Your description of pressure gradients by going up and down, made realize there is MORE than one up and down! We typically talk about up and down based on the earth, because it is the biggest gravitational force we directly experience as humans on the planet. But if we move away from the earth, there is another gravity pulling 'down' in the Sun, on each of the planets, on our moon, etc. Down is really towards a gravitational pull, up is really away from a gravitational pull. My mind is tickled.
