    The surface temperature difference is quite interesting. As you said, it could be due to the silicon lottery, which of course is exacerbated by the fact that the 10 core model is already chosen as inferior to the 12 core. My other thought, which could be completely wrong, is maybe the performance tasks being spread across eight performance cores in the 12 core, versus six performance cores in the 10 core, result in a lower requisite load and thus a lower temperature. Even if you aren't maxing the usage of the cores, the fact that you are getting closer to doing so on the 10 core variant might result in the higher surface temps. Anyway, just a thought :)

      Wrong! There are 8 performance cores in the 10-core variant and 8 performance cores in the 12-core variant. Two additional efficiency cores will probably not provide more temperature. That's not logical.

    Thanks Josh, great video as always. It's unfortunate that the 14 inch thermals aren't really suitable for the M2 Max, I love the idea of that form factor with so much power. I think for that reason the 16 inch is probably the way to go for me

    If someone only needs to do "light tasks office work, responding to emails and browsing the web", a macbook air 13 with m1 chip is enough for him. 10-core and 12-core are both for professionals, even in the base version. I make advanced video editing with 14" base macbook pro m2 (4k, 6k, raw video, 10 bit, 14 bit, neat video, filmconvert, motionvfx...) and it's super performing, responsive, without ever a hesitation (and faster in rendering than m1 pro). A truly beast.

    I have a 2019 macbook pro 16". Great laptop, and i recently looked into an upgrade. It's around 2.5 to 3.5k! I also didn't realize you can't upgrade the ssd or ram 😢
    My macbook pro was my first apple product. They are great laptops, but damn.. you have to be rich to get an upgrade, lol. Not to mention Apple care just in case the memory and / or ssd decides to die, lol. Might have to go back to Windows, unfortunately.

    Interesting considerations. However, I want to make some clarifications, useful for those who have to buy.
    I'm a professional video editor, with Final Cut Pro (mainly) and Da Vinci Resolve: RAW video, 4k, 6k, 10 bit, 14 bit video... It may be that Premiere (which you use) is not optimized for the new chip, but as for the other two software, I can guarantee that even with the BASE model (10-core, 512 GB SSD), you run smooth, fresh and very fast!
    I bought the base m2 pro model and tested it intensively for 2 weeks, then decided whether to keep it or return it. I had no reason to return it and spend more.

    When you say the 10 core version feels warmer to the touch, what exactly are the temperature readings, assuming you checked them using a third-party app? Just trying to see if it's comparable to the temps that I'm getting on my 10 core 14". Also, not that big of a deal but I'm a bit bummed now that I got the 10 core version based on your previous video lmao but honestly there's really not much to complain about, coming from an Intel i9 MBP.

    • @JustJoshTech
      @JustJoshTech  ปีที่แล้ว

      The temperature readings are similar, but what i'm saying is that the way i'm reading temperature is the max across the whole deck. That means certain spots where my hands mostly are, are warmer on the 10 core. Hope that is clear. As mentioned, the 10 core is fine and you should not feel bad about that in anyway!

      @@JustJoshTech Hi Josh, thanks for your reply. I finally decided to go with Lenovo Yoga 9i for the following reasons over MacBook Pro M1
      1. MacBook is great for programming since all the MacBooks were built on the Linux platform, but I realized that MacBook Pro's with M chips are not compatible for running Microsoft tools, especially the PowerBI tool, which is essential for me as a Data Engineer in my day to day use.
      2. This is a hardware issue which I experienced while I was typing, the Caps Lock was not responding properly, there is certainly a bit of lag when compared to other laptops, for typing specialists or programmers who uses the Caps Lock more, that might be a bit of an issue.
      3. System runs out of application memory (a common issue on MacBooks) which I never experienced on Windows laptops, while I am multi tasking.
      And the pros I like about MacBook is
      1. It's display, and it is out of this world. I can never experience such wonderful true to colors display on any windows laptop.
      2. Aside from the Caps Lock issue, I love the keyboard and it's key travel. It's one of the best keyboards on the market.

    Hey Josh, would you still recommend buying the M1 Pro? Looking forward to buy a laptop in September this year. Still unsure if I should buy a Mac since I've been using Windows for the past decade! I'm a computer science student and I think 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD is my preferred specs. I was also thinking about buying a Lenovo Yoga 7 I think but I'm not so sure about Lenovo because I've heard their laptops fail after 1-2 years (hinge or other part dies) and I'm looking forward to a device that lasts 5+ years.

      i bought the m1 pro last year the 16+512 variant only even i switched form a windows device. Even i am a conputer science student. My honest review is that these laptops are amazing and i have not faced many problems apart from learning a new os with a few quirks of its own. Only few apps dont work on the laptop other than that the everything is snappy and the device has an amazing battery life
      so i would say you can still go for m1 pro if you get a good deal as this will easily last you 5 + years Apple is unrivalled when it comes to build quality.
      If its not a significant difference in price i would recommend you to go with the m2 pro

      I would be cautious about moving over from Microsoft. Try before you buy.
      The general Apple logic is different and not standardised across the operating system. With MS, if it's done like this here, it's also done like that over in the other interface too. In Apple world, each user input seems to have its own special rule. Even down to the "close window/minimise" icons in the corner of the window... they're on the opposite side because why not.
      I learned to use a computer on a Mac, but then I switched to MS and everything seemed faaaar easier.

      As someone who's never used a Mac I love my M1 pro. It's the perfect balance between amazing performance and low power usage and great cooling. The M2 is just a normal progression of pushing hardware and hitting drawbacks as a result. Laptops should never be too hot or bottlenecked. Can't do better than an M1 in that respect

    Thanks for this amazing review! I am planning on buying the 14-inch M2 Pro, but right now I'm still questioning whether to get the 10-core or 12-core. I mainly work with graphic design software (Adobe, Affinity, Figma...) and occasionally some light gaming, although I plan to get into some light coding and 3D stuff. Do you think the 12-core version could be a good fit here?

    • @MonsieurGuy
      @MonsieurGuy ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Get the 12 core to future proof it (if you need to buy it NOW, if not the new m3 on 3nm will be crazier if you can wait) It should serve your needs for a long time, think about upgrading only if it breaks or someone else (your company) is paying for a new one. Should last you 5-7 years at least.

    I really do very little photo/video editing these days. I am looking at some really good deals on the refurbished M1 Pro models on Apples website right now. $1,689 for the 8-core/16gb/1tb model. That is $510 less than a similar spec'd new M2 Pro. This will be replacing my 2020 M1 13 inch MacBook Pro. What to choose?!?! haha

      The notch is there because Apple is using every bit of screen space. Dell decided years ago to put the camera near the hinge, which resulted in interesting "chin shots". Most people prefer to have the camera on top.
