Today I am talking about my own book about an aid station on DDay. Robert Wright and Kenneth More were medics in the 501st Parachute Infantry Battalion and used a 12th Century church to treat upwards of 80 wounded men - American and German on June 6th and 7th.
Because the telephone signal is poor in Angoville and the weather forecast is not good I am using footage taken last week of the church and village. Although the images won't be live, they will be HQ 1080 quality.

The story of Angouville-au-Plain just can't be told enough. Paul told me and my sons in 2003, Dale again in 2004, and today the story is even richer and more compelling. Luckily this episode makes up somewhat for our inability to see the actual church (again or for the first time), for now. One of the best of many humanitarian stories of D-Day.

Thank you so much for this. Even thought this was about the 101st, It was quite difficult to listen to as it brought to life what my grandfather was going through with the 82nd on the same days, with immense fighting and very little bldgs that could be used as Aid stations. La Fiere and Chef du Pont as well as Sainte-Mère-Église (even though they got control of this town fairly quickly) were all going on. The losses to him were unimaginable even though he had been through two jumps in Italy. He told me about the experiences, but it was hard to imagine even though he held nothing back.
I am glad you can highlight the Airborne and what these Divisions accomplished. These divisions got "our boys off the beaches" and helped set up taking Normandy.
    Thank you again.

I am just catching up on older episodes, and this one was... simply fabulous. I was in tears thinking about those two young men thrust into a situation for which they were utterly unprepared, and doing such heroic work. To learn that they had such wrenching regrets in their later years is heart breaking. The story of the young French boy and that of the two young German soldiers encapsulates the horror and the humanity found in every war so very poignantly. Incredible stuff, Paul.

I'm sure Paul meant to thank Hubert Achten for his part in bringing this story to everyone. Hubert's tireless passion for the history, his raising of funds to bring Ken Moore and Bob Wright back to Normandy for the very first time (years before any tour guide had heard of this), and his dedication to the telling and dissemination of this story is what led to it being known today.

Paul, I could listen to you talk for days----this was fantastic!! And I say that as a fan who has read your book, and as I hope you remember, toured Angoville and the DeLauney Farm B&B with you and the incredible Mark Bando----and yet there was still so much for me to enjoy in this presentation. (Of course it does help that my sieve like brain no longer retains lots of the information you and Mark shared on that wonderful tour.) I have always retained the name the DeLauney Farm, but even though we stayed there on that 2009 tour, I did NOT retain the information that that site was, indeed, the DeLauney Farm! I believe Richard had just taken it over then and the name was the something sky or something! I remember walking to Gillis corner with you and seeing the damage done to the stone work at the back of the B&B------but this was a much fuller telling of this incredible story than we got even back then. (You won't remember this, but Mark, and I'm sure he doesn't even know how funny this was, kept referring to the B&B as "the place where we sleep". You probably had to be staying there to know how funny that was----but that is still the name we use to refer to that place! And while watching I was reminded of one of the other incredible sites you and Mark showed us---and perhaps this could be the subject of a future show. Maybe Mark would even be your historian for a trip to the XYZ complex and a telling of the Harrison Summers story. I would absolutely love to have that site interpreted again for me. GREAT work Paul!

A close family friend of ours, Medic Al Mampre of Easy Company, was dear friends of fellow Medic Ed Pepping who was also at the Church assisting and rendering aid. When they were preparing the monument they asked Ed permission to put his name on it. He declined stating the heroics belonged to the other medics not him. A classic example of the humility and resolve of the 101st Airborne and many others of that generation. God Bless them.

I'm just about to read your book "Angels of Mercy" as I have a planned trip to Normandy in August and will be visiting this church.

After watching this episode and reading Paul Woodadge's book I thought this was a great story and really wanted to visit the church. I got that chance on the morning of Sept 7, 2023 when I was able to visit the church. Unfortunately the church was locked up with no signs or information anywhere when it might be open or a point of contact for the church. If anyone else is planning a visit might want to do some research to find out who now controls access to the church.

That's very strange, normally the church is open at 9.00am and closes at 6.00pm

I was there before 9 so that's on me, but I had never seen any hours posted for the church. Regardless I'm still glad I was able to go there.

    Excellent video Paul.
I visited Angoville-au-plain last week prior to watching this video or knowing much about the church other than it had been used as an aid station. I had very strange experience within 1-2 minutes of being inside the church - almost like a feeling of intense claustrophobia - I couldn't stay in there and left with a headache that lasted for 30+ minutes.
After this experience I've been trying to learn as much as I can about the place.

@@WW2TV I subscribed a while ago and have been thoroughly enjoying your videos.
I have a channel dedicated to watches and while in Normandy last week I shot a lot of content for an upcoming video on Tom Rice and "the lost watch of D-Day"

Thanks, Paul for sharing your passion for your work and the people and stories that are so compelling and instructive about the human spirit. Agree 100% that the modern day physician should have thought twice before speaking and simply said something like "you did all you could." The "lucid interval" he no doubt was referring to suggests central nervous system injury that could only be effectively addressed urgently by a neurosurgical team. Care not remotely available on D-day and even if a "neurosurgeon" was in the next village over, the prognosis would be poor given the limitations of the era. The physician was myopic and likely thinking within the context of present day scenarios where level 1 trauma center care is taken for granted in the West. I'm sorry that this insensitive remark added to Bob's burden before he passed.

Heavy show, a good one, but heavy because of the personal stories. Especially the story of the little boy, Paul Langeard 😪

Not the only Aide Station during the war where a mortar came through the roof of a church without detanating. It's a GOD thing. Never doubt it!

Thanks for comment. As an atheist I would disagree and I could cite many cases of churches full of innocent victims where the bombs did detonate and many were killed, but i say that in the spirit of friendship and objectivity
