing a cryptic smile to end the movie.
Alanda's laughter is infectious. I love every second of it💕💕
Love this movie to death. I thought it was interesting that you concluded that that one couple’s daughter offed herself. I didn’t think that was the case but yeah that husband was a certified CREEP.
this movie was insane absolutely insane, i really enjoyed it though, few films have stressed me out this much in a while, mother! was one that stressed me past the edge, love that film but it’s FUCKED, the whole time i watched this, i was literally audibly yelling, and pissed off at the rich people at first then the whole chef thing, the amount of pretentious bullshit from their mouths, i wanted to scream, not sure if youll have the same reaction LMAO but god it was, infuriating, in a great way, made me feel like anyas character, trapped in insanity, 2022 has came through with some good horror films considering recent offerings from the genre, whether it be x, pearl, terrifier 2 (don’t watch is squimish people a warning), barbarian, sick, m3gan, bones and all, smile, nope, fresh and a few more, as a horror fan, i haven’t had this many horror films enjoyable in recent years for a while, LMAO sorry for long comment, i love your reactions, i always am waiting for them and find them so enjoyable and you’re so funny, and i love that you’ve gotten to enjoy this genre over time:)

This felt like how it would be to witness the dark decent of a once inspired artist. But not taken too seriously, like him having John Leguizamo die because he hated one of his movies he saw on a day off is a horrifically twisted level of petty.

You immediately picked up on what the movie creator wanted the audience to pick up on I think. I'm not sure if I have the story 100% right, but the film make Mr apparently had this experience where he dined in a situation similar to this one...I think he was ok off money wise but not ultra rich at the time...and he was watching the boat leave the island and he's like...'yeh these people are putting a lot of faith in this staff just to be fine with the boat leaving. Rich people are very confident in any situation.' I think that's how part of the story went.

I worked food service for 13 years. Trust me when i tell you, i understood this satire SO MUCH. i had actually just quit my job when i watched this, and IT ME HIT WHERE IT MEANT TO. Lol for real. 😂 especially the end. I was slowly losing my ability to give any effs about customers at all, and i slowly started to honestly hate cooking or making good meals at home.
I was slowly losing my sanity, too, and I'm so glad i got out. I have a new job now, and I'm no longer working with food. I can go back to appreciating it like i used to, in the very silly Art People way as these villains. 😂😂

In any skilled profession, or in any Walk of Life, if you are not careful, you will displace living for functionality.
It felt like a lot of them were willing to go with him, or simply had no choice. Trapped in the ironic dilemma, that their struggle for betterment led to not living. Perhaps because they forgot to take care of their Joy.

I get the point that was made but Slowik could've either retired or taken a hiatus from his career the moment he began to feel unsatisfied or unappreciated to reevaluate his life. Considering that Slowick is a world-renowned chef that most likely has a sizeable piggy bank, he could afford to step away from that environment. Slowik could've created a small restaurant that caters to the middle-class or whomever he felt would be more appreciative of his skill. The average person is unable to step away from their toxic work environment due to financial circumstances. Slowik's reason for not stepping away was his pride & ego, utterly ridiculous. Slowik clearly understands the power & influence he has over people. Meaning, he would've still been successful after a period of absence.

That would be his way of retiring from his career

Oysters and lemon mignonette - Common flavors put together that have to be broken down and deconstructed, foreshadowing what happens to the guests. This is meant to be taken as Chef throwing down the gauntlet.
Amuse Bouche - More foreshadowing. Charred lace - crater. Milk snow - ash from the fire. Cucumber and melon - the guests.
The Island - Scallop on a rock - Chef presenting himself to the guests. Plants - "in the weeds"
Breadless bread plate - straight up snarking at picky customers. But you can also make a case for Lilian's plate having a broken emulsion on purpose as his way of saying SHE'S as useless as a broken emulsion.
Memory - Self explanatory
The Mess - Pressurized vegetables - literal pun. Bone marrow - blood. Beef jus - sweat. Potato confit - tears. As a whole, it's essentially a dead body with blood pouring out. It even has a hole for the bullet.
Man's Folly - Plum vinegar exists because of Umeboshi, whey plays a vital part in making yogurt, sea kelp and lettuce are what keeps the oceans biome from wreaking havoc. But everyone either doesn't know that or forgets, because they don't taste good, aren't as attractive, or can be very difficult to work with in their natural form. It's the same with women, especially when they try to speak out against unfair treatment like what the chef describes. They get called things like "bottom feeders", like crabs.
Final scene with Margot/Erin eating the cheeseburger - She didn't care about giving him peace of mind. She just wanted to survive. And Chef acknowledged that.
Using his menu as a napkin - She never believed anything he said for one second. She is, in fact, a taker that knows her worth. And that's why she lived.

Erin/Margot using her skills as a sex worker to figure out what would make Chef enjoy himself one last time was absolutely the *chef's kiss* moment of the movie. That fucking CLAP, tho! Also, her having to kill Elsa was sad cuz Elsa was goddamn hilarious with her passive-aggressive ass. And the girl who went to Brown.. I wonder if she would have lived if she said "Financial Aid/Scholarships" 🤣🤣
