Embrace the Unknown: From Doodle to Abstract Lighthouse Painting

  • Watch as I embrace the unknown and start with a doodle on a small 6x6 inch canvas panel with no idea where I was heading and end with a simple weathered lighthouse abstract painting.
After taking a break from painting for a week and a half, I longed to pick up the brush and reconnect with my creative spirit. After standing in front of and just staring at a blank canvas this exercise was a way for me to get back into the flow of painting.
For this project, I'll be using a selection of vibrant acrylic paints to start my little unknown adventure. With colors like Cadmium Yellow Medium Hue, Light Olive Green, Cerulean Blue, Winsor Blue, Light Blue Permanent, and Titanium White, I was aiming for a colorful intuitive abstract painting, but found myself drawn to conveying the nostalgic and serene atmosphere surrounding a coastal landmark I saw while on vacation.
As I start working on the canvas panel, I can't help but feel the familiar excitement of making marks and doodling freely. The beauty of abstract painting lies in the freedom it offers, allowing us to express ourselves without the constraints of realism. This particular piece combines the charm of a simple weathered lighthouse with the abstract elements that ignite our imagination.
Throughout this tutorial, I'll guide you through my creative process, sharing tips and techniques to help you overcome artist's block and reignite your passion for painting. Together, we'll explore the interplay between deliberate strokes and spontaneous gestures, finding harmony in the juxtaposition of abstract forms.
So, grab your brushes and paints, and let's embark on this artistic journey together. Join me in this exploration of a simple weathered lighthouse, as we delve into the world of abstract painting. Let's unleash our creativity and rediscover the joy of expressing ourselves on the canvas.
Don't forget to like, subscribe, and hit the bell icon to stay updated on future tutorials and creative adventures. Thank you for joining me today, and I'll see you in the next video!
    Keep on painting!

When I am in a funk, I go back to something that worked in the past. I also look at paintings and search for small parts that I can expand into a new painting.

Hey Irene! That's a wonderful idea about looking at small parts for ideas. I used to do that a lot, but for some reason I haven't done that in a while. I'm going to add that to my "Get out of funk" list so I'll remember. Thanks!

Enjoyed this very much. But then, I enjoy all of your videos, and each helps me in some way. Often when I'm stuck, I tell myself I'm just going to sit down and play, no expectations, or I organize my art stuff, or prep painting surfaces. But this video really resonated with me right now, thanks so much!

Hey, Kathy - thank you so much! We have similar approaches. When I'm stuck I usually end up with a much cleaner and better organized studio with a few more gessoed canvases. More benefits to being stuck.😊

I like to do grid art journaling. I really like Jackie Schomburg. And it's kind of addicting (in a good way.) It's also great for working out color stories.

Thank you for another inspiring video🙏 When I am stuck and think that everything I do is crap, no one likes it, I take a couple of days where I don't paint at all! Sometimes 2 weeks goes by, and then, suddenly I feel the erge to go in to my room where I paint, and then I am on the track again, often with new ideas or other techniques when I paint then before.
Looking forward to more videos from you!

Thanks, Ann! It's interesting to read how each person has their own techniques for getting "unstuck". I've done the same thing and taken some time away. I'm always nervous that the urge to paint won't come back, so I usually push myself back in the studio.🖌️🎨

I really like the background. I take a break by either playing with my foster kittens (two of whom are purring in my paper scraps for collage basket), or moving on to something else I'd like to learn. I'm currently painting pet portraits (and learning how to do so) for a fundraiser for the cat rescue I foster for. It's called "You get what you get" and for $20 donation and a photo of your pet, you may receive one by someone with a fine art background, an amateur (me), or one by a staff volunteer that "can't draw their way out of a paper bag" 🤣🤣
It's helpful. I got my first commission to paint five dogs from a very nice lady who would not take my protestations and told me "I'll waiting until you learn". Custom canvas arriving this week.

Thanks, Becky! That sounds like a wonderful cause to paint for! I literally just walked in the door from taking one of our cats to the vet for a checkup.
I'm sure you will do great!❤️🐾

For when I'm in a funk, but also because I have ADHD and need a variety to keep me stimulated depending on my mood, I have a whole host of projects. I have a number of sketchbooks, handmade art journals created from various papers, playing cards, tags etc to create small designs. I have a whole range from plain paper, to partially started pages.
So ill just pick out a couple of those and either be led by what is on the page, or randomly get some paint or collage bits and just start adding them and see where it leads. 😊

That sounds like a fantastic approach to keeping creativity flowing! ❤️Having a variety of projects and materials on hand is a great way to stay stimulated and inspired. I love the idea of letting the page guide you or starting randomly and seeing where it leads-such a fun and freeing way to create!

Hey Lori! Yes, fantastic images of the lighthouse! Did her fiance take both photos? Loved NC, do you live on the OBX? I went to a nice gallery in Manteo when I was down there called Dare Arts. Check it out sometime if you're near there.

As always you've worked a little gem onto the canvas.i really liked it the background is very ethereal which complements the strong foreground. I'm lucky so far, I haven't suffered from blank canvasitis there's a lot of paintings in my head to come out 😄. Bit when I do, I gesso canvases, then I get my scribble journal and scribble it's sole purpose is just for scribble, then I can focus and the next painting comes forward. Then the hard part is gelling my vision/imagination with my head or with whatever I'm working with. As always I enjoyed your video, thank you. Cheers!

I really loved the early stage of yellow and then at 3.20 mins i thought, there's a readymade abstract landscape! With big clouds. But you kept on going to get out of the funk. I often send my sticky pieces as a photo to my artist friend, and ask him what his eye sees... and unstick myself like that. 😂

    • @chrisloudart

When I feel uninspired, I look at other people painting on TH-cam. Thanks.
Funny thing about the beginning of your painting here, I saw something that, to me, was suggestive of an abstract cat. Of course, I have the advantage of living in the country and having super bad internet, so, the poor video quality helps to abstract things further. Anyway, I went in and started an abstract cat painting before I came back and finished watching your video while my paint dries. Again, thanks.

    • @chrisloudart

Hey Sybil! I'm going to watch the beginning again to see if I can find an abstract cat. Haha...that is a benefit to slow internet that I never thought of. Some people squint their eyes to abstract a piece, but slow internet seems much more effective 😊
