  • Right now, you can join my monthly singing program 30 Day SongMaster where we learn to sing 2 new songs each month: ramseyvoice.sa...
I love to say that for every voice teacher there is a different vocal technique.
That's because as voice teachers, we're always coming up with new innovative ways of approaching the voice.
But there are a few massively popular techniques that tend to produce results very quickly.
I wanted to take some time today to discuss one of the most popular vocal techniques out there: Speech Level Singing.
Today, I'll be working with singers LIVE to help them hit higher notes--the right way.
Anyone can get private instruction from me during the live call. As soon as I go "live", I will drop a link to access the waiting room through an app called "Streamyard" which will ask you to enable your camera and microphone.
For the best experience, please make sure that you have your camera on and a good internet connection. When I am finished working with another student, I will invite you to join the stream (if time permits).

Hey Ramsey, I just subbed to your channel. You're awesome bro, I use speech level, and have done so for 40 years, and still sing at almost 60 years old. Love and light from Paul in Bonnie Scotland.

Ah, just missed live. Interesting talk through, Matt. Didn't get any "Streamyard" takers then ? A pity since we didn't get examples of SLS in action, but I can't blame your viewers, it must take some nerve. I can't see me volunteering either. That talk about "fresh blood" at the IVA didn't sound very kind to the throat and may have put folk off 😉

I don’t think that was it. Just sometimes people want to volunteer, other times they want to ask questions in the chat.

Is there a schedule for when you might do this kind of video again? I'd have bitten, for some coaching on high notes. My voice pisses me off heaps in that I have a rather large range, but I'm 'extremely' loud and it feels like it must sound unpleasant/harsh when I do high notes and I don't ever really feel (or understand) any connection to my 'head voice' / 'falsetto'. When I try to sing airier and more intimate in softer passages I hate how I sound. When I try to sing quieter/aka speech level or a little louder, I feel like I'm squeezing/holding down the note super fiercely in order to 'sing quieter'.... So it feels like it takes more effort than just singing louder, and it doesn't exactly sound better either.
I like the result I get best when I put a rather large amount of volume/resonance in, but if this is all I do forever it sounds pretty 1 dimensional of course and it will never lead me to be able to sing softer passages in an intimate fashion, or to really understand the 'connection' between my chest/head voice. I understand that some of the notes I can hit makes it pretty clear I am NOT pulling my chest all the way up and in fact AM using my head voice in some way. It should be impossible to pull the chest up to where I am singing to my understanding - but perhaps I am wrong about that haha. So I must have some kind of connection between those registers, and I believe I can 'find' my mix easily enough but that shit's EVEN LOUDER haha and I don't like the tone so obviously I haven't found it 'for real' yet.
It always SOUNDS like there is just too much going on. Too much resonance. Too much harshness. Too much brattiness. Too much air. Too much compression. Too much power from below. Too much force (maybe? I think I actually am quite RELAXED in the throat and face muscles though, there is tension but it feels 'easy' and I sing for over an hour a day, every single day, without voice health issues).
In the sense that volume is my biggest enemy and I have a really hard time pulling back my volume when I need to and embracing the concepts required to take my voice even higher - I probably would be a perfect candidate for you to try speech level singing on.
