Escape from the urban jungle found Dr. and Mrs. Patel yearning for a simpler life. Leaving the bustling streets of Chennai behind, they embarked on a new chapter, acquiring a sprawling 2-acre oasis on the city's outskirts. Their vision? A 2-bedroom haven that embraced the spirit of the past, yet stood with a modern gaze. We, the architects, were entrusted with weaving this dream into reality.
Our design revolved around a central theme - a nostalgic connection to nature. A dual courtyard, stretching east to west, became the house's beating heart. Acting as a bridge, it linked the living and kitchen on one end to the bedrooms on the other, ensuring both privacy and a constant dialogue with the outdoors. Exposed brick and cement plaster, reminiscent of Mrs. Patel's childhood village visits, became the house's signature. This choice fostered a beautiful symbiosis between the interiors and the natural world outside. The exposed brick, with its unique variations in texture and color, promised to age gracefully, becoming a living testament to time's passage.
Stepping through the entrance, one encounters a cantilevered slab, a thoughtful feature that shields the home from the harsh sun while inviting in cooling breezes. The living area, strategically placed to overlook the courtyard, exudes a sense of calm. Grey oxide flooring, adorned with granite inlays, partnered with a filler slab ceiling, conspired to keep the interior comfortably cool. Thin strips of glass, strategically placed, not only broke the monotony of the flooring but also prevented cracks from forming. To further enhance the character of the space, we carefully curated wooden and brass antiques, each one a treasure unearthed from various corners of Tamil Nadu.
The dining room, accessed through an impressive 9-foot wooden and glass door, served as a testament to the home's subtle traditional elegance. Athangudi tiles, sourced from Karaikudi, lent a touch of understated heritage to the space. The western courtyard, an oasis of tranquility, featured an intricate brick parametric wall flanked by tall plants. This captivating wall served a dual purpose - balancing the visual weight of exposed brick and concrete while filtering the harsh western light. The carefully crafted brickwork formed a wave-like pattern, creating a mesmerizing play of light and shadow throughout the day. In stark contrast, the eastern courtyard boasted a majestic Chinese Ficus tree, a beacon of life amidst the strong lines of brutalist architecture. Folding gates opened up to reveal a lush green haven, its beauty extending seamlessly into the dining and courtyard spaces. All the while, the courtyards, acting as the lungs of the house, ensured a naturally cool and refreshing environment throughout.
