The Science of Paan

  • Paan is a traditionally auspicious symbol of beginnings. It is also the world’s fourth most commonly consumed psychoactive substance. Have you wondered why a meetha pan is built the way it is? Of course, you must not consume paan regularly since Betel nut is classified as a group 1 carcinogen and is one of the most common causes of oral cancer in India and South East Asia. But did you know that the Betel leaf comes from the same family of vines as Black Pepper? The leaf is a fantastic source of antioxidants and flavonoids and makes for both a lovely garnish and a base for healthier salads and snacks.

When I went to donate blood on my 18th birthday, I was very disappointed because the nurse who checked my blood, refused it as my haemoglobin level was low. I almost started crying because I had waited so long to donate my blood... Then she asked me to come back exactly after a week. And meanwhile I was supposed to eat paan & gulkand twice daily. Just 2 ingredients. Paan & gulkand. Nothing else on the paan. And miraculously, my haemoglobin levels improved so much in just a week!!! 🎉

When I was living in New Zealand, I had a paramour who hung around with his little clique of fellow Indians. A lot of them actually lugged around little sterling silver tins that had all the stuff for making Paan. My paramour didn't use it; his dad had told him it was a dirty habit and he should just use really good liquor instead (bourbon, scotch, whisky, etc.) because it was clean and natural.

there is archaeological evidence that the betel leaves have been chewed along with the areca nut since very ancient times. It is not known when these two different stimulant substances were first put together. Betel leaves are used as a stimulant, an antiseptic, and a breath-freshener, whereas areca nut was considered as aphrodisiac and secret or Indian subcontinent overlay population 🤑
Chewing habits of people have changed over time. The betel leaves are chewed together in a wrapped package along with areca nut and mineral slaked lime. Catechu (kattha) and other flavoring substances and spices were also added subsequently. For many decades, tobacco has also been added to the BL package. The practice of chewing BL has been decreasing progressively and now the Quid comprising of tobacco, areca nut, and slaked lime (gutkha) is generally in practice.

Offering Tamboolam after naivedya is part of pooja and atithi sanskar. However I have not found correct/ancient way of making Tamboolam -it has at least paan leaf, cardamom and cloves as basic ingredients and is suppposed to have fragrant ingredients. I add sounf(fennel seeds), sugar/misri/jaggery piece or raisins and occasionally rose petals .Tastes nice, is good digestive without euphoria . Betel nuts come from a type of Palm tree which did not grow in North India so it's definitely a later introduction.Choona (slaked lime....that white stuff) used in paan these days is highly carcinogenic and I have seen quite a few paan lovers with oral cancer.

You missed out on many things, not enough researched.
    1. Eating Paan is one of the traditions before newly married couples first night as it’s an aphrodisiac
    2. Betel nut/Areca nut although a health warning, is used to cure PTSD because of its calming/numbing effect through micro dosing
    3. From spiritual perspective too, it’s significance needs to be addressed

    Pan also helps in digestion.
Yes, betel leaves can help with digestion. Betel leaves have properties that are carminative, gastro-protective, and anti-flatulent. They can also:
Stimulate the release of saliva, which is the first step of digestion
Promote the release of digestive enzymes, which help break down complex nutrients
Increase metabolism, which improves circulation and stimulates the intestines to absorb vital vitamins and nutrients
Stimulate intestinal digestive enzymes, especially lipase, amylase, and disaccharidases
Sometimes I feel this channel gives a very biased opinion which doesn't present the true picture.
