Here's an experiment for any of you who have kids out there. I took my niece fishing for bluegill off a boat dock at Bull Shoals. She accidentally kicked the box off worms in the water. Needless to say we were out of live bait and i put a little piece of soft plastic on the end of her hook. She caught a couple gillies really quick. Then the fish wised up and they wouldn't touch the piece of plastic anymore. I decided to put some scent on the chunk of plastic and she started to catch one after another. I know bluegill aren't bass but i was amazed by how well scent on a tiny piece of rubber made the fish bite compared to no scent at all. Now she has graduated to bass fishing and anytime she throws a soft plastic she asks me for some scent to put on her lure. I know she's a believer but im still undecided myself. All i know is that it can't hurt.

After listening to your video and in reference to nobody ever creating a nightcrawler scent has anyone ever tried placing some plastic worms in a container or a bag of nightcrawlers for a few days to see if their scent will actually get applied to the plastic worms? Just a thought and thanks Randy for this great info!!

Bass want protein point blank. A bass can smell better than a blood hound, the bass will know that you only scented the soft plastic that clearly smells like a car tire to a human. Even if you put on a thin visible layer of smooth peanut butter they will not want it, only if you clumped the peanut butter on heavy they would only want it in finicky conditions as bass normally prefer a moving lure. Clumped on smooth peanut butter will not stay on a lure long at all anyways. In other words your scent idea would be to weak of a scent, especially knowing the scent would come off after about 7 casts.

    • @erichildreth7562

While river fishing with a friend he gave me a handful hellgrammites to trie. I put them in a bag of Zoom centipede green pumpkin. All he would use was live Hellgrammites on a jighead. He caught bigger smallmouth that day but I caught more smallmouth using centipede on split shot rig that had been in contact with live Hellgramites. Would this be legal for tournaments, just using lure that had been in contact with live bait?

You just opened my eyes pretty dang wide. I really liked this video. Saying that we shouldn't create a scent that guarantees a bite/ making fishing too easy is a bad idea in regards to sustaining fisheries is something I never even thought of. I really appreciated this take on the subject. Great grandpa always said "thats why they call it fishing, not catching".

I remember as a kid being told whatever you do dont get wd40 on your line if you used it on your reel (it was the 80s), but I always noticed I seemed to get more bites after I had used it on my reel...years later I read that some people literally swore by it as a fish attractant and would spray it on their lures, allegedly there's fish oil in it. Might be an urban legend but I think of it everytime I see wd40 in the store lol

I was a press observer at the 1991 Bassmaster Classic on Chesapeake Bay. I attended all three weigh-ins. The pro anglers never mentions using scents during interviews following each day (maybe scents were one of their secrets). Glitter, however, was mentioned by one or more anglers who said that plastic worms with glitter seemed to catch the attention of tidewater bass. At day three final new conference winner Ken Cook credited the spinnerbait and crank bait but did not mention scent. Ten minutes later word spread among press observers that he said a certain brand scent helped him win. I believe he was bribed. What? Too Strong a word? Then let us say a certain "fee" was offered, and accepted for his endorsement of a certain brand scent. Bear in mind this was when the concept of adding scents was introduced. Me? I've tried 'em. Didn't seem to work. But I'm careful about my hands, use unscented soap, use plastic gloves when filling gas into my bass boat. As a bass fisherman, I'm only mediocre at best. What do I know?

    Randy and fellow anglers,
You all should try Trophy Bass Super Gel from Pro Cure, especially for your down baits. I get way more bites when using Trophy Bass compared to no scent at all. Garlic is another great scent. My friend uses a garlic spray that is to be used in the kitchen and it works well. By the way, Pro Cure has a nightcrawler scent too.

I agree that live bait works wonders. however, scent is not the only difference between a live worm and an artificial. The live one is giving off a scent yes, however it's also giving off energy, vibrations,a life force if you will. All living things are emanating energy, waves or vibrations. animals are way more attuned to it than we are.

The Salt Strong guys say that fish's sense of smell can be 10,000 x stronger than a dog's. And in my experience Berkley Gulp lures definitely get bit a lot more than unscented soft plastics. Little tail biters don't go after unscented lures nearly as much as Gulp or other scented lures. Maybe it doesn't matter as much for faster lures but for jigs and slow lures I definitely believe scent helps. I also caught freshwater trout on their trout bait in jars with different scents like garlic. It doesn't look like food so it must be the smell that gets them to bite it.
I don't know if I agree that an artificial worm looks better than a real live one. Real ones wiggle and struggle against the hook. Artificials don't tighten up or do anything but go straight.
As far as bad scents go, bug repellent on your hands gets in lures and fish hate it. Smoking puts a bad smell on baits, nicotine is used to repell bugs from plants. Sunscreen is a turn off.
The Salt Strong guys did a great video about scents, good and bad. They mostly fish in the saltwater but I don't think it matters. Water carries scent and all fish can detect it.

Well, I really shouldn’t but here goes. I select what lures I’ll be starting with or think I’ll use and I will put them in a zip lock bag with a fresh chicken liver. Generally for 15 minutes or so. I have fished behind 3-4 boats fishing ahead of me and caught fish after they have worked the water pretty good. I’ve even had my lures hanging over the boat, in the water, and had fish to come up and strike it. I’m not saying this is a miracle scent but I do much better than many anglers I know and there are days when I don’t get a strike but through the years, I’ve done well. I believe sometimes, like you, the bass want meat and not action. The lure just moves the steak dish.

To me I think the scent covers up some artificial scent that fish might not like or there can be scents that may for some strange reason attract fish like garlic, coffee, anise, etc. What I really like about you Randy is that not everything is about money. You could do a video like this and regardless of what you believe be plugging some kind of scent, or paint for jig heads, but instead you go and tell it like it is.

I come from the UK and had a Carp bait company for 25 years there sense of smell is huge . The scent works on acidity which actually changes the electrical property of water so changes the signal in a fishes olfactory system. Now our European Salt water Bass have an extra set of "nostrels" the huge benefit of this is that the fish dosnt need a flow of water to move scents through the olfactory system . Their gill movement actually provides the vacum-pump to "sniff" water around them . Watching our bass hunt and dig out peeling crab in estuarys is something to behold . There are a few great science papers on this from European studys.

i always find that the scent helps when I'm fishing with limp/semi limp line with a senko/tube or when I'm fishing a bait that gets spat out really quick like a jig. they hold onto that bait, and always swallow it if i don't set the hook quick enough. i had to switch to circle hooks for some applications so i stop gut hooking them. scent is key for my winter fishing too, and when i don't use scent i notice that my bites are either short or spat out at least fifty percent of the time.
when i rub my baits up LIKE RANDY TAUGHT ME, i get little pores from the salt grains coming out of the plastic, and then i rub in some scent and it holds for a very long time, often until the bait has been bitten to hell and is unusable.
i always use scent made with real bait.

I use scent all the time and I am positive it helps me catch more fish. I have fished without it and caught nothing. Put some on and within the first 2-3 cast I would catch one. The scent I use the most is Liquid Mayhem. And it works. They use the creatures that the scent is. Like crawfish, worm, shad, etc.... I bought the crawfish with garlic and the fish love it. And I use it on my jigs, craws, and even my worms. Fish don't know it is craw scent on a worm. They just know it smells and taste good. On my moving baits I use Baitmate Live Scent Fish Attractant. And it works well but sure doesn't last long. The liquid Mayhem does last a while. It is a gell and sticks to the lure and comes off gradually. And will last 20-30 casts. The Baitmate seems to be gone after about 5. But I think it leaves the scent in the water like chumming. So I don't put more on every time I know there is no more on the lure. Get some Liquid Mayhem and you will catch more fish.

Maybe we need to start soaking our baits in dirt. 🤔😂🤙🏽 Hahaha such an interesting discussion man. Great vid. Personally I have never used any scent at all in my entire life. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I probably should to see if there is any difference haha but just never felt the need to. Totally agree on the reaction strike stuff, they don’t have the time to go sniff it, they’re just getting set off by their other senses for sure I think too. Slow presentations is what I find interesting here and maybe I’ll experiment but one thing I am pretty sure of is that nobody will ever be able to completely replicate REAL. Regardless of the smell of it, there are pulses and blood flowing and heart beating and whatever else, wether it’s a Shad, worm, craw, frog, lizard or whatever. You will even notice throwing live Shad that the dead ones don’t get hit as well as the ones that are still fresh and swimming. Even though that smell is the same. Alive is alive. 😎🤙🏽

As a auto mechanic, i was always into gas and oil products. And my wife always complained about my hands and arms even if i scrubed the skin off cleaning up. So i started wearing vinyl gloves at work and the problems ended. Brings my to fishing, i started wearing the gloves and adding a drop or two and covering the gloves with the sent. Then wiping it dry with a plain paper towels as to limit the sent all over all the equipment. The results were night and day difference, so to thus day i fuel the boat after the tournaments and then washing the boat before returning home and always fuel pickup the night before going to the lake. And as i stopped using the gloves i always use a drop or two on my hands and paper towel dry. Till i catch my first fish, then getting a good rub down from that pore fish and then towel wipe. Thinking that makes a difference at least in my mind it can😮t hurt .

The reason bass bite baits most times is simple, they don't have hands. If they had hands they'd poke or grab something wondering "what the heck is that?". So instead they use their mouth to see if something is food. In 1982 a friend won a tournament on a worm called a smelly crawler, one of the 1st scent laden baits I can recall. Tried scenes ever since and the only thing I can determine is it doesn't hurt. But can't say it helps either. I do think Powerbaits are better on working bedding fish though.

All I can say is that one place I fish, the baby mullet will nip at the tail of my plastic when there is scent on it and stop when it wears off. Reapply and they're back. I'm in Australia so you probably won't have heard of the scent in question which is called S-factor made by Squidgies (Shimano). I don't always use it, just 99% of the time. There has actually been quite a bit of research about bass sense of taste and smell and the science is pretty clear - bass can not detect anything that is oil-based. Water soluble is a completely different story which is why BaitFuel works so well - it’s the first water solvable scent. The other aspect is taste and if these products enable bass to hold onto the bait longer because it tastes more like a real bait - there is less factual info on the validity of this

Procure makes great scents! Try the Trophy Bass Super Gel. Don't leave scents in your boat. The bait oils go rancid if they are in the heat constantly.

I know if it's the right scent, you will get more bites. If it's the wrong scent, they will not bite it. One brand may work in one part of the lake/river in, say, crawfish scent. They can leave it alone. I even saw WD-40 work. I have even people use soap for bait. It doesn't make sense

More important is what scents you can’t get a bite on , only water solvable scents can a bass smell ,all other molecules are to large to fit in the o factory canal.but maybe light refracts off oil an that makes it attractive to fish like smelly jelly

This is why BaitFuel is so effective - its currently the only water soluable scent out there ..

I think fish can smell scent like one part to a million look at sharks when blood is in the water so why not other fish it’s there world and I there sensory makeup is outstanding in where we can’t even understand Randy you have made a career in the outdoors in nature’s environment think of all the changes you have seen in behavior of bass in forty years

Bass are so sensitive to their surroundings. It could be the sent of live bait but it think it’s more than that. I think bass pick up of micro movements of live bait.

Love this scent subject. I can say scent is necessary, and does work, and definitely increases your chances of getting bit. No doubt. Myself and my partner were both fishing 1oz football jigs deep in the channel. The exact same jigs. I destroyed him that day. Caught over 30lbs. He got nothing. He was not a happy man at all. The difference was? My jig was smothered in Smelly Jelly(CrawDaddy). He had nothing on his. We absolutely learned something that day. Now the boat is full of smelly jelly. Lol. And I truly believe that putting the smelly jelly on my lure will always give me a way better chance of getting the winning bite or the big bite, as opposed to not putting anything on it at all. It’s just common sense. No brainer. Scent definitely does work. And anyone that throws a non-scented lure is selling it short. That goes for any lure. Bang spray is another good one. Before my lure enters the water, there is definitely scent put on it.
