Yeah the lore is that for sure, but I dont find the thorn interesting as a weapon and the sound and effects seem lackluster althou thats a issue that is intrinsic with destiny

A leak of the Old Chicago map, the idea of a poison-themed subclass coming in Witch Queen, and a refresher on the Thorn-Last Word story. Wonder of Shin Malphur could be the next DLC's destination vendor, and maybe even a new member of Elsie's "dark vanguard."
That would be very nice. Especially since Shin is SO important in the lore, yet we didnt see him in-game at all.
I'm not so sure that will happen as the lore cards you get while forging lumina, made me feel he was pretty much going into retirement and passing on the torch to you.

Judging by the “Recovered after evacuation” epitaph, this is probably sometime before the Red War forced us out of the city, meaning Shin Malphur could have recovered the original thorn afterwards and put it in our path.
I love how during this entire thing... we didn't get insight into Shins mindset on these experiments. If he found out about Necrotic Grips he'd go mad.

I think it is very likely that Jana had the original thorn. She mentions that "fanatics can create knockoffs" kind of making it seem like she has the actual one

@@justarandomaccount7011 we do not know when this piece of lore took place, could have been before we turned it into Lumina. The fact that the lore ends with "datalogs saved before evacuation" is likely telling that.

And another thing, I think it might quite possibly be some of the last we hear from Jana. While this is all speculation and I don't have any evidence (except the evacuation part) I think it quite likely that Shin was the reason they tried to evacuate. And this may then lead to us being able to place this lore right before Shin has given us the original Thorn
for real though, if you wield this combo with devour through most activities, you're basically unstoppable. It's like wielding a different darkness subclass, or at least abilities, that nobody else can. it's such a unique combo, and a VERY capable one at that

I love that you go “hi! Welcome to Destiny” after introducing Thorn. I’ll never forget staring at the poster that came with limited edition D1. Thorn was on it and I was mesmerized as a kid
I will listen to you tell the story of the dredgens and shin as many times as you tell it. It is truly one of the most amazing stories in destiny.

in fact, the original rose is supposed to look like thorn, with a white and golden colour pallet and with a rose embossing on it. same with his armour
I'll be honest, if Bungie made an ornament for either Thorn or Lumina that looks like a cleaned up Rose (the purple 150 hc) I'd never main any other exotic.
Taeko-3 was that the guardian we were trying to save (or were they trying to save us) in Savarhun's song strike

I noticed that on my own and couldn’t stop talking about it to my clanmates for days. Apparently, they like hearing lore better from Byf instead of a hyperactive hunter whose voice sounds like rubbing two pieces of styrofoam together.

Sometimes I wonder if Perhaps the same Curse that afflicted Yor was really the effect of Thorn itself and what if Dredgen Yor himself is far more tied to Thorn than what we realize.
Hello. This is for my fellow healers in Destiny 2 who use the Grace tree for Warlocks. Lumina is strong and doubles as extra heals and cooldown triggers for your other powers. Love using it most of the time plus the starfire protocol that gives boosts overall from a extra grenade for a kill or heal plus when getting a kill charges your rift to full. I let you find the hidden powers for yourself.

Given the mention of an "evacuation," I can only hazard a guess that the events mentioned in the lore happened prior to the Red War. While it is unknown if Artifact H-349 is indeed the real Thorn or not, the possibility that Shin probably had to wrench it from Jana-14's cold, dead hands (pun unintended) is not an unlikely one. -It could also be that the reason the original Thorn was in such dire shape when we found was not because it had been deprived of sustenance, but because it was ripped apart in order to create the Exotic grips we now wield against the Darkness.-

My theory on chronology is that Shin let the vanguard experiment on Thorn, and then eventually did a "judge jury executioner" on Jana-14.
Afterwards, Shin took the now broken OG Thorn and decided to be selective about who got to have OG Thorn

From what I understand, even from accounts of Shin’s own telling and memory, he said that they do not always sync up with reality in the Last Word Grimoire, so there was technically room for clarification overtime, even Thorn’s Grimoire stated that it was believed to have been destroyed, so it was likely that Shin did not think it to be a threat until he saw the Shadows of Yor with Thorn Replicas and would come across the original thorn when it was experimented on so he would seal it. And from the ending of the the lore entry for eh NG, there seems to be some incident that happened that caused an evacuation, so there is more to it, even Taeko was involved too.
almost 7 years now and we still getting lore on thorn, the story alone will keep me coming back always.
Did Shin participated in the Battle of Twilight Gap or the Red War? Where was Shin when the Last City needed him the most?
OG Thorn we were given wasn't broken, our guardian refused to use it. Only touching Thorn reminded us of the loss of light from ghauls attack
Dredgen Yor’s research is what will lead to the thorn subclass. It is my opinion that, like Nokris, Dredgen Yor cared little for hive heresy. He found a way to wield a dark power or produce a resurrection ritual. When he was killed by the golden gun, he was reborn elsewhere.

Thank you byf, you read my mind! I was literally playing gambit earlier thinking about how we have become darkness embracing guardians, and I wondered about the lore between thorn and necrotic grip

Poison was theorized to be the next darkness-based subclass, so imagine that it would be Shin Malphur teaching us and leading the story of that DLC like the Exo Stranger for Stasis and Beyond Light!
I'm expecting something similar like this in Witch Queen next year

Exactly!!! what I was thinking!, your not alone, even back in the season of the hunt, Fallen with hive corrupted power! like thorn and Necrotic Grip, I also believe we will get this power as a new dark subclass, with Thorn being the original, and coming across Shin after the Drifter with the Shadows of Yor, maybe the return of the Dreadnought, it's all speculation of course, I had a lot of this on my mind every since beyond light released date 😂

Two teaming it makes it more powerful also it has the best range stability and fire rate of all the hand cannons also it works with wither hoard. If someone is affected by witherhoard they become an instant oje shot since wither counts as a malfesance shot

it would be cool if they expanded on the "accidental discharge" idea and made exotics for the other classes based around that. Maybe like an exotic legs that changes a titan punch to almost a finisher kick that leaves the targets in an area corrupt for a period of time (like a reverse missile titan melee), or a hunter helmet that causes confusion and reverse controls when paired with another slower weapon similar to thorn or something

It appears the first “accidental” discharge is truly accidental. She seems horrified by the test on cattle and initially remorseful about Carro, and it suggests she hasn’t been corrupted by Thorn yet; I think perhaps the taking of SENTIENT life maybe the trigger for the corruptive properties of Thorn.

I find poetic how most of the people who like Thorn LIKE Thorn, weird how life mimics art. I myself initially grinded for Thorn in D1 because it was cool, and the more I played with it the more I liked it, even after the big nerfs it stayed my favorite weapon in the game. The sounds, the feels, the mind games of using the dot ticks as tracking, it's all so great
I loved the base rose handcannon I wish I could use it again, it's sitting in my vault, waiting, watching

Never thought I'd see Dredgen Yor and the Speaker agree on something: The Light exists in all places.
kind of interesting how the signature gun of an infamous titan, who was hunted down by an even more infamous hunter, is now two separate guns that both have properties that work best in the hands of a warlock(necrotic grip, benevolent dawn). hell, now Thorn finally has lore of it being handled with by a warlock.
on a separate note, im betting the green darkness element being the Thorn's element, maybe called corruption, and if it is so, im wondering how the subclass will play around necrotic grip's exotic perks
Byf, do you think Destiny 2 will end with our Guradians Death, and we have to start a new one, or do you think that was only an alternate timeline.
Well since Destiny 2 itself isn't really planned to have an end in my book it's safe to assume that was just a cheeky play on a alternative timeline.
I personally think that what Jana had was just one of the thorn replicas made by members of the shadows of yor. As I don't see Shin being that irresponsible with the weapon of dredgen yor. Also the replicas are still very deadly weapons, even if they aren't inherently paracausal like the original. So while they can't prevent a guardian from reviving, they can certainly still kill and want to kill. Not to mention that even our character, who is probably one of, if not, the most powerful guardians to ever exist, suffered extreme nausea from just handling the original thorn. Also I doubt the vanguard would permit the real thing to be experimented on or even continued to exist solely based on the extremely high likelihood of corruption.

Not exactly related to the video but the ttk title screen music brought me back years.
So shin was always a guardian, but he aged normally between when he was revived after the fallen attack that killed him and when he reconnected with the light through Jaren’s ghost.
I think that the lore tab is from the perspective of TAEKO 3, who kills Jana 14. Taeko dies in the Savathun song strike and at the end says that this happend before an evacuation, so the lore must happened before the red war.

The lore tab mentioned the lab recordings were recovered after the evacuation. Could that just be immediately after the Red War, when everyone returned to the City?
My guess is Jana possiblity found it during/conclusion of the red war. Because of the destruction of the city, shin could've possibly lost track of it. This would lead to Jana finding it and experimenting during the first year. This could also lead into her becoming a dredgen toting the thorn and necrotic grips. Shin gets wind of this, hunts her down, executes justice, and then stows the gun away.
Or possibly she found it before the red war and in the destruction of the city, it damages the gun. Then shin stores it away

A lore video on my favorite thing in all of destiny, but one question still remains...What or Who is the Devourer? For all things Thorn, the Devourer is made reference.

The group that stopped Shin from killing those Dredgens that one time wasn’t the Hidden. It was Aunor and the Praxic Order (although she’s also one of Ikora’s Hidden)

How does killing a guardian permanently work?
I know weapons of sorrow can, but there seem to be other ways to.
-Eramis is said to have been responsible for many final deaths at Twilight Gap, way before Stasis powers
-Felwinter executed many Risen who had broken the Iron Decree
So how can final deaths *actually* be caused? The cages now used by the Psions seem unnecessary if some Fallen, without any para-causal power, were able to hand out multiple final deaths all the way back at Twilight Gap, and Thorns seem unnecessary if Felwinter was just able to use a shotgun to hand out final deaths all the way back in the Dark Ages.
It's implied that guardians can imbue the light into there guns, giving them the para-casual nature needed to destroy ghosts.
As for twilight gap I chalk that up to the gap having lethal/darkness zones. After all they're not just a game mechanic, there genuinely are areas in the Destiny world where the light is to weak for a ghost to bring back an guardian and effectively they experience final death even if there ghost is alive.
I love the sheer irony of the writing in Necrotic Grips' lore. That it co-opts and turns your heart against you... When that's exactly what the grips did. It changed Jana into a vehicle for death. Maybe not physically, but ideologically, it did. Causing accidents for the sake of research isn't even morally ambiguous, it's dishonest, manipulative and vile.
And he fell for it.

Byf any chance of a video on the new Trials of Osiris armor and that lore? It's some good stuff that is more personal and contained to the characters involved, but i feel it should get a bit of a highlight
