  • Today we're repairing a Williams Algar with missing digits in the player 2 and four displays. We'll talk about how to identify problem IC's and how to replace them.
Below is a link to the soldering/desoldering station I mentioned in the video. It's available on Amazon sometimes as well. The desoldering gun requires regular cleaning and maintenance, but it works well if you take care of it:

Great work here! I need a scope that size - handy for diagnostics with the boards mounted in the game

London Pinball, When the driver boards used Triacs/SCRs they add a resistor across to each lamp socket to reduce the flickering. The Resistors value added across the lamp socket changes the on/off timing ratio of the Triac/SCR? What Resistor value do you normally use to reduce the flicker issue? I had no idea that place a Resistor in parallel with each Triac/SCR driver on the lamps driver boards would change the on/off timing to the lamp sockets. Old EM games that used 24VAC had Jet Bumper Coils. EM games that used 48VDC didn't use Jet Bumper Coils to turn on/off the Bumper switches, any reasons why? Some EM games have a "Control bank Reset Coil" and other EM games doesn't have a Control bank reset coil, any reasons why or how does the EM game resets when you first turn on the EM game to reset if it doesn't have a control bank reset coil?

Thanks for making this and your words of encouragement at the end. I am also new at this and trying to learn. This seems silly but what do they mean by "strobe" Is that the whole digit? Or parts of it , or something else? Thanks

It's my understanding that strobe refers to a data signal of some sort. Depending on the manufacturer and where the data gets processed, this can mean a digit or a segment or a collection of information. In the case of Williams, I think it just refers to the information that the displays are supposed to show. The master display is the device that processes and distributes the information (aka strobes) that it receives from the MPU and outputs "strobes" to the displays where it's actually output in the form of a number on the display itself. And it's called a strobe because it's literally constantly providing this information several times a second, like a strobe light? Sure, why not?

When replacing electronic parts you have to decide which part is sacrificial. Very rarely do you want to save the board and the chip. Really cheap parts aren't worth saving so even if the $0.75 chip turns out to be good the board is more important.

What electronics store did you buy that chip at?

@@londonpinball Traced my problem back to the 6184 chip. This was after I swapped the glass from a slave into the the master unit and it still didn't work. 6184 chips are almost impossible to get now.
