LoL. Today I brought my laundry upstairs in a big garbage bag. My daughter laid on it, and I said "when Corporal goes camping he fills his bags with leaves to make a comfy bed!" She loved that. We watch you every week. She's only 6, but we'll be practicing soon. ❤️👍
Right on! Modify, adapt, overcome. Wish I had a fraction of the hands on experience Cpl has that enables him to use junk that would likely kill most of us.
This is how I started camping, goodwill, free stuff on Craigslist, and stuff people threw out at the curb. Did what I had to in order to get into the woods for very little money. Love seeing how easy it is to find items that will work just fine for overnights in the woods without spending hundreds or thousands of dollars. Some people get caught up in the gear and forget why they even went out, to enjoy their time outside.
I had never seen a fire started with the small flashlight lense mirror before - a cool skill. Spark onto charred material another one I've never seen before. It's great to learn a new survival skill.
I couldn't agree more. I have seen people use parabolic mirrors in this way, but never in the field like this. What impressed me most is how fast corporal Kelly got an ember. For someone like me who has drilled through so many hearth boards with the bow drill and still not managed an ember, except perhaps once, this certainly looks like the way to go unless the sky is completely cloud covered. In truth the only friction method I have had much success with even in the garden has been the fire roll. I am very glad of BIC for razors as well as lighters.
Dude this vid is strait up as common man as it gets! The ability to just visualize the value in the basic items would be a challenge to a lot of people these days with how dependent on the latest and greatest technology society has become. The inspiration this video created was priceless! Especially for people who still have a spirit of independence and self sufficiency. Great stuff Corporal Kelly! Keep it up!

Parabolic lens, decomp wood, sanitizing or sterilization, learned a new fav knot, awesome!!! Love the improvement for leaf bed to hopefully get some sleep. Great video man. The temping of the wood great idea!!!
Cpl. Kelly, Another Outstanding Video and information AF, you don't need name brand stuff to go out and enjoy the outdoors. Great looking meal too, two of my favorite steak and bacon what more could you ask for. You Are The Master Woodsman and Bushcrafter thanks again for passing on the knowledge and craft. Tim L.
Using the flashlight reflector is a good method, not used much now. Back when I smoked, I lit my cigarette and then used it to light my fire. Lit a dead cattail for my fire the next day.
Great video! Videos like this and your last one that show what can be done with minimal gear are outstanding! Once again, the "K.I.S.S" principle saves the day. While I have a kit of favorite gear that I've assembled through the years that probably costs hundreds of dollars, I can also appreciate what can be done in a pinch with found items or in this case, thrift store items on the cheap. Cover, containers, candling, combustion, cutting instrument, and a means of staving off the effects of conduction were all easily achieved with $25 and most importantly knowledge, skills, and abilities sprinkled with some imagination. Well done!
I like this idea much better than the $250 Walmart haul. During that, when you were suggested gradually swapping out cheap equipment for better stuff, I thought why not get better stuff from the start by purchasing used? Poor people do not consider $250 “budget.” And poor people are better off learning that QUALITY LASTS. Anyway, these are all great fun and I love following along.
Im just starting out hiking/camping/backpacking. And i had the misconception you needed to buy at least purpose built, or name brand gear to have a decent time. Finding your videos has shown me otherwise. Awesome builds with re purposed items, while having a good time outside, I like it . Keep up the great work Cpl.
I enjoy perusing the thrift stores. You never know what you'll find. Great tip using the flashlight and if you have to wander around in the dark it is so much better than a burning stick.
It's not that I get bored watching your 30 minute videos, I have a 21 month old daughter that is constantly making me step away cause she is getting into things! And after she goes to sleep, I'm barely awake the next 30 mins to watch a video. I love the content you put out I just don't have 30 mins most of the time to actually pay good attention to the video. Love you Cpl Kelly!!
I love that you still do a detailed, simple instruction of your tarp Ridgeline every once in a while. I have 2 full Ridgelines set up in the garage because of your videos. One for me, one for my girls. Keep up the good work.
Very informative video, really appreciate the way you show the knotting processes you use. The alternative fire starters were helpful as well. I watched beginning to end.
i had always heard of starting a fire with the reflector from a flashlight, but had never seen it successfully done until now. mind blown... just one more reason i'm glad i found your channel. thanks for all the great content!
Loved the video. I tracked with you on everything until using the parabolic from the flashlight to create some char material. Would never have thought of that. Great idea, always a valuable takeaway from your videos. Keep'em coming!
That was crazy and amazing, I was expecting the lenses being used to create the ember not the parabolic with some punk wood; unbelievably resourceful/creative thinking. Definitely one for the toolbox!
Excellent Shawn! What I really like about these types of videos are: 1) It is a challenge to find what you need on a limited budget, and 2) Those who are new to this, and/or who can't afford to spend a lot... Can learn from these videos, but of course training is a big factor!
One word of caution about using used cook wear: Be sure to check for unusual residue on the inside. People use cook wear for heating things, which they were not intended for. I have seen people use old cook wear for melting lead wheel weights, for making fish weights. I don't know if that heavy metal residue would be removed by boiling. It is, admittedly, unlikely you will happen upon a cook pot with heavy metal residue, but still worth considering.
Not too far from the crap gear we used on trips when I was a kid. We spent all our money on boots, socks, down coat, and sleeping bag. I remember taking a small pot, utensils, and other stuff from my Mom's kitchen! I used an old, worn out before I got it Case knife for everything. Those were the days!
This is probably my favorite video of yours - simple, to the point, educational, with a focus on materials within practically anyone's reach. And I'm not sure if it was the angle or lighting, but the scenes of you tying the knots for the tarp line were also your best in terms of a how-to instructional - perfect. Making do with what you can easily get your hands on is what bushcraft is all about, and in this video you prove that even with meager means, some creativity, and some well-tuned skills, a person can thrive outdoors. Steak, a night in the forest, campfire, and coffee in the morning? Man that is L-I-V-I-N! And you showed us how to do with $25 worth of obtainium anyone could find in any town in the US. Seriously - way to go and thank you!
A good source of food to take along for camping or back packing is dried beans and a little pack of cured ham. Nutritious, satisfying and will normally last for a good while.
The Walmart and junkyard builds were great. Really loved this thrift store build though. Love where you are going with these videos. We watched the 30 minute vids and will watch the 20-ish minute vids too. Keep on keeping on. Thanks
From what I understand rayon is kinda a synthetic cotton fiber if that makes sense. Like cotton that was made instead of grown. I think it tends to be a little more dense. It can be found inside zippos. Great video idea, man. Genuinely inspirational IMO
I enjoyed in this video where you went back and explain the skills that you use such as using the parabolic lens, and then explained the char material that you had collected
Always appreciate that you actually take the time to show us how to tie the knots and demonstrate slowly enough that we can follow along - most every other outdoorsman or survivalist just says some riddle about rabbit holes and trees and it's over in like 3 seconds leaving you non the wiser 😅 cheers Corp for actually giving us a chance to learn something!
I'm about a week late posting this, been dealing with a cold, but I just wanted to say It was a pleasure meeting you and Dave Canterberry at SMKW in Pidgeon Forge . I'm always a little hesitant about meeting people that I follow on youtube because sometimes when you meet people in real life, they can be very rude and not at all what you thought and it ruins the experience and turns one away from following, but I just wanted to say Shawn and Dave were top notch, very down to earth guys and you could tell they had a true interest in talking to everyone there. Thanks guys
My wife and I watched the whole video and learn a few super cool things. A starting fire with flashlight and B then char technique. We were wondering about the fire starting technique with the duck tape you mentioned in the beginning of the video?

1) It is a challenge to find what you need on a limited budget, and
2) Those who are new to this, and/or who can't afford to spend a lot...
I think watching these videos of you temporarily escaping, truly help the rest of us when we can't 👏🤠
These products make you appreciate the real quality gear!
Really enjoying these budget overnighters. It’s amazing what you can do with so little!
Ooh Rah! Improvise, Adapt, Overcome! You have certainly lived it!💖
A good source of food to take along for camping or back packing is dried beans and a little pack of cured ham. Nutritious, satisfying and will normally last for a good while.
Damn Corporal! I am a 3rd generation eagle scout and I've never seen the flashlight Firestarter. Amazing AF! Glad I learned something. 💪
Yeah, if you upscale the parabolic mirror, you will have yourself a solar oven!
@@lorkainenkingg8497 yes, I've made those before. 👍
The Walmart and junkyard builds were great. Really loved this thrift store build though. Love where you are going with these videos. We watched the 30 minute vids and will watch the 20-ish minute vids too. Keep on keeping on. Thanks
Great idea 💡.....from riches to refuse to riches .....the Prepper cycle goes on !
Harbor Freight has a lot of cheap stuff to pack in for a kit .... tarps, a $12 hatchet, much more, even some flint-n-steel.
From what I understand rayon is kinda a synthetic cotton fiber if that makes sense. Like cotton that was made instead of grown. I think it tends to be a little more dense. It can be found inside zippos. Great video idea, man. Genuinely inspirational IMO
Love the price limit too
We're in that beautiful time of year for camping, love the fall crickets chirping each evening. Outstanding as always Corp!
Starting the fire with the flashlight reflector was awesome! Coolest bushcraft thing I've seen in a while. Outstanding!
I enjoyed in this video where you went back and explain the skills that you use such as using the parabolic lens, and then explained the char material that you had collected
Using that light bulb reflecter from that flashlight to start a fire was genius!AF😊
Agreed! badass!!! I always take a magnifying glass with me... The flashlight thing was a new one for me.
I “liked” and “Saved” just for the cord tying tips! Really enjoyed your adventure!
Making the char material was brilliant and showing other options for starting a fire in a pinch.
Can we take a moment to appreciate that this guy sets up camp from scratch in a single day AND captures it in video all at the same time??
I gotta learn those knots , wicked
Way to challenge yourself and keep the videos original. You have taught us alot!
