  • Liquefaction is a phenomenon where saturated sand and silt take on the characteristics of a liquid during the intense shaking of an earthquake. It take place when a quake has increased water pressure in saturated soil and made particles in the soil lose contact with each other, making the soil particularly sand soil - act like liquid. The effect has been likened to slapping a wet , hard beach and the sand beneath you palm becomes jelly.
    Last minute video for UTHM Geofest'14 group presentation.

    Y does this only happen in Japan? Y doesn't it occur in all areas with seismic activity? Or is it actually occurring in other areas with seismic activity?

    • @kylehayes93
      @kylehayes93 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This can happen to any primarily sandy soil that is below the water table under any seismic activity. It is not exclusive to Japan, though you may hear about it more happening in Japan due to Japan being very earthquake prone. This happens in New Zealand quite often as well.

      generally, is more like density concept.as we know, water is very light density then soil and superstructure/building as shown on this video. thus while liquefaction occur, which thing is very high density then water will deserved go downward.

    Sort of a misnomer. The soil does not liquefy but rather water simply moves. At least that is how I look at it. If no water below soil then no liquefaction could happen so rather water displaces into soil. Would be more accurate to say "Water solidification."
