  • One of the takes of the original version of the song "Water On The Brain" (Allan Holdsworth) we did, from the recording sessions of the "I.O.U." album back in 1980. Never got used. Big shame! Here's a cassette copy of a rough mix of the performance, as it originally was and true to how we used to perform it in the formative days… as a song!
    Allan Holdsworth - Guitars/Composer
    Paul Williams - Vocals
    Paul Carmichael - Bass
Gary Husband - Gretsch Drums / Zildjian Cymbals.
The Barge Studio, Little Venice, W. London.
    Engineer: Andy Llewellyn

Wow. A priceless and rare piece of musical history heard for the first time for free on the internet. It's like opening up a victoria secret catalog and a Rembrandt painting no one has ever seen falls out from the center.

Gary, you have been my inspiration as a drummer. Always loved your style ever since I listened to your drums. So musical, so genuine. You said in one interview that you do not count beats unlike many others and that really fascinates me. You said you feel it. Your piano rendition to AH tunes is just incredible. You are the musician's musician. Thank you.

almost 40 years ago, and still now insuperable!!! please, someone can tell me if eventually after 40 years there is now some guitarist able to play as Allan did that time, long time ago? i think no, still today no one guitarist can play as Holdswoth. And that drumming from Gary Husband was totally innovative, they were young, thet were fantastic!!!!!!! all band! Miss Allan very much (R.I.P.) thanks Gary for this wonderful and very precious post.

Thanks very much for this Gary. Great photos too. I've see you with Allan on a few occasions. The Bass Cleff Club in London 1986 when Steve Topping got up with you all, Jimmy Johnson on bass and Kei Akagi on keyboard. Allan's synthaxe took up half the venue! I've got load of photos from that gig. I also met you and Allan at the sound check in Aberdeen in1994. If memory serves, you were playing the piano (very impressively) before the sound check. I still can't believe Allan is no longer with us.

I've just been playing my rare vinyl copy of the Original IOU album actually....With tracks like 'Where is One' I'd forgotten how atmospheric it was. & ambient . When I heard 'Water on The Brain Part 2' on the Road Games album released a year later with Jeff Berlin's solo on it I always wondered where 'Part 1' was ....lol....Now all these years later I've FOUND it....Eureka ....lol .....Were some of these photos taken on 'THE BARGE' ? where IOU was recorded ? ....There is a picture of a young GARY which looks like it might be....I think Gary was a SUPERB drummer for Allan because like him he was such a GREAT IMPROVISER....Allan had always felt stultified being asked to play scripted solos & timings on other people's projects but Gary was another 'Take the improvising ball & run with it players' ...So Gary was giving Allan all the free space & latitude to honestly express himself as a musician.... Previously in bands like UK people were saying to Allan - 'That solo was so good we want you to play it EXACTLY the same' ....But to Allan that was like putting Jonathan Livingstone Seagull in a CAGE......But with GARY that prison DISAPPEARED... Gary & Allan would just say to each other - 'Lets GO & just see what happens.' ....& if anyone else said - 'But go where' ? Gary & Allan would reply -'Who care's where, We JUST GO' ! ....lol ...Yeah.👍👍👍👍👍& they created brilliant stuff.

Garry, first what an honor to be able to thank you for your part on the mythical i.o.u album. Probably amongst the most musical avant-garde album ever recorded. I was so glad to hear you had a big part to play in this gem from Allan. I'd really like to know (from a drummer perspective) what is the time signature of the main part (A) of Water on the brain. I figured the parts in 4/4 but something eludes me about the main groove. I do feel its a form of 7/4 alternating with something?

I miss the the sound of tape saturation. The sound of everything is gorgeous here. Loved the way this band played together. The phrasing is so much more organic and it just makes the song come alive in a way I never got from the released version and the vocals really suit the track. Im really liking the bass😎. I’m pleased Gary put it up. It’s a banger.
