Let me guess, the car you just bought; was either black, white or grey, right? Well, guess what, even if you wanted a blue, yellow, or green car, you couldn't even get one. And that's because dealers and manufacturers don't want you to. America Got Scammed Into Buying Gray Cars and both new car sales and used car sales are skewed because of dealership and auto manufacturer BS.

    • @Simtatic
      @Simtatic 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +42

While its more common, the majority is still white/silver/gray/black. The color offerings by most manufacturers are usually 50 shades of gray with one dark blue and red. I gotta give props to Peugeot, they have some really interesting colors one some models. But their cars suck in other ways sadly...

I concur. Here in Poland since last few years cars are either company car or leased with full intent of swaping it for another. Speaking very broadly, white is considered "business" color and on car forums there are plenty of jokes about this. Grey and black would be considered "timeless" and in case of silver it has the benefit of hiding dirt and grime to some extent as road crap usually dries to grey'ish hue.

Covered this in one of my engineering classes almost 15 years ago (oh god, I'm getting old). Almost everyone has a color they would love to have on their car, and a LOT of colors they would HATE to have and will not buy that car. But almost everyone will accept a black, white or grey/silver car of the same make and model if their favorite color is not in stock. As a result, its safer to stock only black, white and grey/silver cars rather than risk colors that will not sell. Everyone tells themselves they will repaint it, see the price tag on that paint job, then decide that black, white or grey/silver is good enough.

You hit the nail on the head, it's the feedback loop of the manufacturers and dealerships. They think those are the best colors because they sell the best, then therfore only get those colors, which inevitably makes everyone only able to buy those colors, which then artificially proves their point of them being better sellers.
Take the ultra high end brands Bentley and Aston Martin. Their cars have over a hundred different beautiful colors to choose from (inside and out), and what are at all the dealerships? Black on black, white on black, and gray on black. Boring!

Hi mate, I live in Australia and it is much the same here. I bought a silver Lexus myself years ago and to be honest it almost always looks clean. I think that is why people go for those sorts of colors as they rarely look like they are in need of a wash. Also if you get a car with a red leather interior it looks awesome and matches the silver exterior so well anyway.
Lexus call the color of my car ‘Titanium’ but I think in the USA they call it ‘Sonic Silver’ but it is silver and can almost look slightly green under certain light.
Just my take on it but white is cheaper and was often sold as discounted fleet cars making them very popular . Black was difficult to keep clean and shiny Colors often faded in the got Aussie sun, especially red.
Plus if you speak to many panel beaters they will tell you that certain Colors are a pain the arse to match properly after a crash if they require a respray.
For the record metallic Blue and metallic red cars have started make a comeback over here though.
It could be different in the USA but that was the main driving factor here no pun intended.
As a side note we actually spell colour with a u I just left it as the American spelling for context.

Your comment about yellow, having the lowest depreciation doesn’t really mean much of anything if you stop and think about it. Just exactly what kind of cars come in yellow? It would be generally sports cars, and those tend to hold their value better. So this is how somebody can easily lie with statistics. It’s technically true that yellow cars hold their value better but if you buy a mainstream car in yellow, you will probably find out nobody wants it when you want to trade it in. I also don’t think the current color palette is really a plot for the car makers to save money. Have you been to a furniture store like Crate&Barrel lately. There’s no color in the store. Everything is monochromatic. It’s not to save money. It’s just what the current style is. Even the exterior colors on homes are grays and whites and blacks. Home Depot charges you the same price for any color of paint that you want, so it’s not because it’s cheaper . Eventually things will turn and color will make a comeback.

The simple reason is because black/white/gray is "good enough" for almost everyone who wants to drive something off the lot that day. Real colors each have people who love them but also have people who hate them. It's a no-brainer for dealerships to order everything in a shade that just about everyone will accept for their inventory. This also explains why high-end cars come in colors more often; they're far more likely to be custom ordered instead of being picked off the showroom floor

interesting. I feel like there's a strange lack of flexibility to 'vehicle ordering'; this should be split into two categories.
    1. Dealerships order what they feel sells well (models, trims, powertrains) in addition to basic stocking requirements from the manufacturer.
    2. Cutomers should be able to order whatever configuration their heart desires. Yes, any option, any available colour could be specc'ed and ordered in advance with no impact to the supply chain. Their VIN is hardwired into the manufacturing chain and assembly/paint becomes specific to that spec. It's already configured that way; what more effort would there be to configure a specification from the customer, even if it's for a Corolla?
anyway, I've always had colourful cars....well...except for my silver Mazda3 I'm currently driving. But I feel like green (like my NB2's Emerald Metallic Green) is an absolutely stunning colour and appropriate for nearly every car. It's weird that green isn't more popular since I find its appeal is pretty broad.

Oh and great video ofc 🏆💯 Here in Germany it's the same lack of colors (new cars built 2023 are 78% black/grey/white + 10% blue + 5% red) 😪 My used cars have always been silver too 😅

Not only that but they actually charge more money if you want colors others than gray.

My car's color is white silver so I couldn't pass the chance to get one. It is bluish gray at night, white and gray during the day. My dad who bought me the car and after seeing it for 4 years asked me "Did you paint the car?" thinking it was painted to a different color, it was overcast in the afternoon, it is that unique and really rare

I caught on to this scan back in 2016.

People saying that this isn’t the case in Europe are just lying straight through their teeth. I can’t speak for the whole continent, but I live in the UK and go to France and the Netherlands fairly often and I can safely say that their cars are just as gray and dull as in the US or anywhere else.

I work at a new car dealership and can confirm that out of 700 cars on the lot, less than 30 are real colors.

I drive a Lincoln limo with chrome and white walls. I think these crossovers, ev, blacked out rims Aerospace looking cars are nuts! You used to be able to order from a catalog colors, leather colors, wood trim or additional trim options. Coach lamps and white walls were optional and chrome rims were the rim of choice nobody had blackout rims in those days.

Here in southern Arizona there is a very good reason for a preference towards light colored vehicles, the Sonoran Desert can easily get to 115 F in the summer.

I love bright coloured cars but I’ve got to admit my golf has one of the best and unique white. It’s called white silver metallic and in the sun it’s this beautiful sparkling white but in the dark or a shadow it goes to this light silver colour that stands out so much. It was a expensive extra so not to many opted for it and has now become very rare so trying to find colour matched parts are difficult 😭😭

I have a 2012 sky blue Camry. I have auto body technicians who come up to my car and tell me that this color is the most beautiful that they have ever seen. I can easily find my car in a crowded parking lot. I do not ever want to get rid of my sky blue Camry!

So glad when I ordered my Tacoma in 2022 that I went with red. So many comments on the colour when it’s all shined up.

This is so true, the 10 mostly Japanese second hand cars I've owned sine 2004, 6 of them were silver and white, the 3 were light a green mazda from 86, a dark blue Mitsubishi from 99 and a bright blue Ford from 2015. Ive always wanted a yellow car, probably because our first family car was a yellow Datsun my dad bought brand new in 79. At least when looking for motorcycles they're usually brightly coloured.

I was told as a kid that colorful cars came with way more expensive insurance, it's just never felt financially practical to get one

Yeah we were all told that... any of these awesome colors are harder to match after an accident... but then again so is silver. Could be more expensive to fix, but then I would repaint the entire car or find same color panels from a car recycling place... the issue is the rear quarter panel... that I would just paint the entire car....

Just a myth! Insurance companies have much more detailed systems than color to calculate premiums.

When Checker Motors went out of business, they stopped producing taxis. Now they paint little four cylinder roller skates yellow and call them "taxis," but everybody knows what an actual taxi looks like. Who do they think they're fooling? My truck is insignia red. It's also 21 years old. I wouldn't want one of these new pieces of dung.

Thank you for answering my question on paints!
If possible, can you do one on car wrapping? I only know the basic about it but have questions like if you can just remove the wrap after a while and the original paint would still be good or not. 🙏

My little Fiat 500 electric is a bright sky blue, and as soon as I saw that color I knew that’s the one I wanted. It also came in orange, which I considered, but it didn’t hit me the same way. I bought it used, and when I went a lot, They have five in blue.
I couldn’t have been happier to be able to choose the one I wanted

As someone who works in the paint department of a mid level automotive parts maker, I can attest to the shades of gray. That said, we are seeing an increase of bright/funky colors, for one brand in particular. Also I have an 06 WRX in WR blue and a 14 F-150 in blue flame.

Other than a “white orchid pearl” civic my last few cats have been outstanding colors. Currently own a “Mischievous Purple” Mach 1. Also had a yellow Protege5, Competition Orange Mustang, Molten Orange Fiesta ST….. fun cars should be in fantastic colors. I’m still in love with Nitrous Blue Pearl on the Focus RS….
