Those extended legato lines are just incredible. He could literally do anything he wanted on the neck. the normal physiological and biomechanical limitation us mortal suffer just didn’t apply to Allan. Extreme Talent + endless dedication = Allan
Wow - for anybody else, this guitar solo would be the greatest solo they'd ever played in their entire life, and it woud be talked about for decades. For Allan, it's just another gig in Rome...and he probably thought he sucked.
He almost killed guitar playing for me..... I borrowed “metal fatigue” from the library and couldn’t play for days after hearing it! Everything I tried sounded so lame!
Absolutely! I’ve always considered Allan’s music “psychedelic”, the tone, phrasing, and chords Allan uses often remind me of psychedelic electronic/ambient music, and his solo stuff is one of the few things I’d categorize as “psychedelic jazz fusion”, along with Ozric Tentacles
The ultimate trio as for me, and "the sixteen men of tain" as my favorite Holdsworth album. The most "jazz" oriented of Allan's band due to Novak and Carpenter immense swing skill. Salut les artistes!
Its very sad that Dave and Allan are both gone now. My brother Kevin did alot of gigs with Dave in L.A and the last time Dave and I tallked was at my brothers tribute in Pasadena in 04.. Rip Dave, Kevin and Allan... Rob Tullius
For people who ever saw Mr Holdsworth play the scene is etched in your mind for life damm this is a fucking monster seen him 4 times 1st time with Tony Williams life times thanks for opening your musical soul to us you 🤝
Saw him play IOU tunes in a London pub in 1980. Spine tingling when he swelled the chords with long delay. Most creative innovative guitarist in the country & he virtually had to pay to play 🤔
One of a kind - truly a master & the musicians that he worked with !!! Un believable -back in mid 90’s I met him at Dallas Guitar Show he was in a booth demoing new less he came out with think it was his friends booth at West Guitars in California ?? It was a while ago- we walked down to beer booth lol (he wanted an ale) I said man I loved your early work !!! He turned to me & said “sorry about that “ like apologizing lol !!! One of a kind !!!!
He does the intro all speeded-up in this performance, as if to just "get on with it", or something in front of a live audience. I still like the slower intro better, for the suspense..
you are welcome, some years later I saw him before a concert, I gave him a copy of this show and I asked him to video record again, but he did not allow me.
saw the "Gnarly Geezer here in Cali . . . Never heard this one played live! I hope I live to see Shallow Sea someday . . . A friend of mine has a phucken bad ass version of this tune on cassette tape, but he's nowhere to be found lately.
EsaelPaggin024 I think he should officially retire. I really didn't enjoy his last tour, from what I've seen on you tube. He's a shell of his former self. I don't mean to disrespect him or nutin'.
I agree. And i also think that he's a shell of his former self. It's almost unbearable, nowadays his playing seems to be made up of 99% "outside" runs that just sound belligerent - and his abilities are fading away. Much love to the man, i'm a HUGE fan, but he definitely isn't all there anymore.
You might know this, but he plays pentatonic, though different than everyone else...except that now many have copied him. His are 3 note per string "stretch" configurations that don't sound bluesy.
this music is too complicated for most of the prisoners I teach to. I could say 1 over 20 would appreciate but they are always happy to do something different there.

He was simply mind boggling to say the very least.

Allan Holdsworth=REAL genius
Басист очень хорош👍👍
From horses mouth.......HATED ANY RECORDING!!!
Shallow Sea is a guitar psychedelic masterpiece.
The volume swell intro on the studio album...for me a transcendent emotional / moving swell piece.

Learning it is so fun!
I think this period was some of the best of Allan. Dave Carpenter was also a great bassist.
The ultimate trio as for me, and "the sixteen men of tain" as my favorite Holdsworth album. The most "jazz" oriented of Allan's band due to Novak and Carpenter immense swing skill. Salut les artistes!
16 is my fav as well from the very first tune. 🎵
I’m in Tain right now , about to play Tain golf course… and there are 16 of us… Spooky
yes the sixteen men of tain is really incredible wonderfull sound of strange beauty !!!!!!
Holdsworth's greatest lineup
Its very sad that Dave and Allan are both gone now. My brother Kevin did alot of gigs with Dave in L.A and the last time Dave and I tallked was at my brothers tribute in Pasadena in 04.. Rip Dave, Kevin and Allan... Rob Tullius
Unbelievable. There will never be another. And Dave too. RIP. What an incredible trio they were.
!
Gary Novak is my favorite of AH's drummers as well. This trio is THE top for me.
Unbe-fraking-livable, there are lines in that solo that are so smoking hot, I feel my headphones melting.
There are parts in the song where Allan and Dave where one. Absolutely wonderful!!!

Man, what an incredible melodic solo from Allan
A genius, influenced my playing for years.
What a treasure of a recording. Thanks for asking the legend himself for this!
God of the gods of the guitar
la velocidad y limpieza de su toque, mas su obra musical adelantada y única, lo convierten en un tesoro en la historia de la música.
Creo que tienes razon
I admit that it's a bit of a complicated song to perform live, but Allan made it very simple with his genius. He was the best.
What a great version!! Allan is smiling!!!!!
Finding a live video of Shallow Sea is an awesome surprise! Outstanding!!
searched for years to hear this live Alan & Dave Bless your souls Godspeed this composition is etch in my mind thanks RIP both gentlmen🙏🏼
Holy crap! this is a great find. Allan was ON that night.
This made me laugh like a little kid it was so unbelievable!

I love this track. Never heard it live! Brilliant as usual.
The look at 6.48. We fuckin nailed it.
Pure freedom, thanks

Nice story and thx for uploading. Same tour I saw this trio in Amsterdam, still have the minidisktape I secretly recorded of the show!
you are welcome, some years later I saw him before a concert, I gave him a copy of this show and I asked him to video record again, but he did not allow me.
I guess ill have to assume thats novak on drums, notthe version i was looking for, still worth the listen
AMAAAAAAAAAAZINGGGG. I´ve never see in video!!!
Thanks for posting. Such a great performance. Also, this song is called, 'Shallow Sea'.
right, thank you.
i agree !!!
This tune kicks ass better than the record version
***** dave carpenter on drums?
Dave carpenter is the bass player
What happened to dave he was so young.
Norbi Udeako ...heart attack..age 48....R.I.P
@@cosmicman621 😢 so sad I didn't know. They are playing in other dimensions now. Have a good day

Super !!!!!!!!!!!!
Listen to that intro! Like and alien is playing the guitar

His location unknown at this time all I know is that he was in the process of getting evicted.
Aliens!!! ❤️🔥
greetings from Berlin !
I was there!!!
Afterwards, they broke the mold.
I think music sometimes says what all the poets combined...?
New material!
Whatchu mean? This is off of I.O.U.
EsaelPaggin024
Yeah but I've never seen it before, and it was recently posted. I don't think we'll see new AH material again.
I know. It's very depressing. I was really looking forward to that "Snakes and Ladders" thing to happen. Allan hasn't aged well, it's sad.

Great vid and story! What did prisoners think, did you get to show them this clip?

@@antonjjok I would think so too. But it is never waste of time to introduce Holdsworth`s music to someone! Good job!
Did anyone spot that wrong note in there?
The title of this song is wrong.
It's not "shallow sea", it's " deep sea"..
IOU is the best album ! Well, a damn good one. They're all great. It sounds like Allan is rushing the song though.
Shame about the audio quality. He was on fire this night.
So ¿We are the prisoners?
I have sent him the tape and asked him to post a couple of pieces
His chords need no accompanyment.
Dang no wonder he used a headless this sounds so clunky
Sooo...were you bullshitting him or not?
No!

Almost a parody of jazz.
