And after no response to my warranty queries decided, after being inspired by yourself video, it was only going to get fixed if I did it myself. I ordered the same O rings, opened up the unit to find some metal swarth inbedded in the original O ring. I swapped our the O ring, topped up the fluid with hydraulic jack oil, reassembled with blue thread lock, and no more leaks. The only thing I did different was I removed the unit from the frame so when i disassembled the unit I could lift the impeller straight up and out, leaving the heatsink housing on the bench with the hydraulic fluid still in it, and almost no mess....
Very sad to see a company treating its consumer this way. They showed no interest in solving your problem. I use an Elite Classic Trainer, the name is Elite New Force, it has 8 levels of difficulty, and the price is very affordable, it is not flowing, and his flywheel seems bigger, pedaling becomes much more natural, and it is much better to train. Anyway, the video is very interesting and well done, I've seen other people with problems in leaky Trainers.This is definitely going to help a lot of people.
Got a PERFORMANCE Fluid Trainer that’s is free spinning so I think the fluid is all gone. Guess that can happen over 20 years! Feel more confident in taking apart now, Thanks from Alabama.
My old JetBlack fluid trainer of previous model lasted for almost 10 years or so and I sold it for pennies to someone when moving. New Z1 lasted for a year and needs bearings replacement. Not sure if that generalizes, but now I have to take it apart, including fluid replacement. Oh, and BTW I have received the following answer about fluid from JetBlack: "We recommend 50 weight oil for our fluid trainers"
"Fluid, you need fluid? That'll be a hundred bucks." And I grin. Thanks for this video and nice work--and hopefully the company will buy a bag of o-rings so they can send one to every customer who needs one.
Great DIY video. These companies that won't sell you such a simple part no doubt expect you to buy another trainer. Had a similar situation with a gas caddy and pump from Amazon. On the 3rd time ever using the pump, gas suddenly sprayed everywhere. Had there been a spark I wouldn't be around to type this comment. The gasket they used most likely wasn't gasoline resistant and shrank. The company said they could not sell me a replacement but only a whole new pump. I could not find a replacement gasket anywhere. I ended up having to buy a 12v car gas pump and rubber hoses to extract the gas from the 25 gallon container.
You can use also the fluid used for cars automatic transmision. Or for who is working in the aviation industry, MIL 5606 is also a good alternative, used on most landing gear oleos, helicopter hydraulic systems.
Hi Mr. OZ Cycle. One more time, fantastic DIY. But, I am really disappointed with warranty replacement from JetBlack rolling. Fortunately, we don't have that brand here in Brazil. If we had, I would consider to buy another brand. Not for the product itself, It seems a good product, but for the respect with the consumer (for only 6 cents. one O ring). Looks like ATF fluid Steve. I have a viscosity cup that for paint that could be used to.determine the weight of oil. Those nitrile seals are probably.better than.The standard seal. I use teflon silicon O rings where possible.

The Jet Black unit is a pretty cheap unit, Ive used the same one for over five years and was expecting it to die quite quickly considering the price , Seems like you had the worst potential failure (O-ring) but nailed the repair, nice work.
Great job.you can also add permatex (the glue nnoun that we put at engine 's same parts or to transmition 's.its liquid but it will be solid in many minutes) that a ring,or them both .But why you use the same ATF oil and you add parafin?if y just add ATF oil dexton 3(the new)i think its better and it doesn t overheat(not be warm easy). anyway.if your trainer be hot add an pc 's cooler :) :) .Cold oil means more resistance.

So I sent them an email and posted on their Facebook page... they told me to buy a new unit from a distributor. Possibly the worst customer service in history. Sad really, at it was a really good, and very quiet trainer. Sometime in the next week or so when I get time, I’m going to pull it apart and try this for myself. Maybe replace the old fluid. Just a quick question though. What was the paraffin for? Thinner? Is quantities/ratios relevant? Thankfully winter is coming to an end in Melbourne and getting back outside is more of an option, but you just can’t beat a trainer for a quick 10 or 20 min HIIT session..thanks again..
Yeh,nice weather coming Lee for us Ozzies. The paraffin oil was a top up for what was lost during the repair job. You can use either paraffin oil or light hydraulic fluid in your Z1 trainer.
Oz, do you think changing the type/viscosity of oil could be used to change the resistance? I am using a different brand fluid trainer but have wondered. I'm still learning the one I have but it would be nice if I could put a thicker oil in there if it would increase resistance.

Oz., my trainer isn't leaking but smells burned and gets too hot to touch. Should I replace the oil or push it to failure? I bought it used, no idea what the usage was before I got it. I use it about 4 hours a week during the "Game of Thrones" Utah, USA winters.
Shit company. Who doesnt keep seals on hand for customers. Then dont offer shit, oh buy a new one. Wtf??????? I wonder what percentage of customers have this issue. I would never buy from them.
I realy like your videos, but this one went bad. 1st you shoud hav had dissasebled the resistance unit and opened it verticaly so that the fluis wouldnt leak out 2nd The fluid if probably hidraulic fluid, not sure, but you dont have the specs for it nor the quantity. 3rd The seal could be a special kind of rubber not to be damaged by the fluid or temperature. 4th The bolts should be tighten accorting to the recomended torque and not tight randomly Hope you dont get upset by my comments, and continue with your videos. P.S. English is not my main language so forgive me for some mistakes
No probs Paulo. If it failed I would have to just buy a new unit anyhow. It all works fine still,been riding on it all this winter and its just like new.....otherwise I wouldnt have done the video on it. Cheers.
Hey Paul, I don't want to make a THING of of this, so, in my oppinion it went bad because of the reasons I posted, when you change the specifications you will end up with a diferent result, but if oz cycle is pleased with the results, great for him. And to answer you about the tightening of the bolts, can you tighten bolts evenly? I can't, at least without a propper tool, and one again, if it doesnt leak and he likes it, great, I have no problem with this. Don't take this personaly, oz cycle didn't either. From an engineer point of vew, I wouldnt change the specifications because you might not know the end results. cheers

excellent video! After reading a bit about fluid trainers, the leaking bit was a bit of a concern. Now it looks real easy to fix

Yes , oil viscocity would vary the resistance. Would also put more force at the tyre-roller contact point tho.
That's what l want to do with my Cyclops trainer it spins to easily.

You can use light hydraulic fluid or paraffin oil....both are safe to use.
Just wondering if you up the viscosity you end up with a bit stronger resistance?

Could it be low in fluid?
oz cycle I don’t see any leaks but it is possible that it was low when I got it. I’ll let you know what I find.

Its usually a mineral oil of medium to light viscocity.
