Here is a tip. Do the manual door lock rod from the top, like he ended up doing. But First, remove the little rubber grommet from the actuator hole where the rod fits into and slightly slide that grommet on the rod. It's easier to get the rod in the actuator hole. Then slide the grommet while on the rod and press it into the hole while the rod is in there.
Thank you for the tip. I tried this and it didn't work too well for me. Eventually, what worked for me was sliding the actuator up inside the door as far as possible so the hole with the rubber grommet was visible in the oblong hole in the door where the lock rod enters inside the door. Once the rod was attached in the hole, I slid the actuator back down to mount in the correct location, and finally clip in the rod to the outside door handle.
I know this is super old but me and my grandpa were having the same problem with his car we did everything correctly but for some weird reason the lock doesn’t go up or down when fully installed it basically doesn’t let you lock it….does anyone know what the problem is?
This is the only video I can find that's similar to my 2008 Saturn Aura. I need to replace right rear door and drivers door lock actuators. Thank you for posting.
I can't thank you enough for making this video. I have a 2008 Malibu and the dealer wanted to charge me 150.00 for the parts and 200.00 to fix one door, and I have to fix all 4 at this point. After watching your video, I order a replacement from Amazon for 88.00 and installed it. I took my time and it took me about an hour and a half to finish. If I didn't see your video it would have taken a lot longer and would have made a lot of mistakes. Next up i'm going to order 3 more replacements and do the installs. One thing I noticed while doing it was the lock button rod. To attache I connected the power wire and fed the actuator though the opening in the door. I raised the mechanize as high as I could inside the door. I was able to thread the lock button rod fairly easily because I could see the rod hole through the rod opening at the top of the door. After I attached the rod, I lowered it and screwed it into the door. After that I connected the rod to the outside handle and finished up. Thanks again!
You are truly talented yourself. While editing the video, I realized your way would have been better. BTW I didn't leave all my mistakes in the final edit. This was also my first time doing this. Thanks for your comment, very inspiring to keep making more!
I did the second of the two back doors this morning. I have another tip. Don't loosen any of the three bolts holding the old actuator to the car door before you pop apart the little yellow clip that holds the rod from the outside door handle. You want that old actuator to be firmly rigid in order to get a small screwdriver in the clip to pop it apart and free that rod. I spent less than 1.5 hours doing the second door, total time, and took a couple of breaks because it was going so well.
Thank you so much for the video, will be doing this soon. I am selling my 2009 impala as my husband bought me a new car. But I figure I fix my door locks before selling it and making it someone elses problem. Damn conscience wont let me sell it without repairing it hahaha
Thanks for this! I've got to do at least 2 or 3 doors, so going to buy the whole kit (for all 4), and I may install some Noico while I'm there. Have to replace a window regulator, too, so it's a project for sure. Take care!
You really have your hands full. I am posting a video this week about changing front speakers on the Malibu The video will include driver door interior panel removal. Thanks for watching and good luck with yours!
Thanks for the video. I actually had my wife help me (she did fantastic for someone not so mechanically inclined) since I could not get my thick wrists into this opening. Actually, I cut my wrist as there is not much room between the inner door panel stamping and the window Styrofoam rest. We actually started one of the three mounting bolts to hold the actuator in place to get that manual rod back in place.
Tried to take the weather strip off the right side back door and messed that up on the top plus this other part I saw videos of someone using a heat gun taking the weather strip off but I got the windows out of that door I was gonna remove the weather strips and the outer metal out of all doors but since I messed a little up on that door and I don't see a 2008 Chevy Malibu video on TH-cam won't be taking weather strips off none of the other doors after paint the Malibu will get that door stuff fixed at a shop I got off a lot though since had messaged you on here before the door knobs all doors, hood, trunk inside panels all, outside sideview mirrors, grille in front and rear bumper which the grille and rear bumper were hard to take off. I ended up buying a new battery and a automatic key lock to open the trunk. It took about 4 or 5 weeks for me to take all that off which was done with that in June. It's other stuff wrong with it though more than one but taking stuff off my GMC Canyon 07 would be easier than the Malibu and it has less plastic on it because the rear view bumper on the 08 Malibu is plastic.
That's weird. I would think that if the actuator was bad then you should still be able to manually unlock it. Maybe something has come loose inside the door... a clip partially broken? Just a guess.
The one on the video it just quit working. Now, sometimes none of them work or sometimes just one won't work. Sometimes they all work for a long time and then act up again. The more often I click the fob, the weaker the click sound is. Weird. I haven't figured this one out yet.
I'm already stressed all out just watching you do this!! I have little patience and hyperactive.. I can just see me having to replace all three of these that are bad on my car!!
I would add. Take off the manual lock arm. Move the lock in and up as far as it can go. Put in the manual lack arm and insert it into its home. And I see you have as many cuts on your arm as I did after done.
all four locks work when they want to on my 09 and when i push the lock button on drivers and passenger side nothing happens. what could be the problem and how much part wise to do it yourself
+Nelson Ramirez From what I remember, this took me 3-4 hours but recording everything often doubles the actual time that it should take. 2 hours should be enough time.
mine too! i've had really bad wiring problems with mine. misfiring cylinders because of loose wires in the harnesses attached to the ignition coils. speakers turn off and on randomly. I really hope replacing the two actuators will fix the door lock problem, and it's not just more bad wiring
hello chum i have to do it at driver side i will go to the scrap yard to get the part for 50 dollard, dont buy Chevrolet buy Honda or Toyota that my next car.i just finish to pay, and and i still pay for parts, just imagine the guy that dont now mecanic he he the poor house he he

Thanks for the info. I pinned your comment to the top so everyone can read this tip.
I just did this, much easier. Total job took me 10 minutes (thanks to this video for giving me a heads up with what I will be expecting)

6 yrs since u posted this, going to give it a try today. thank you!
Happy to help!

Glad you liked the video. Happy to help!
The birds stole the show!!! 🤣😂🤣Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!!

Just did this repair, thank you for this video! I could not have done it without it!
Happy to help,! Your comment is much appreciated!
Thank you very much, Sir, for this video! My left rear lock started to fail today. Thanks to you I can no confidently replace it myself!!!
This is not an easy place to get your hands into. Hope you have small hands. Your comment is much appreciated, thanks!

MudRFunR just reminded me - have to do the speakers as well 😳
@@bflatbrass I will try to have that video posted for you tomorrow.
MudRFunR Sounds good my friend! Thank you for everything 🙂
@@bflatbrass It's posted. You're welcome.

Sounds like your wife is a keeper. My wife bales me out often as well. Thanks for watching!

Couldn't get the 3 screws loose holding the door actuator way too tight with a drill or a rachet :/ any advice
Would this be the cause of the door intermittently being locked ? Can’t open manually either.
Walk away and try again and door opens
That's weird. I would think that if the actuator was bad then you should still be able to manually unlock it. Maybe something has come loose inside the door... a clip partially broken? Just a guess.
Did yours get "weaker" over time like mine?
It's outrageous how little room they give you to remove & replace it.

great video and I liked the last part you said , "happy wife happy life"
So true isn't it?
Do you know where the rcdlr is located on the 2008 malibu ls?
Thanks for sharing this!
+Chloe Benson Beauty Boxes Hope this helps your son get his fixed. It is a very tight space inside the door.
I'm already stressed all out just watching you do this!! I have little patience and hyperactive.. I can just see me having to replace all three of these that are bad on my car!!
Have you attempted to fix your's yet? I barely had the patience to do one.
Hey man, could you please specify what Door Lock Actuator you bought? I mean the model number.
Thanks
I'm not really sure. All the packaging is long gone.
I would add. Take off the manual lock arm. Move the lock in and up as far as it can go. Put in the manual lack arm and insert it into its home. And I see you have as many cuts on your arm as I did after done.

If both buttons don't work, I would have suspect it's something electrical. Maybe (but not likely) a fuse.
I thought the cable came out of the small round hole in door
I have to fix all 4 door,it's 4 door using same model of actrator?
Not sure, but Amazon has the actuators listed as a different one for each door.
Another tip, reuse the original yellow plastic rod lock rather than the Chinese orange one, mine let loose of the rod after a week
Your probably right. Lucky me, mine is still holding together 3 years later.
I have this problem but door is stuck shut? Any way to open?
Sorry for the late reply. I honestly don't know how to open a door if it's locked shut.
Do you remember how long it took you?
+Nelson Ramirez From what I remember, this took me 3-4 hours but recording everything often doubles the actual time that it should take. 2 hours should be enough time.
My rear doors locks won't open or close only the front

Same. Had mine break after I locked and closed my drivers door, have to try and get the door open first which is gonna be hard.
Wow just more silly ass shit I gotta do to a Gotdam car but thanks though
It’s expensive 🤔
I don't recall the actual price but yes I remember it being much more than I expected. Hope you can get yours fixed.
GM part number 22865519. And I would get the OEM. it comes with a new cable.
does not look fun. thanks for the vid.
+FU420B It is a nasty job. Requires patience, a desire to scrape up your arm and the ability to see with your fingertips.
