    It’s hard for me to believe that a bass will smash an Alabama rig with all that wire on it and then be turned off by a clip on a crankbait.

    Oval Split Rings are better than the Round Split Rings, because they allow the lure to have More Movement & maintain the Ring Strength.

      If they were needed they would incur that small cost. Or for the few that think they are necessary a loop knot will work good enough to determine if a change is needed.

    Norman speed clips...the convenience of a snap but they're round at the connection point like a split ring. I use them on all my hard baits. I don't think one could fail, unless you tied 100lb test to it and pulled it with the boat, based upon the engineering. design. They can be a little more difficult to attach than others though, especially with cold fingers.

    I respect your opinion but literally I’ve never had a snap fail and constantly having to retie hard baits all day is something I have no interest in doing. Besides, Mikey Balzz - the greatest non pro YT bass fisherman on the planet swears by them which is good enough for me - BTW, my snaps are half the size of the one you showed and are black which can’t be seen in the tannic waters of Florida

      Spot on! Smaller Top Quality snaps work great. I'm a Florida guy, too, and if FL bass can see my snap going by at burning speed in tannin water, they can easily see my hooks. So good luck in them eating anything I'm throwing!

    • @astrophysicistguy
      @astrophysicistguy ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@shawnwheeler4633 exactly. I just don’t buy those arguments given almost every hard ball you use has exposed hooks which are far more visible than and snap. Fisherman love to rationalize their decisions after the fact. If snaps can hold up to Florida bass they can stand up to any bass. Bass simply don’t possess the requisite intelligence to make the kind of fine distinctions Randy likes giving them credit for. I fished for yellowfin tuna and blue marlin for 25 yrs and dolphin and porpoise are always found around tuna. In 25 yrs we never ONCE hooked a dolphin and we used live bats frequently. Why, because dolphins have true intelligence unlike a bass which is simply using instinct

    Vmc snaps are super strong but agree that cheaper snaps do break. It's happened twice this summer on me. If you can think about how you can break wire by repeatedly bending back and forth, that's what happens with the cheap snaps.

    I prefer to tie direct to anything that doesn't require a loop knot, but I've used high quality JDM snaps on everything from crankbaits up to 10 inch swimbaits and even large saltwater plugs catching 40lb fish with zero issues. Actually, in several countries the popular way to attach many of the bigger saltwater baits is to tie off to a swivel with a split ring on it and just swap lures with the ring. I say use what makes sense for the specific lure.

      I’ve straightened lots of snaps out bass fishing. Used eagle claws size 2 and 3 which are 25 and 40 lb test. But they failed quite a bit. I used them because they are advertised as super strong, easy and fast to change out cranks and jerkbaits. They are not that strong. Lots of people here swear by them when I lost fish and lures quite a bit before I stopped using them. They do for sure fail. Are most people just catching 1 and 2 pound bass?

    They are not going to focus on a small snap when there are 3 hooks hanging down...lol.😂
    I always use the VMC Duolock Snaps. They are small and are 30lb test. I've never had any issues with them. One of my best days fishing jerkbaits was 5hr day and I landed 36 bass. I was using these snaps and I was throwing Stunna 112's. I'm sure my 10-12 lb test line will fail before 30 lb test snap will.😊

    I burn jerkbaits back pretty fast, especially for hybrid stripers, no bass is noticing a clip. maybe you want more of a wiggle and less of a slash on your jerkbait, tie right to the eye. Maybe you want nose down resting position, heavy split ring and heavy black barrel swivel should do it. And what about all the big bass caught by muskie fisherman using barrel swivel>heavy steel leader> heavy steel clip> jerkbait/swimbait?

  • @Six_One_Six
    @Six_One_Six ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I use good black snap swivels on everything, I have my entire life. I have NEVER seen the style I use straiten out. Even on massive braid, you couldn't pull it apart without leaving serious marks in your fingers. It's not as big a strike deterrent as you'd think. In terms of presentation, those giant janky looking hooks look way worse and they still bite it. I fish with people that use rings, swivels, snaps, snap swivels, direct tie, and it never has seemed to affect how many bites we get.The way we do it here, the line will always be the weakest link. Depending on what we're fishing for, we use 8-15 pound SeaGuar Invisx. I've had this conversation face to face before and handed someone a loop of 12 pound fluoro with either end tied to my snap swivel...go ahead and see if you can straiten that out without breaking the line. I've never seen it. I'll believe it when I see it. I've placed in the money in both bass AND walleye tournaments (as an amateur though) and I won't stop until I start losing fish lol. The benefits FAR outweigh the cons. For starters, I don't need 13 fishing poles on my boat so I can have half my tackle box rigged at all times. Since I have a day job, it allows me to cover as much water with as many lures as I need to without needing more than 4 rods. Most of us are also not using 300-600 dollar rods either. My old ugly stick catches fish as well as my new Lew's, and my expensive Shimano burns them back to the boat the same as my $50 Okuma...food for thought! I love your content man, we just gotta agree to disagree here! hahaha

    If it’s ok Randy id like to add something here about the split ring. I tie my knot opposite from where the split is. I used to tie where the split is and I feel that the knot would fail prematurely dew to the pointed ends of the split ring wire. The knot would eventually slide up against one of those two points and ware into it.

    Rosco clip to a jerkbait's split ring actually adds more action. A gunmetal clip to a flutterspoon's split-ring also adds extra action. They're very crucial for me personally when needing to work them slowly.

    There are a few improved options, i.e. Gama' tourney snaps, tactical angler micro mini clips, Norman speed clip etc..., over the old crankbait snaps of the past. Some probing observations; a) Throwing a plug on 6# to maybe 20# test line. b) The snaps are rated at 25# and up to 60 or 80#'s. so no weak link here c) the reels are usually rated at 11 - 24 # of drag and unlikely your rod could hold up 24# any way. If you think you have the stones, hook a 10# sack of potato's with your crankbait and pick it up off the ground with that $200 - $400 Megabass rod, now give it a little ...bounce... perhaps "pucker" is a better word? d) what are the trebles actually rated at? e) Head north a couple hours and they add a 4"-12" wire leader for bite offs from pike f) Never heard of a loop knot with better than 60% of line strength, direct tie can hit 80% or better. Other than small jigs, I'm in the direct tie to the split ring or some derivative camp. It's not to hard to come to the conclusion 50 years of marketing sure influences what people "know".

    I use a loop knot for jigs and any hard plastic that lacks a split ring. Always. And I tie my loop about the size of a split ring. The loop knot I use doesn't fail for me. I always have a leader tied on and it's plenty strong.
    It is funny that a snap will turn off a fish because it doesn't look natural, but they'll bite bass jigs, chatterbaits, and spinner baits that don't look like anything natural.
    I used to use very strong swivels with good snaps for trolling offshore so I could change lures quickly and to help with line twist. Tuna and mahi mahi lures can be twisty things. I never had one fail but I used marlin stuff for 30 lb fish. Inshore I only ever use a swivel to stop a sliding sinker on a Carolina rig with live bait. No snaps. No "tactical angler clips". Just a leader tied on the braid and a jig or whatever.

  • @daddad4589
    @daddad4589 ปีที่แล้ว

    Its true and I know the snap you are using and yes they will fail for larger fish. Through trial and erro I've went through all the snaps and only one kind will not fail for freshwater large bass and its the interlock snap and in a fairly large size I forget the size and I always swap out the barrel swivel with Spro powerswivels. No lost lunkers and I uses these to throw 8" punkers so you know it holds well. BTW never had all the bass complain about how the snap looked so ugly.. they hit it like it weren't even there.

  • @jimmyh6579

    As a rope nerd. I know that knots reduce the strength of a line by 20 to 60 percent. So i always shoot for as few knots as possible. Or use the knowledge that if a tie a knot on 20 lbs line. I realistically only have 8 to 16 lbs test depending on variables so i adjust the test depending on situations.

    Well… Don’t Jackhammer chatterbaits that we all throw have snaps on them and guys put them on 15 the 20lb fluro and Jack the hook and zero problem. So you are throwing a jerk or plug on 4 to 10 lb test and you don’t really set the hook…. So why does a clip work for one and not another? I mean on a jerk I get it a little, but I think two to three big ole trebles while it’s sitting might look a little off too if they are inspecting the bait. Doubt they say. Man looks good, I’m gonna eat that treble hooked minnow, oh wait, there’s a snap and not an o ring. I’m out

      Every bit of hardware is a strike deterrent. Give the bass more credit

    Randy another issue with the snap is that for guys that even use lighter pound test line that aren't capable of breaking the snap, it makes them lazy and they stopped re-tying. they go through to 3,4, even 5 lures changing them out after 200 casts. they've got that same last foot of line in the same knot and it fails. so that's why I don't use the snap because it makes you lazy.

    Don’t tie it to the eye of the lure? Where are you supposed to tie? Lol

    "Rosco Drop Shot Clips" they're the semi permanent ones used on chatter baits.
