Sonic the Hedgehog[a] is a Japanese video game series and media franchise created by Yuji Naka, Naoto Ohshima, and Hirokazu Yasuhara for Sega. The franchise follows Sonic, an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog who battles the evil Doctor Eggman, a mad scientist. The main Sonic the Hedgehog games are platformers mostly developed by Sonic Team; other games, developed by various studios, include spin-offs in the racing, fighting, party and sports genres. The franchise also incorporates printed media, animations, feature films, and merchandise.
Naka, Ohshima, and Yasuhara developed the first Sonic game, released in 1991 for the Sega Genesis, to provide Sega with a mascot to compete with Nintendo's Mario. Sega Technical Institute developed the next three Sonic games, plus the spin-off Sonic Spinball (1993). Later games added a large cast of characters; some, such as Miles "Tails" Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, and Shadow the Hedgehog, have starred in spin-offs. The franchise has crossed over with other video game franchises in games such as Mario & Sonic, Sega All-Stars, and Super Smash Bros.
Sonic the Hedgehog is Sega's flagship franchise and one of the bestselling video game franchises, selling over 140 million units by 2016 and grossing over $5 billion as of 2014. Series sales and free-to-play mobile game downloads totaled 1.5 billion as of 2022. The Genesis Sonic games have been described as representative of the culture of the 1990s and listed among the greatest of all time. Although later games, notably the 2006 series reboot, received poorer reviews, Sonic is influential in the video game industry and is frequently referenced in popular culture. The franchise is known for its fandom that produces unofficial media, such as fan art and fangames.
Absolutely amazing review. The fact that you covered the one thing I hate about Plus (that being scammed $15 since I'm a Digital Deluxe buyer) is already enough for me. Sonic Origins Plus in my opinion is disappointing content wise, but it gets the job done. Amy's a big highlight because she's very fun to play, and the Game Gear games are emulated pretty well for the most part.
Yeah, I got it for the 8 bit games, and while it does suck about us deluxe owners taken advantage of, and that the 8bit games are GG rather than SMS (or even better, remade in RE), I'm still happy enough to be able to play through them on a console that I didn't mind the extra payment that much.

I still haven’t gotten it because of this issue. I figured that I bought the most expensive version that granted me access to both PlayStation versions, I would have received it for free or at very least a discount. I feel awful that I lied about playing it on Sonic’s birthday when I was so fuming over this.

While I definitely agree that Origins has technical issues and bugs, as well as a pretty steep price point, I'm always a bit thrown off by people saying that the games should have had all these arbitrary extra features added "just because." No, they weren't obligated to add Mighty, Ray, and Metal Sonic. No, there's no reason to let you choose which Sonic sprite to use. No, they didn't need to redo entire soundtracks. These sort of hyper-specific customize options are things that are typically only possible in fan projects, where the teams involved have unlimited dev time, no budget restraints, and can do whatever they want without needing approval from Sega first.
I think nothing contributed to Origins' negative reception more than the fans' unrealistic expectations.
All I really wanted or expected from Origins was a re-release of the mobile ports, and that's what we got. And the presentation of the game's menu, at the very least, is a lot of fun. In terms of Sonic compilation releases, this is the most effort they've put in to one since Sonic Jam.

true, but simpler things like basic toggles like the lives system and the moveset would have been very great, also, im pretty sure the bug fixes arent fans high expectations, its essential when you launch a product lol
I'm sorry I respect your opinion but it sounds like you're enabling lazy development. There is no reason not the have the save options from the mobile ports, make Knuckles In CD a part of dlc, no master system gsmes, no Knuckles Chaotix, no Sega Sonic.
Sega should sell a better product than fan made content, if they're gonna sell it for $40 dollars and expecting people to have to buy it twice if they want to physical release. I bought it twice. I'm a shell, I'll probably buy it again on steam when I get PC. We should have higher standards

Mania is a full game and the Advance games are modern Sonic games.
I do think Knuckles Chaotix, Sega Sonic, 3d Blast, Master System games should be added. Maybe the neo geo game but it's kinda modern

Just pulled up the game on Steam. Sonic Origins Plus is $39.99 ($29.99 for the base game, $10 for the Plus DLC), so, the price has dropped there, too.

I know this isn't everyone's POV (certainly not SEGA's) but compilations like this should seek to preserve the originals, so future audiences can experience them as originally released and those who have played them before are getting the experience they expect. Sure, they should definitely add some extras (spin dash, drop dash, insta-shield etc. in any game, save system, restoring beta content...) but they should be optional, and not the main focus. I honestly couldn't care less about having e.g. Amy in the game, if the games aren't true to the originals, but "NOW WITH AMY" is a lot easier to sell to people than "ACCURATELY REFLECTS THE ORIGINAL GAMES".
As much as I love the Taxman and his engine, SEGA really would have to rewrite the games in C, in such a way that it compiles to the same code as the original, in order to ensure without a shadow of a doubt that they really do play identically; I highly doubt they're willing to pay for that amount of work sadly. That way, though, the code would be easier to read (than assembly) and therefore modify (for adding extras), and it would be easily portable to practically any system.

I don't have much problems with the new Carnival Night theme or every other new music(s) in Sonic 3 and I, for some reason, enjoy Sonic Origins a lot. Sure, it has some problems, I will agree, but whenever I play the Origins version of Sonic 3, I think of it this way: From what I understood, there's no other way playing the original Sonic 3 nowadays unless you buy the physical copy of the game be it the Sega Mega Drive version or the Sega Saturn version (which I have), so playing the Origins version of Sonic 3, in my opinion, would be better than nothing.
The other way to play is to emulate it. Perhaps even Sonic 3 A.I.R, which is really what Origins for S3&K should have been: the original, accurate, emulated game, but with optional extras that enhance the experience.
Once again, this Gabe Newell quote rings true:
"The easiest way to stop piracy is not by putting antipiracy technology to work. It's by giving those people a service that's better than what they're receiving from the pirates."
In this case, SEGA aren't providing a better service; they are providing no service at all. They took the original, individual, emulated versions off of Steam, thereby preventing people who would otherwise have bought them that way and want to play them that way, to essentially be forced to use emulation (and very likely pirate the rom). Someone who doesn't want to pay for or doesn't like the experience of Origins is now just going to pirate the original games rather than buying them individually on Steam, and that is SEGA's own fault.
Or, honestly, buy a PS2 and Sonic Mega Collection. I'd recommend that any day over Origins because, again, it's the original, emulated games. Doesn't have as many shiny cool awesome additions or extras, but that's what they are, *extras* and the important thing is having the original games playable as they were on release.

Only even considering it if I can get my £4 back. Fun fact, the Game Gear is really just a portable Master System with a slightly expanded colour palatte so there's no real way that they couldn't have j. Hell, the Mega Drive could play Master System games (you needed a converter to make it fit in the slot) as a result of Sega building the whole thing into it, with the Z80 serving as an audio controller. Gens GS Plus is a Mega Drive emulator, and it can also play both Master System and Game Gear games. If a community-made emulator originally deisgned for the bloody GameCube can run all three of those systems (as well as the Sega CD!), there's no reason why a big company couldn't have just comissioned a dual-purpose Game Gear and Master System emulator. I wouldn't be suprised to find out that the emulation isn't accurate either. Have people managed to inject ROMs yet?
I'm going to emulate the first two games in a cycle accurate emulator, use the decompilation releases of Sonic CD and play Sonic 3 & Knuckles using Sonic 3 AIR.
Honestly, I'm just glad the games are at least playable and that this collection didn't end up worse. But if we ever do get a new release of the Whitehead remakes, I hope they fix all the issues, add more playable characters like Mighty and Ray, and if they still can't get the ok to use the MJ tracks for Sonic 3, then at least get Tee Lopes in to Re-Remix these awful versions of the prototype tracks. I'm sure he'll do a much better job.

I agree about the digital deluxe BS but I do enjoy playing these games on the go and the finally made Sonic 3 and Knuckles way more playable over the vanilla version. The best way to play all of the classics is using the cheat codes. You can even play as Amy in classic mode with those and have lives. She has a really cute game over screen
I’m also gonna cut Sega some slack because these were built from the ground up unlike Mario 3D All stars that was only out temporarily and was $60
I think this collection is a must-buy on Switch. It’s the only ways to play CD and 3 & Knuckles, as well as the Game Gear games. The Plus expansion only sweetens the pot for me. I need to get it on PC though, and get that definitive 3&K OST mod. I miss Michael’s music :(
I mean if you’re gonna play Sonic 3 or any of the classic games on PC you’re better off playing the fan remasters Sonic 1 Forever, Sonic 2 Absolute, Sonic CD Restored, and Sonic 3 AIR
I want a Sonic Mania 2. Idk why Sonic Team won’t make another one. Didn’t Sonic Mania 1 do well in sales? They could easily remake 8 more old stages and make 4 new ones like they did with the first one but they won’t do it and it’s driving me crazy.
How many more times are they going to keep remastering these Sega Genesis Sonic games. There’s only soooo many times they can play the same game with a minor thing added. Sonic Mania (Plus) was fantastic and I wish they would make another one. 😖😫😭😭😭
Because that's all Sega is interested in doing year after year is to keep rehashing the same old thing over and over and totally ignore all their other games. Be nice if they released an Arcade collection of their classic Arcade games, some of them have never been re-released anywhere like ''Golden Axe-Revenge Of Death Adder'' but instead, ''let's bore the living day lights out of our fanbase by re-releasing the Mega Drive Sonic games again''. I guarentee they will continue this trend for many more years, next year we might get the same collection but with Mighty and Ray and Sega will call it a day for another season.

Hey don’t diss the modding community. Remember that they’re the reason we have Mania.
Granted they’ve since parted ways with Sega but my point still stands. We’ve also gotten some other great original games from Sonic fan games and hacks, like Freedom Planet, Spark the Electric Jester, and soon, Penny’s Big Breakaway by the Mania team.
@@ChannelPup How can we expect better Sonic games? when SEGA knows that some PC gamer is just going to make free DLC and fix all the bugs in the game, before the devs who worked on the game get to do it first. What takes the devs months to fix or add to the game, takes the modders less than a week to do. So how can we expect better things from SEGA, when the modders are doing all the work the devs should be doing, faster and giving it all away for free for PC community only. Why should the console owners have to pay more and get less for the same game? That ain't fair.

@@ChannelPup At the very least, the modding community should allow the company (Sega) to release their updates, patches, and DLC first, until Sega says they're done adding new content to the game. But releasing mods that fix most of the problems during the first week or month before the company does a thing about it, just gives Sega an excuse to say "Why should we bother to fix or make dlc? If the fans would rather do our work for free" which doesn't affect the PC community, but the console owners are the ones who get punished for it, cus we get stuck with an unfinished game, all thanks to the modding community for not allowing the company to make the game more enjoyable for everyone on all systems.

No way of knowing sonic origins a digital release would get an enhanced physical edition coming from the studio that gave you sonic mania a digital release that got an enhanced physical edition. really
If this package had included the remaining genesis titles plus knuckles Chaotix, 3D blast saturn version, sonic R and sonic the fighters this could have been the end all be all classic sonic collection.
Apart from the game selection I do think more additions, improvements, and fixes would make this a 10 out of 10 for all of us. More duo combinations should have been a thing, Christian Whitehead's retro sonic fan game from the late 2000's had duo combinations, and even mania's encore mode kind of did it too so what is origins plus' excuse? Tails can be more than a sidekick for the others. Like you said have tails lead the way with sonic, knuckles, or amy following him. Along with having sonic being followed by knuckles or amy, knuckles followed by sonic or amy, and amy being followed by sonic or knuckles. Audio for S3&K should have gotten some attention, more customization options would make things interesting. Hell 4 more playable characters would have worked well too. Metal Sonic, mighty, ray, and even nack the weasel would have been welcomed additions, especially after mania plus and triple trouble 16-bit respectively. To quote android 16 from DBZ abridged, sega needs to "stop holding back".
So a part of the DLC in the first version is included in Plus automatically. Yeesh it feels like Marvel’s Avengers making their costumes free when the game shut down all over again where I say talk about a slap to the face to the people who had already paid money on that
I feel like if I ever want to play the original games again, I'll just buy a Genesis and get the original experience. That's not to say that these games don't deserve to be on modern consoles, but with the lack of polish compared to prior ports and Amy being playable in Superstars, I personally don't feel like I'd get much out of this. Especially since these games have been ported so many times compared to the 3D entries, I don't feel as interested in going back to them as much as I do the other games in the series.

Honestly i just wanted the bare minimum. Classic Mode in widescreen, multiple save files, and a level select. Instead we get a nerfed Sonic and Gamegear roms… I’d still call Origins the definitive versions it just falls short in some places.
Amy isn’t really a nerfed Sonic considering her Insta Shield extends farther, lasts longer, can be used in Shields and when transformed, and unlike Sonic, she can use all her abilities in all four games. Also, just so you know, there’s a unified level select for all four games in My Data and Ranking
One problem I’ve noticed is that Australian/ European players for the game gear titles are the Japanese roms instead of the eu or us roms.

even tho i’m not a huge fan of the games, Spinball and 3D blast for the genesis should be in the pack, i just don’t see where, down the line they would fit in any other collection, here hoping for a Dreamcast/PS2 collection next year with Adventure 1&2 and Sonic Heroes

Sonic mania is perfect for me :) it’s only $20 physical, and it is fantastic mixing old and new. Totally recommend it over the Sonic origin plus.
I sooooo badly want them to make a Sonic Mania 2. Sonic Team knows people will jump up and down for joy over this but they keep announcing something else instead.

Honestly they didn't fix the audio issues throughout the games and not just that, but the terrible image filter that makes the games look blurry is still their so no, its not worth the money and you would think after an entire year sega would at least fix the biggest issues with the game. I shouldn't have to go and get a mod that fixes the image quality of the game, thats a problem on the devs part. People just need to stop buying games in general because its seems like a huge trend of companies releasing half ass done products but yet people still continue to give them money.

Hey man that’s you’re opinion. Origins is serviceable collection to me. It may be the best way to play the classics on consoles, but the overall *definitive* classic Sonic experience is still the fan remasters like Sonic 3 AIR and Team Forever Sonic Remasters
I hate how plus owners pay the same price as base version last year’s Sonic’s birthday. People who brought the game last year should be entitled to getting all the free content. How come frontiers gets free update to playable characters but cost money on a collection of old games?

I hope they fix the remaining bugs, and also give us the option to use the unused supersonic theme (which for some reason is in the game but they decided not to use it)
I guess it was a good thing I stuck with the base game and didn’t upgrade to the Digital Deluxe version when Origins first launched since that’s now included with the Origins Plus version. There should be an option for those who bought the digital deluxe versions to either get the Origins Plus expansion for free, or for at a $5 discount.
Regardless, I like Origins Plus for what it is. It’s nice to be able to play as any of the main cast in the 4 main games, and as someone who’s never played the GameGear Sonic titles before, they’re a nice addition to the game. While I understand all the problems Origins Plus has, and I’m not defending them, I still like the collection.

I'd listen to an entire hour of just ranting about early adopters of the digital deluxe edition getting scammed out of ten bucks. All I care about at this point is Amy. She's fun, but just feels like they added whipped cream and a cherry to a shit pie lmao.

Great review, but, may I suggest, if you're able to in the future, to record and upload at 60FPS? See, sprite-based games like Classic Sonic really suffer from 30FPS compression, as many visual effects such as shields and jump animations break when viewed at half of their intended framerate.

Thanks SuperSonic68. I can appreciate that a 60fps video will give a more accurate look at gameplay but given my workflow and turnaround time, I keep to to 24fps, particularly for longer-form videos. If I'm in the market for some more storage I may consider it, but it'll definitely be a bit longer of a wait between videos too.

I was looking forward to the release. Sega got my money- twice with PS5 and Switch. They got it again, twice with physical plus edition.
But I'm annoyed. The physical as you pointed out is just sonic origins with "plus" a digital download and even if you buy the digital upgrade as a deluxe owner your paying £10 for essentially Amy, Knuckles in CD and the game gear games.
Also, Amy is not even acknowledged as Super Amy in Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 with chaos emeralds even though she gets super powers.
Then when she gets super emeralds she is only called Super Amy despite having flying hamers and being able to breathe underwater. She doesn't have a after image though.
Have to say the physics are tweaked so won't jump to spikes in Metropolis and controls responds as they should in special stages (particularly sonic & knuckles).
I do wish as you said that sonic 1,2 and CD have a decent save system and can play like you do in Sonic 3&k.
I'm also frustrated knuckles cut scene in sonic 3 is still in mushroom hill yet starts at Angel Island. Why not move to Angel Island for cut scene and add it as part of story mode as an epilogue.
Also, the music for Sonic 3 still sounds muffled. Should have upgraded the music.
I accept the music for Csrnival Night, Ice Cap and Launch Base will be proto music. On the whole they are good, but need a proper remaster so sound good such as the proto music does.

Honestly I would have bought this game if Sega added more than classic Amy to the roster and Knuckles in CD they should have been there in the first place.
Yet even with those features added along side the game gear titles it still doesn't warrant the price tag when I already have mega collection plus & gems already yeah I'm missing the better CD port but I can live with that.

Origins Isn’t bad if you’re wanting to play the best versions if the classics on consoles, assuming you don’t have a PC to play the fan remasters like Sonic 3 AIR, or if you’re just getting into Sonic thanks to the movies.
But it definitely could’ve done way more to earn the title of “the definitive classic Sonic experience” which that honor still goes to the fan remasters on PC. Yes the Tyson Hesse cutscenes, mission mode and museum are nice inclusions, but it also could’ve had things like proper customization menus for all the games. In the end, this feels very much like a modern Mega Collection Plus than anything

like last year, they didn't do enough with this. Well, at least we have 3 A.I.R. and Triple Trouble 16 bit.
I always felt that they should have made an all new 16-bit game to throw into the collection, just as a spin-off and something that wasn't available on the Mega Drive or Genesis back in the day to help entice customers to show more of an interest in it and to help increase sales. Just throwing in Amy and adding all the Game Gear games aswell as not including all the ''Plus'' content on the disc itself is not good enough. When you buy a physical copy, you expect all the game data to be there on the disc. That code for the ''Plus'' extra content should ALREADY be on the disc.
Maybe Sega will have another crack in a year's time and make it better and call it ''Sonic Origins Ultimate''?

I got Origins Plus only recently, after skipping out the original release not because it was bad but because I had a hunch they would do the physical release thing like they did with Mania
As for the game itself, I agree it could've been so much better and is certainly is lacking in many areas, but for what we have, I still got some fun out of it. Wouldn't call it good by any means, but I thought it was an ok collection.
Tbh I don't really care for the game gear games and while its nice that Amy is finally playable and Knuckles playable in CD, I rather just pass on the plus addition and play the fan remasters.
Tails adventure is worth it tho. It’s a mini Metroidvania that actually is pretty good. Triple trouble is also good because unlike others games it’s design with game gear screen in mind. Sonic 1,2, and chaos were released in sega master system same day or slightly after game gear versions. Sonic blast had sega master version too but it’s Brazil exclusive

They lack widescreen, the audio quality of them are atrocious, their performance is abysmal at times and it's still the game gear versions which are the inferior versions. Sonic 2 on the game gear is unplayable for me.

@@dreamsdeep1076 still there's no excuse that they used to game gear versions instead of the master system versions. They were just lazy and used their shotty game gear emulator to port these games. This is supposed to be the definitive way to play these games according to Sega but it's far from that I'm just saying. The performance of these games were more acceptable on their original hardware but at this point, they should be running flawlessly on current and last gen hardware so of course it's unacceptable. This is why Sega thinks they can get away with releasing shotty products because people like you would defend this.

I'm so surprised they didn't replace Senoue's crappy renditions with the actual prototype music or fix the muffled sound effects for sonic 3. And they didn't make lives in anniversary mode an option. I know i could just buy the steam version and mod it. But I ain't giving sega money for this trash collection again, nothing new except for Amy and game gear titles i can play literally anywhere else? No thanks.

We need a Sonic Maker game with Genesis (Classic Sprites), Superstar (Classic Models), Advance (Modern Sprites), and Current (Modern Models) as the modes.
Ideally with extra characters coming as free DLC. Shadow and Blaze would naturally be the first update because Shadow as a character and Blaze as the originating of the modern boost would get a lot of attention.

Definitely agree that, in general, it's more difficult to make good 2D Sonic levels than good 2D Mario levels. You're essentially always having to make (at the very least) 2 levels in one, due to the way Sonic levels work, with the high path being the fast path that usually has the most power-ups, and the punishment for falling or not having enough momentum is having to take the lower route. Yes, I know Mario levels sometimes have e.g. a secret path of clouds in the sky with a 1-up at the end, but that's not really comparable. Intertwining routes that rely on either momentum or platforming to move between is integral to Sonic's levels, and is hard to do well; you always have to keep in mind how the route you're making interacts with the other (potential) paths.
