I love how honestly Josh mentioned he found out he wasted 200 dollars, this level of realism is only possible when you spend your hard earned money. Not so likely to happen on a review unit. I also think maybe DaVinci or Final Cut could have used those extra cores better but it's not very practical to jump ship when you're invested in an ecosystem of software already just to get rid of buyer's remorse. Very good video altogether. :) I was waiting for it for a long time
This really, really helped me. Had a 14” M2 Max; it sounded even more ready to take off into space than the 2013 intel mac I was upgrading from. Because of you, saving a lot of money and switching to base model 14 with more storage.

Thanks so much for doing this, as it's super helpful. I've been trying to decide between M2 Pro variants in a 14". No other reviewers specifically mentioned the higher temp with more cores. That and the battery life, helped me decide to go for the base Pro.
I have been in need of a new laptop since about September - my old Dell has been consistently breaking down since then. It was during my painstaking process of trying to find the best buy for my use case as a student that I encountered your channel. I ultimately decided I wanted a Mac, but I had been waiting for this video to come out because of how much I have come to trust your judgment regarding what the best option for a use case similar to mine might be. I now feel confident in finally buying the 14" M2 Pro base model. Thank you, Josh, for your consistent trustworthiness and sage advice.
I think what I mostly got from other reviewers about the speaker quality difference this year is they're more balanced in terms of their EQ and quieter. To me that's better, not worse, but I'm also hoping the next design generation of the MBPs gain back their loudness without downgrading the sound quality.
@@JustJoshTech Interesting, I've seen both Alex from ShortCircuit and Max Tech describe this. The differences are either really subtle or unit-to-unit differences that may or may not have existed for the previous gen MBPs.
@@JustJoshTech Do you have a calibrated microphone? There are a couple of good ones for about $100, you could measure frequency response with Room EQ Wizard if you're familiar with it.
Speakers are quieter than the 2013, but much better, balanced, less tinny, nicer sound, not gonna use it as a boombox, but totally reasonable, volume levels for sitting at it
I watched this video, as you suggested it in your latest one. The 16" M1 MBP is just a beast! I knew I wasn't going to need to upgrade to the M2. Sure, some minor improvements, but nothing I would notice. The screen, speakers, and track pad are already best in class. Everything I do on it runs snappy and fast, compared to other machines (Win/PCs) I've owned. You may notice a slight (seconds) difference with them side-by-side, but you won't if just have the M1 MBP in front of you. It's just going to be super quick and rock-solid. Incredible battery life. If you have an M1 MBP, there's no need to upgrade - enjoy it for years folks! ....If you are upgrading from a Windows PC laptop, save $500 to $1000, and get an M1 MBP. There's some GREAT deals out there now.
Thanks for all your work. Validated I’m happy with M1 Pro 10core 16GB 1TB 14 inch and M1 Max 32GB 1TB 16 inch. One is perfect blend of power and portability and the other is my desktop replacement I mainly used docked. Grabbed both on decent sales last year too as in the uk m2 had big price increases due to dollar to pound. Glad I cancelled my full spec M1 Max 14 inch preorder as well due to all your testing and others than showed thermal throttling and bad battery life on that model.
Wow ! Now that's a clear and concise comparison . I am a hobbyist photographer who is just starting to experiment with Short Videos/Films . Thank you for taking the time to make and share this post . I have a much better idea on which one to order after this . I believe the base 14" or 16" model will be just fine in my case . I can always buy a 1TB external SSD . Thanks again Josh !
I am in search for a new mac because my 512GB 8GB Macbook Air m2 is so limited and this review is one of the best so far. It answered my questions on battery life and performance plus more. Good job, Josh.
THANK YOU so much for this video. I was torn between the 14inch upgraded 12 core and 16inch 12 core. Your findings with the upgraded CPU struggling in the smaller 14inch frame really helped in advising which computer to get!
Thanks for this very detailed review. Loved all those different tests you ran especially the ones for battery life, they surprised me alot! You are always my go to TH-camr when i want to get a new Laptop.
My late 2013 MBP with 8 GB RAM is still an excellent road warrior and runs Windows 10 fine in a VM. (Exporting video takes a little while, so make plans.) Great reviews.
I don't agree with your complaints on the 14 inch MacBook Pros. They're smaller, so of course they're going to run warmer and hotter. And as much as I hate to say it, is there a laptop that can come close to the M1/M2 Pro 14 inch MacBook Pros in that form factor? Apart from Asus with their upcoming ROG Zephyrus G14, I don't think so.
went from a 14" M1 16gb to a 16" M2 Max 32 gb, the difference amazes me, I love the screen and the performance, nice trade-in for the old one (1000 bucks)
Should have just bought the correct one in the first place with upgraded RAM, instead of wasting money “upgrading” within a year. Apple is preying off people like you.
@@NOT_A_TOP_FAN I agree. Apple gives $460 for a fully specked out 2019 i9 Macbook Pro. That to me is crazy. Probably what it cost to produce, but still...wow!

OMG ! That was the BEST review from all (hundreds) that I have been watching for the last 3 weeks. You just compared that I couldn't find anywhere else M2 14 10c vs 12c, and the results are indeed interesting. I wanted to go 14" 12c upgrade, but right now I am not so sure because of that heating issue and battery, its less efficient, and I do not even know if I would use that additional 2 core performance anyway. But I have a question anyway, is that make sense to upgrade base m2 14" to 1TB(to improve SWAP speed, and storage ofc) and 32GB RAM(sacrificing 12c/19c version), I will use it for programming, some virtualization maybe, a lot of chrome tabs, etc. I know macOs RAM management is probably better than windows but anyway I am not sure if 16GB RAM will be enough? I had MBP Pro 16 inch Intel 2019 one time, that was super loud, without useful ports etc ,and sold it just before M1 came in, I wasn't super happy with macOs, but wanted to try one again with an improved design in smaller chassis. Thanks, BEST review on YT.
Same here! I was thinking if it’s worth upgrading the SSD Storage to 1TB with the M2 pro MacBook Pro base model (16GB RAM - 10CPU - 16GPU) to improve “Swapping speeds”?
I contemplated between the 14- and the 16-inch models. I ended up getting the 14-inch M2 Pro, reluctantly, as I always thought bigger is better but I fell in love with the 14-inch Pro. Perfect size and portability.

It's interesting that you say that not more than 16GB of Ram is needed to run Premier Pro [I have the MBP M2 Max 16" 64GB Ram 1TB SSD] because I see my activity monitor as high as 40GB Ram (even up to 50GB) utilized; with a color grade, warp stabilizer, audio correction, ect [with a wedding ceremony, full speeches, toast, and a highlight film (on one timeline - basically close to 2hrs long) on my machine... Great! Thank you Josh for that video! I am considering getting rid of my problematic Asus G14 (especially since I barely use the RTX gpu) and finally switching to MacOS, especially with these ARM Macbooks. Your video is the greatest summary of what to get, since I am not following tech trends, like I used to. The M1, either with 14 or 16 inch screen, seem like the best way to go, at least depending on pricing... and that M2 seems more of an update, rather than generational jump here.
I have an Asus G14 from 2020 and I tried to sell it but without luck. Now I’m keeping it for casual gaming(perfect for the new Hogwarts legacy game) and I also bought a MacBook and I can tell you that the MacBook is just something else. You will not regret it.
It shouldn’t surprise anyone the M2 is simply a generational jump. The major display/chassis overhaul is done and dusted, it’s just going to be processor updates to keep it competitive. No different to older Intel Macs or Dell XPS devices that kept the same design from 2016-20 and only had spec bumps between then. If you skipped the M1 Pro and waited this long then this is the reward where you can pay the same amount and get a slightly faster device with slightly better battery.
We're in the same boat. I also have a 2021 g14 and realized that I barely used the dedicated GPU for any intensive app or program that's why I am trying to get rid of it before diving to the world of MacOS. Go for the refurb M1 14", I feel like that's the most bang for the buck variant available out there.
Hi Josh: I am planning to buy a new MacBook. Should I choose the MacBook Air M3 or MacBook Pro (M3 Pro or M3 Max). These are new models coming next: Rumors. Thank you.
Seems like with these laptops, where it's the M1 Pro or M2 Pro, the base model is the one to go for. Maybe an upgrade to 1TB for the SSD, with the double benefit of getting more space and more speed.
The 16'' battery life is incredible. As for the notch, I never had a problem with stuff hidden behind on my 13'' M2 Air, although I use the more space option to see more code on screen.
This is very helpful! If I need to do video production work, handling huge files, 8k files, design work including animation. My laptop is 8 years old so I do want to upgrade. Will a 14inch M2 pro enough? And which config? Thanks
Hello Hello Hello from Türkiye :) Thank you for the video. It really helped me to choose my next macbook pro m2 pro. But one question I do still have. Should I chose 16 gig or 32 gig of ram? I should consider that I will use this machine for 5-6 years. Also my daily routines like everyone do. Maybe in the future I will do some rendering. Not as a daily routine. Can you please help me to take a decision ?
You are forgetting one reason for buying the 14" M2 Max (besides needing the extra cores) - and that is using 3-4 external monitors (the M2 Pro only supports 2 external screens). I can see many buying it - not for the extra power, but for the amount of external display support.
For those buying base model with 512GB, I think there's a comment mentioning that the SSD performance is really low because it doesn't benefit from dual ssd that the 1TB version offers. Something to be aware of, since in this video the 2TB model was purchased and the 512GB was not tested.
Great review! As someone who stopped upgrading my iPhone after the 7 Plus, largely from boredom and because of the notch, I don't even notice the notch on my 16" M1 Pro. It's probably more noticeable on the 14"? In any case, as someone who has OCD about such things, I'm not in the least bit triggered. Too bad, though, that such individuals don't at least get Face ID. As for stuff getting lost behind the notch, one word: Bartender.
Josh, I'm looking to replace my 27" iMac 10 core i9 64GB 1TB Radeon Pro 5700XT workstation with the 14" M2 Max 38 GPU core model. I already know what you're going to say but I have been conversing with folks on Macrumors who own said model and it's fine. It will be used mostly plugged in and docked to a Studio Display anyway. But I don't want to go 16" because it's just not as portable for when I actually do use it unplugged. I DO have an M2 Air with 24GB RAM which I will keep as my everyday machine also. What do you think?
Thank you so much. I am currently looking at the new MacBook Pros and was debating if the 14 base model would be enough for me. You’ve saved me a lot of money.
Thanks for the detailed review. To talk about metrics that actually matter in everyday use, that I didn’t got enough of from other reviewer, and balanced recommendation. Thermal, noise, battery, experience and purchase decision comparison stand out compare to other reviewer.
Very good review, gave a real insight about something that I was always wondering about the extra cores being of real value for my use case (Lightroom and Photoshop), I am considering the M2 over the M1 (14") just for the fact that you demonstrated that M2 is a bit faster at starting apps , price differential is not that much
Josh, thx for the video. I know you are a developer, or at least you were. Can you include in future videos some comparison: open a big project with an IDE, compiling times, deploying times, etc ? ... Anyway, I went from a 16'' i9 to a 14'' M1 Pro and was night and day. Not gonna upgrade anytime soon.
I went for a discounted 16 inch M1 Pro in October for the exact reasons you mentioned as sound buying decisions in this Video. Yes I would have liked 32GB just to be on the safe side. But I would have had to buy a discounted Max model instead as the I would have had to pay retail price + the upgrade fee had I added another 16GB to the M1 Pro thus bringing it in line with the price of a discounted M1 Max model. Knowing full well that my m1 Air was fast enough for the video editing I am doing. I only went for the 16 inch due to the screen quality and the screensize with the extended battery life compared to the max model as an added bonus. As I am using my M1 Air while traveling and my M1 Pro at home I am really happy with my buying decision and are not planing on upgrading my computer hardware for a foreseeable future. My phone however might be upgraded after the release of the next iPhone.
Im planning to use a vm (parallels) on my 14" macbook pro (im getting the base cpu, 32gb and 1tb spec) how much will my battery life suffer for intensive and casual softwares on the windows os ran on the macbook. and thank god i was finally able to find someone on yt with the 32gb versions with the m2pro. Great review!!
Thanks for the comparisons. They remind me of the debate between the M1 and the M2 MacBook Air laptops since the older models, especially the M1 MBP 14, still offer so much for the money.
Note that you can connect to most high refresh screens using the USB/Thunderbolt ports on the previous gen. I'm currently rocking a 144hz 34' 3440x1440 pixels screen with a USB C cable.
Really appreciate your in depth analysis and honest real world insight. Thank you... Curious regarding your thoughts on Unified Memory 16 vs 32. Thanks!
Thanks for the nice words. I have struggled to exceed more than 16. But it really depends on your use case. All our working Mac laptops used to make these videos are 32. That is more of a just in case though rather than a need. We can operate with 16.
I mean...we're not talking about smartphones...once you created a monster macbook the year before, you can't expect a mac that's as fast as speed of light, we'll never reach that speed. It's just a new model (which I bought coming from a 2016 macbook pro) that's a monster in speed like the m1 pro. Apple already made a revolution with the m1 pro, you can't expect revolutions every single year now
I am saying, I would absolutely not upgrade unless you can prove you need the extra RAM. In my use case, my assumption was wrong. I didn't need it and wasted alot of money. ALOT
Hi Josh, that was an interesting review. Can I ask for some advice? As a photographer I 99% of my time work in Lightroom. Currently using a Macbook Pro late 2013...which is getting slow with the new Adobe AI upgrades. Considering to buy the 16 inch M2. With 12/30/16 Core, 64GB memory, 2TB SSD. I plan to work on this laptop for the next 8 to 10 years, that's why I choose a stronger memory and core. Does my thinking make sense?
In my opinion, you don't need to spend that kind of money on the 30 core GPU. Since you're a photographer, not a videographer, it might be overkill. The 2TB SSD is overkill for photos too (get a large external HHD for storing the photos you're not working on... much, much cheaper than SSD and fine for storage, so you could afford a massive HHD for the same cost as a much smaller internal SSD.) Unless you are swimming in money and really don't care about the cost, that is. Being a media person as well, I used to think like you and get all the upgrades, then because I'd spent so much, felt like I had to hold on to the computer for a decade. The downside is, then something like a revolutionary new chip comes along and you feel like you have to wait. Getting something a little more basic (which isn't that basic nowadays!) and upgrading more frequently would have been a better strategy in terms of value, and I could have had a much better computer sooner. Apple's upgrade protocol makes that super easy and efficient too, where you trade in your old computer for a newer one and just pay the difference. Mac's hold onto their value quite well, much longer than other PC's, and the more recent the computer, the higher the value comparatively, especially in the first few years, but after that it tends to lose value more quickly.
I love that this guy talks about warm to the touch. Nothing is more annoying than a really hot computer making your hands sweat. I'll take slightly less power for quiet and cool computing.
Hi Josh, I always believe you deliver the most genuine and detailed review, I’m having an eye on the Dell Precision 5470, can you please take a look at it?
I have a 5 year old HP Envy and for what I do still performs okay but the 13 inch screen is what I dislike the most. I wish Apple made a 16 inch laptop that didnt start at over $2000. I want a Mac this time just to better mesh with my iPhone.
I liked your practical review. However, as someone that uses both Windows and Mac laptops how much useful is the touchscreen to you. This is a personal use question. I'm curious because of rumors that Apple may adopt touchscreens on its 2025 laptops because of the integration wanted with iOS. For example, having a car without a fully functional touchscreen is annoying when trying to utilize an app that is optimized for a touchscreen environment.
Coming from windows ecosystem this Apple ecosystem is confusing. Lots of options that don't make any sense. Should I buy m1 max instead of m2 pro bc it's much cheaper?
Here’s an advice for everyone. If you really want to upgrade, upgrade after 2-3 models from uour old one. Dont upgrade when the next model comes out, there’s always not much difference.
Apple has too many cpu/gpu upgrade options on their 14 & 16 inch macbook pros. Thank you for taking the time to provide your concise recommendations. I would love to see a comparison of the M1/M2/M2Pro mac minis. Thank you!
I don't know what he is talking about. My M2 Max 16"MacBook Pro is screaming fast. I don't know if he is using the M2 Max with the 38 core GPU, but it makes the best PC benchmarks look sad for games that are compiled for Apple Silicon.
It’s no different to any other laptop - is getting a new laptop worth it because it’s gone from Intel 12th gen to 13th gen - obviously not! Yes the performance upgrades are definitely important year on year to keep the value proposition from slipping and to keep up with competing devices but I think it’s obvious at this point that the target audience for this isn’t existing M1 Pro/Max devices but for anyone who held out when those devices came out and are only upgrading now from a older Intel Mac/Windows device.
The problem is by the time you upgrade the storage to 512 GB and the RAM to 16 GB, you are so close to the M1 Pro MacBook Pros and even the M2 Pro MacBook Pros, that you might as well go for them.
Best time ever to buy the M1 Pro machines. Just bought a NEW 16 inch base model M1 Pro for 1797€. Here in Europe the base model 16 inch m2 pro is 3099€. Thats a 1300€ difference.
My 2020 M1 Pro 13 aND 2021 m1 Air are still killing it...Im staying put until one of them conks out...then I'll upgrade. But the M1 chip changed everything best computer experience I've ever had. No comparison. M2 seems like a marketing ploy to get more money.
The review was so helpful, thank you!! There is only one thing I'm not clear on, could someone please help me? I'm gonna make the jump from a 2017 macbook air (has no storage, is slow, battery is almost dead) to the 14" M2 MacBook Pro. What I plan on doing on it is mostly 1080p video editing (sometimes 4k), while having a ton of chrome tabs open. Should I get 16GB of unified memory, or pay for the $400 upgrade to 32GB? Let me know, and thank you in advanced!
I have a macbook air m1 base spec and i use it mainly for final cut pro editing you tube videos, is it worth getting base model macbook pro 14" m2 pro ? i only have 8gb ram in mine and 256gb fills it quick with 4k footage ?
Awesome comparison! How bad is the M1 Max 24 core 14 inch? I want the form factor but also need the dual encoder/decoders for video editing! I would rather get the 16 inch if the 14 is an absolute dumpster fire but again, 14 inch is ideal for travel. Plus I think the 24 core in the M1 Max is going to run cooler than the 30 core in the binned m2 max. Thanks!
Hi Josh. For this video. Would you recommend the 10 core 14 inch MacBook Pro, with 32 gig, 1 TB SSD. I was going to go the the step up from the 10 core. But the added heat. And marginal performance. I don’t think it would be a good idea. Your answer would be appreciated. Thanks.
Really appreciated such deep review and quite helpful for my search but as I want the laptop to be used in software development as well, I would love to see also how they perform when it comes to compile/run some code in different languages like Javascript (React mainly) 😁
There is a large difference between The M2 Pro and M2 Max chips as far as how many external monitors are supported. Seems to be a big thing to completely skip over.

Glad I could help!
I think what I mostly got from other reviewers about the speaker quality difference this year is they're more balanced in terms of their EQ and quieter. To me that's better, not worse, but I'm also hoping the next design generation of the MBPs gain back their loudness without downgrading the sound quality.
I noticed zero difference in EQ or volume btw on my units
Is your computer a Macbook Pro with m1 or m1 pro processor?

I’m in the class as you. Using the 13 inch mbp love it but I need more screen space. Just ordered the 16 inch
Got a 14” 38-core hot mess 😂. Exchanged for 16” they shouldn’t even offer the max in the 14”
Agreed

It's such a lot of research to figure out which one to buy. Your videos have helped tremendously! Thank you.

I'm thinking on getting one with long term use as my number one priority and a good battery as my second. I like the m1 14 more but i guess being it a 2021 model i don't how how many years of support can i get from Apple. Should i get the m2 base model? i'll be using it for coding and study.

I was considering getting the exact same MBP with these configurations. Are you satisfied with it?
That's funny, I have the G15 and I use it primarily for gaming, but for any "serious" work I always reach for my MacBook or my iPad.
@@OurFantasyLife which iPad do you suggest ?
We're in the same boat. I also have a 2021 g14 and realized that I barely used the dedicated GPU for any intensive app or program that's why I am trying to get rid of it before diving to the world of MacOS. Go for the refurb M1 14", I feel like that's the most bang for the buck variant available out there.

I should consider that I will use this machine for 5-6 years. Also my daily routines like everyone do. Maybe in the future I will do some rendering. Not as a daily routine. Can you please help me to take a decision ?
As mentioned the 14" M1 is on sale and around $700.00 cheaper than the M2 here in Australia. A great deal for anybody.
Just for saying that this makes your mother proud, I’m subscribing.😊
I will let her know!
Hey Josh thank you for the great video. Do you recommend upgrading the Ram to 32 Gb on the basic M2 pro chip for the 14"?
Thank you so much! You saved people lots of money

Thanks mate. I try to make it as useful as possible
I used to do this, but my projects all opened within a second or two of each other. It was immaterial tbh
What about a thermal issues in your case with 14" M1 Pro?
Thank you Josh, your reviews are always so clear and informative. I am leaning towards getting the 14 M2 Pro Base model.
That's the one to get. With zero upgrades other than maybe storage

An average person is perfectly fine with the MBA, these upgrades are completely unnecessary, and don't play games on the macbook, it's that simple.
@@User-cb4jm Yeah, from intel to apple silicon is definitely a worthy upgrade.

I have a macbook air m1 base spec and i use it mainly for final cut pro editing you tube videos, is it worth getting base model macbook pro 14" m2 pro ? i only have 8gb ram in mine and 256gb fills it quick with 4k footage ?
The 14inch m2 pro is a sizeable step up. I would do it
@@JustJoshTech thank you, just pulled the trigger, get it tomorrow 👍🏼
Awesome comparison! How bad is the M1 Max 24 core 14 inch? I want the form factor but also need the dual encoder/decoders for video editing! I would rather get the 16 inch if the 14 is an absolute dumpster fire but again, 14 inch is ideal for travel. Plus I think the 24 core in the M1 Max is going to run cooler than the 30 core in the binned m2 max. Thanks!
I'm going to answer this in a TH-cam short for you
@@JustJoshTech thanks!
@@JustJoshTech I would also like to know... where do I find that answer video?
Hi Josh. For this video. Would you recommend the 10 core 14 inch MacBook Pro, with 32 gig, 1 TB SSD. I was going to go the the step up from the 10 core. But the added heat. And marginal performance. I don’t think it would be a good idea. Your answer would be appreciated. Thanks.
which one you bought?? thoughts?
Really appreciated such deep review and quite helpful for my search but as I want the laptop to be used in software development as well, I would love to see also how they perform when it comes to compile/run some code in different languages like Javascript (React mainly) 😁
There is a large difference between The M2 Pro and M2 Max chips as far as how many external monitors are supported. Seems to be a big thing to completely skip over.
