  • Discover how to improve your watercolor paintings with value studies. Monochromatic watercolor paintings help you focus on value and contrast. I’ll show you how to paint two value studies step-by-step.
You only need one paint color. I recommend Indigo or Neutral Tint (linked below).

Art instructors always say values are king. “Get this right and you’ll succeed”, they say. My response: yeah, blah blah blah boring I don’t need that. That little round window’s values shocked me. And that finally makes me believe how important those “boring” value studies are. Thank you again!

Thank you for sharing this. This is incredibly helpful and exactly what I’m looking for. I think where other artist focus on painting the final result in their tutorials and all of this prep is missed.

I struggled with the exact same thing. I couldn’t find enough information about doing value studies or planning watercolor paintings. So I wanted to share how I do it in hopes it helps others. I’m glad you found it useful.

It would’ve been extremely helpful to have the reference photo up while you were filling in the different values so I can understand why you were doing what you were doing

I’ll keep that in mind the next time I film a tutorial like this.
