Hey everyone! So someone commented on my IG about calling myself a "minority" and describing it as "my whole life" and I just wanted to clarify since it was cut from the video. I lived abroad in Paraguay during my more formative years and was part of a "minority" group of foreigners since there weren't many foreigners in the country. I recognize my word choice could've been better (jet-lagged brain did me dirty) and also that I pretty much have privilege everywhere I go.

I wish that was the case, I'm from Germany as an exchange student and have friends who are also exchange students from SEA and the let me tell you, the "privilege" I get as a white person is not the same as my friends.

@@shark1140 That's understandable. Without delving too deeply into Geography, I was primarily referring to South, South East, and East Asia in particular, rather than Central Asia. I'm sure we can all agree that these three regions make up the vast majority, and they are the most frequently visited by foreigners in the west. I haven't done much research on the mentioned areas, so I'll take your word for it for the time being.

In my opinion some things that people think is racism is not really racism. When I was stationed in Japan I had some instances, but I never viewed it as racism and I still love Japan. If you try to view everything as being racist towards you and get jaded by it, you will miss out on a lot of opportunities. I am playing on visiting South Korea next year because I am interested in seeing Seoul and Jeju Island.

Interested thing about being half white and half Korean, most everyone thought I was 100% Korean and almost no one spoke to me in English;even after I said sorry my Korean is bad, I am American. Can you speak English? (Albeit I said it Korean) However, when my aunt (white) visited me over Lunar new year they would often speak English to her or if she said in English to them they would often just look at me and speak Korea.

They mentioned one of the bad things which was that the old generations tend to look or stare at them in the streets when passing by.
Don't know the intention but for them, it didn't feel pleasant.
Thanks to Jerry for having me on, to clarify a lot of what I am saying here is a generalisation and I have no doubt my opinions will change in future. Race is not something in your control so my advice for long-term stay foreigners of non Korean decent is to focus on spending time in the language, communication is your only tool against any discrimination. 90% of the so called 'foreigner problems' are just a language issue. Change yourself before trying to change the world. It can be done. Learn how to exchange ideas, enter the culture and live in KOREA! (using English all day is living in the west). - George

@Learn paint Paint I think you might have missed my point which is okay. If a foreigner goes to live in Korea surely they need to adapt and not expect everyone to speak the international language. Because Korea doesn't have to let foreigners in, we are actually privileged enough to be in 'their' country. So out of respect for the culture and in order to function in your chosen society (for long term stayers) learning the language is required. Transversely, if a Korean citizen does not plan on staying abroad long term or have a career where English is needed, despite the potential benefits, I think its their choice to learn the 'international language'. To conclude, communication solves foreigner issues. Going abroad expecting things to be 'international' is not realistic and is a popular false idea in the west.
@@Ginkorea i agree with you 100 percent . however, what i meant was about those who stay in a country for short term ,and since korea is trying hard to advertise itself on tourism market , i expect government to allocate more of budget to educate people in this way . because simply if i wanna just see a country for like a week i wouldn't try to learn it's language unless i'm interested or it has a benefit in my life and i would for sure get help from a guide , but even with a guide you may still need to talk to local people and it's rude if they act on a way like you're weird or something because you don't know the language . that's what is called hospitability . also knowing English as the second language is an index of literacy at least in my country

90% of the time being white is awesome.
My darker skinned foreigner friends have more difficulties.
The hardest part is being a magnet for weirdos. We are easy to spot and perceived as safe.....so if a strange person wants to be strange, then we get it.
Trust me when i say you are not special in korea just cause you have whiter skin, i was born and still live there, things has changed.

There's a saying in Korea that being white can erase all other flaws. I even had a conversation with a Korean guy who said that if a girl was not his type (overweight for example), he could like her for being blonde and white. I definitely didn't have bad experiences but I had mixed friends that did. Being pale and European is definitely an advantage in Korea. The next best thing is Latin or Arab/Turkish. It's a weird hierarchy
@Jenna L Yep, there are plenty of pale Koreans and skin bleaching is a big thing all around non-western countries, but that doesn't take away from the fact that we (I don't know if you're white) are treated better. Koreans will admit it themselves.

What the fuk are u talking about? majority of koreans are born with white/pale/light skin naturally but plenty of them easily get dark/tanned during summers because of tons of uv here in the summer. Remember the climate in winter of northern regions of south korea is extremely cold and lack of sun, so it's natural that even naturally tanned skinned koreans get lighter skins during winter time and there are lots of pale/white skinned koreans because they are not frequently/consistently exposed to the UV

White skin has traditionally been the standard of beauty in Korea. Because white skin used to mean a position where white skin didn't have to work outside, the preference for white skin hasn't changed much even now, but that doesn't mean white people can be rude and black people are discriminated against.
In Korea, it is called Samblack, Samhong, and Sambaek, and the standard of beauty is that hair, eyebrows, eyes are black, lips, cheeks, nails are red, and skin, hands, and teeth are white

Australia like really??? I live here in Australia and I’m half Filipino and also have Indian friends, Greek, Spanish, Italians and of course Australians I’ve know since primary school. I’m now 48 years old and have never experienced racism nor did any of my friends, Australia is a multicultural country and has learned to respect and coexist with other people from different backgrounds, this is also thought in school from a very young age, they even have harmony day at school one’s a year were students must wear orange shirt to celebrate multicultural day, do you even live in Australia?! Because the only thing Australian hate are people who disrespect our culture to fit into their beliefs and ideology. We don’t like it when they come here to Australia for a better life to get away from their country that oppressed them due to their culture and religious beliefs and lack of freedom they didn’t have back in their own country to only try and change our ways of life. An example is trying to stop Christmas celebrations at school because they don’t believe in it, well hello you choose to move and live in a Christian country where majority are Christians and this Australian find it offensive and extremely rude considering that we have allowed them to continue their cultural, traditions and even letting them build a Mosque. All Australian asked it that people should pay the same amount of respect and not push your ideology towards the non believers from a totally different faith and culture background.

I've watched alot more korean content since and I've noticed some trends. They're obsessed with 'America' much in the same way (I think) that Indians seem to be obsessed with all things London/UK. Most people seem to already recognise this.

They love Hawaii because it's beautiful and easily accessible. A lot of Koreans don't have many vacation days, so they want to be able to experience a western country not too far from them geographically. The plane ride will be quicker than any mainland western nation.

I love your videos! The questions you ask and the experience from your guests you bring on really capture the general picture of racism in Korea. I appreciate the extra focus you put on their personal stories. They provide valuable insight views about their society since my friend from Vietnam went through a similar experience in Korea. Once, her part-time boss told her she should be paid less because she's Southeast Asian and from a poorer country. It's disheartening, and I genuinely hope that no one else has to go through such situations.
Can you please make a video asking the Korean youngsters as well as the Korean middle aged people asking them what they think about the Korean beauty standard, and why people are so obsessed with white skin ,makeup, surgeries....Or whether they are discriminating people with other skin colors ....

What i wanna say is that Koreans don't care about western peole much. Western people think Caucasians have white skin but Many Koreans think they have red skin. So some Koreans call them 홍인 that means 'red people'.
I think skin color isn't too important if it looks healthy but unhealthy skin can be discriminated in Korea. Bright and clean skin seems rich. Because rich people dont work outside. So Koreans want it.

White people in general aren’t treated better than dark skin people. In the states, many white people experience racism in many liberal college campuses
People need to understand/realize that being white can be beneficial to a certain extent or degree (in other cultures). Yes there is often the perception that one may automatically be well off, because of media and what society pushes forth and some individuals still having a very colonized mind-set within the black and brown communities. But in all honesty, if you are over-weight or what not, a Korean’s treatment of one will not be the best since they value people being thin. So if you fall within the category of attractive on a world-wide scale because you are thin (or in shape), your features come together nicely, and etc. Despite your ethnic and racial background you will still be acknowledged and told you are attractive. Trust me (Latina, tan-dark skin chica), with friends in Korea that were black etc. You will have a good time, same applies for traveling in other countries. Looks are looks…

Am so thankful for traveling and having friends from different cultures, because if that wasn't the case. I WOULD THINK KOREA IS S PLACE OF INSANITY. and place stop using the phase Korean people or in Korea. Because I think deep down the majority or not racist ,their just Afraid to go against society's outlook.
What's the point of the question? The interviewees seem they have no clue if they've through those experiences because they're white or just foreigner or exotic-looking person.

동북아시아인이 거의 햇빛에 노출이 안된 하얀 피부를 좋아하는 경향이 있습니다

그렇나 남성의 기준에서는 피부보다 더 중요한게 인종에 상관없이 예쁘고 몸매가 좋으면 더 끌리는게 사실입니다.
이건 인종에 상관없이 남녀모두 공통된 인간의 본성이지요

Not trying to be racist but imagine an Asian looking down on a Spaniard or Italian with tan/brown skin 😂 Though honestly Asians and natives have it the hardest when it comes to racism.
