Congratulations Poppy! I only drop in occasionally to watch your videos when something pops up in my feed, but you have always come across as a lovely person, so we are lucky to have you. I think 'feeling British' will take a little time to sink in as at the moment it probably just feels like it only exists on paper. At some point in the future you'll start to believe it yourself and you'll have a sense that you belong here. I think the majority of people will have no problem thinking of you as British and the idiots who don't aren't worth worrying about. Britain is a country which historically has been invaded by many countries and we ended up speaking a Germanic language which has a large proportion of French words! We are a very mixed bag to begin with! For me, being British is more about the culture and the sharing of certain values rather than where you were from. Personally, I am delighted that you have become a British citizen! 😁

Very glad to have you onboard! It must be a big step to become a citizen of somewhere you have moved to. Also a very big step to move in the first place. It takes a lot of initiative and a lot of courage to do both - so congratulations.
Btw - the 10 weeks is the 'worst case'. Everyone I have known who have done this have got it quicker than that but not sure you would want to risk it if you have something booked and paid for.
That's the thing I don't think I would want to risk it. At least I know I'll have it before end of 2023 whoop whoop!

Being British is great but being from another country with different culture and values and language is outstanding and that’s something the British cannot take away from me 😊

Turn it around and think how a British born would feel in another country when saying there from that country. It is just what it is. In time that will disappear from thought.

I am also in the process of applying for British citizenship under naturalisation (originally from Canada). I was under the impression that once you complete the ceremony you have to return to the UK with a UK passport and therefore cannot travel out of the country until you receive the passport. Can you comment on this - how was your travel back to the UK with a Thai passport? Thanks so much!
I think there maybe two points here.
1. So if you have UK passport, you must travel out of the UK with UK passport then in with UK passport. That's correct.
2. I haven't come across any source that says I can't go out of the country without applying for UK passport after being naturalised. Ignorance is a bliss ey?
So last week, I flew out of UK using Thai passport came back with Thai passport and showed my BRP card. Basically I was travelling to and from as if I didn't have British citizenship. The visa I needed was already in my Thai passport.
However saying that, at the border control, the officer had to make a call while checking my passport. He didn't explain to me why just said it all should be sorted now.
Reading your comment now makes me think it could be due to the fact that system shows I'm naturalised which caused confusion. But they let me in at the end so 🤷♀️
I don't know if this is advisable though so take it with a pinch of salt.
Do we have to apply for British passport with in 5 days after ceremony or it’s just for the biometric to return to the home office?
Help me Poppy, I live in a beautiful house in Thailand with my wife of 8 years. Next year we will be going to England for a wedding and said she would like to apply for British citizenship, but having watched your video about this, I was shocked to see it took over 5 years, were you allowed to leave the country for all this time, as I have no desire to live back in the cold for this length if time.
Yes ofcourse you can leave the country for holidays and stuff. In order to get a citizenship, you'll need to first be a resident (live) in the UK. They have a strict rule of how many days you can be outside of the UK without jeopardising the citizenship application.

Thai can have dual citizenship
Congratulations - you are a very impressive lady. Does Thailand allow dual citizenship? I am an Australian / UK dual. I have both passports but I can only re-enter Australia on my Australian passport. Can enter or re-enter UK on either though my Aussie one did get stamped "no work rights" at LHR once. Too complicated to say I was a dual. The UK one was far more useful when it was also European one pre Brexit - far easier entry to European countries sadly now all gone. Few advantages in Europe over an Australian one. Only keep it at as it cost 75 GBP while an Australian one is $AUD300. As I travel to UK regularly always break the journey in BKK or Singapore (any favourite airline?). In September got stuck in horrendous queues at Heathrow, Manchester and Amsterdam. Got a bit irritated with a couple of Brits who told me it was the same the world over when it took me 40 minutes to checkin and clear security at BKK and 25 mins at Singapore, compared to 7 hours at Ams! Reckon both Bangkok airports are better than the UK ones, especially Stansted . Good luck to you and your family.
Yep Thailand allows it but same scenario you're facing so I'll need to enter Thailand with Thai passport. I do think this rule applies for all countries/passports though. Re airport queues I never really noticed it until my recent trip to Thailand. It took me 3 hours and a bit to go through security at Heathrow, the queues were so long that they extended to outside the terminal! I'm aware that there are strikes going on so hopefully things get sorted out in due course.
@@PoppyDontree The other issue comparing Thailand to UK I meant to mention was that in Bangkok my wife and I did not see one person not wearing a mask on the MTR or Sktyrain even though there were regular announcements saying it was now optional. In UK hardly saw anyone wearing one even when it was mandated! As always Australia is about half way between these two positions.

My stepson became a naturalised citizen around 18 years ago and now he's a Royal Marine. 😁
My passport application didn't take very long to be processes. About three weeks as I remember. I did it at the Post Office using their digital check and send service.
I wouldn't worry about the people who say you're 'not really' British. I'll bet they couldn't pass the citizenship test.
The only thing I seem to moan about is the weather! Oh that's really quick, I'll have a rethink thank you!

For citizenship no it shouldn't matter but I'm not an immigration lawyer. I made a video out how much I paid back in August 2022.

Getting a citizenship does not make you suddenly from that country. I find so many British try to pretend that they would believe anybody with a passport is British. No, you just got citizenship. Over time you may get the humour, culture etc. for example, my mother is Spanish but has lived in England for so long, she likes it, she likes the people and humour but she’s definately not English, nor does she need to be. Be proud were you are from and enjoy what Britain gives you. That’s it! PS. I may well get Australian citizenship but will in no way be more Australian as I just don’t feel it. I’m a mix of where I grew up, which is England and the heritage of my parents. Which is fine normal.
I don't think anybody is truly British unless you have to Parents coming from Britian that's why its getting harder to get a British citizenship. I am British Born and Bread. Its like me going to Poland and getting a polish citizenship and saying i am Polish no i am British, you have the right to stay in Britian that does not make you British i say that with love.
There is a difference between citizenship and ethnicity. Being granted British citizenship does make her British, whether you like it or not, Callum. I also say this with love.
