Which do you think is better to cover grey? this or Schwartqaf (sorry if i spelled that wrong). I, for a while had a good stylist that could blend non coverable grey with blond highlights, but keep it a rich dark brown below, but of course, she went away and noone else seems to be able to get it right and the mistakes make me not want to give them more chances. I don't have a huge budget, and while manic panic is non damaging, I don't feel like wild colors right now. Anyway, I want a good color that lasts a bit on that grey, and the rest is naturally a mix of mostly brown with a little brown and blond. When most people highlight, it ends up orange and the grey still stands out, so I don't know what magic she did, but even if I learn stuff online, stylists have a tendency to not listen to me and tell me everything I learn online is just several words for the exact same thing. (like highlights/lowlights or balayage). And then they do something that is nothing like what I asked for, so if this E salon or Schwartcof is pretty good, even tho I have no energy to do it, it may be more worth it to do at home. I don't mind being grey or white or whatever it is, but my initial intention was for a gradual changeover because my sudden aging after an illness was too much to take. That one stylist totally got it and did magic, but then moved away. I was able to go almost 6 months between touch ups. I can only go for a few weeks with anyone else. But I leave it because i just have to save up for something like that. Any advice for my personal sitution would be so helpful. thankyou so much for your videos!! You and free salon education and a newer guy, justin hickox are the only ones online that give truly helpful, worthwhile info, that I have found. Many blessings and I pray you guys are safe and stay healthy and well supplied. i am nearly always stuck at home, not just right now, and the helpful info you give is truly a blessing!!
It’s lockdown 3 in Ireland & UK for 3 months! My grey is hideous, thank you Sylvia for the amazing technique on how to do roots and leave the blonde balayage. My hairdresser told me the Loreal Inoa shade so I’ll buy it and try 🙏
Well, my girlfriend made me do this. And I really messed it up despite watching your video. I am a Butcher by trade, don't know why she thought I'd be able to pull this off LOL oh well. At least while she's crying upstairs I can have some free time in the garage.
I used esalon and while washing it out, even after i used water to massage my hair, I had major build up that only came out after 10 washes and finally using baking soda to get the rest of the waxy substance.
This is probably a silly question, but I don’t see the answer anywhere: how do you wash your hair after applying the root color without it touching the blonde highlights? Does it matter if when I clear the root color the water touches my highlights? My highlights are very blonde and I’m SO afraid it’ll get dark when I wash the roots!
I was in the exact same situation but I followed her video on babylights. I mixed it with Brad Mondo’s method and it turned out great. I think you can definitely do it at home
Thank you for this video. I just touched up my roots for the first time and I used eSalon per your recommendation and I am totally in love ❤❤❤❤. Thank you again 😘.
I wish if you could make a video on how you choose your color on esalon, please can you make a video on how you place your order, answer the questions and pick a shade.thank you. So I can just have an idea, I know we all have a different color but just to guide ourselves.
Idk if this might be helpful to you my hairdresser told me how to do my hair, which is very blonde but it might also apply to you. She uses majirel by l'oreal, you can order it on amazon look at the color chart for the color you want and then use a developer (20 vol for lifting two tones and 30 for lifting 3 tones). It is a 2:1 ratio. Then just do it from the bottom to the top of the roots. Again, idk if that's helpful to you but it has worked out for me with majirel high lift 1/2 beige + 1/2 neutral with the 30 vol developer.
It depends on what your natural color is. A high lift color might do it but if you super dark you may need bleach. Hilift is great but has limits. Loreal has some good choices, I've used that to go vibrant red and it didn't ravage my hair.
Soooooo to cover gray roots and it is actually growing through gray - am I using demi or perm color for roots, plus how the heck do I prevent it from running through my blonde??
I would like to add darker roots to my bleached hair, but don’t want it to bleed into the blonde too much. What is the best way to do this. I am SO HAPPY I FOUND YOUR TH-cam VIDEOS!!!
Sectioning your hair like this when you have wavy/curly hair is a nightmare. I just usually go from bottom to top in horizontal sections, otherwise there is no chance to get everywhere 😆 Great video 👍🏻
Actually you can straighten your hair first then do your color. It’s way easier that way. If I know I’m going to color my hair, I’ll straighten it the day before. I actually start in the back working from the bottom up in horizontal sections. Then I do the front. I separate the back into two sections one on the left and one on the right and do one side at a time so I know I’m not missing anything. I’m also a licensed cosmetologist and I do my own color at home because it’s easier for me and more convenient.
Hi Elle! I am seeking your advice. So I tried to mix equal parts permanent dye in shade 8N with 10 volume (tried to make it 1.5 to 1.5 ounces) and applied it to my roots for a root tap. Anyway, this colour did not lift/lighten the colour of my dark roots (but did cover some of my greys coming in at least), so i am thinking in 4 weeks I will try a lighter shade - 9N for the root tap and/or try putting in some babylights, particularly around the front of my face to lighten things up. Anyway, my question for you is that when I did the root tape with 8N perm dye I got some it unfortunately on a couple small strands the none-root part (so the blonde stuff) and it turned it a bit purple. This happened on a small amount of strands near the front of my face. I am wondering what you would recommend to correct this issue. Should I just try highlighting those strands with bleach mixed with 20 developer? Please advise. Thank you! Loved your video on how to cut your own hair and also the video on how to cut your man's hair. I followed along to both of those and the end products were a success!! :)
I think some people are expecting your roots to change color LOL... She is just covering grays the SAME color & maintaining a darker root. GEEEEZ people!!!! Pretty as always Silvia=) I LOVE your necklace- Who is the designer or where can I get it??
It looks the same I am so confused can you do a video on how we can achieve the same blonde on your roots with products from Sally’s or something if that’s possible
This video is to show application technique and show coverage and even saturation. And for me to cover my grays! I'm not actually trying to change my root color but to match my base so it’s not meant to look particularly different, just touched up. reason I don't want to do this using Sally's products is because you'll most likely need a different color than me, and by using eSalon's custom color, you'll get the color right. Hope this helps you too!
I use it also its really nice everything you need. The only thing i dont like is there shampoo I'll use it to rinse the color out but I'll use my own shampoo. If you havent tried this you should.
Thank you thank you! I don't know if I have the courage to do this...concerned it'd turn out terribly. Hair has 2 shades of blonde & ash blonde @ the roots. My root color has grown out about 2 1/2 inches, so not looking so great right now.
I just got my esalon today going to try it tonight hope it turns out :) I only bought it because I need my hair done and you recommend it so I got my fingers crossed 🤞
Question. I have balayage and baby lights. I just need to touch my roots in between color appointments. When I rinse out my root color how do you prevent it from getting on your current highlights
Hi, I’ve been following you for the longest time and definitely find you to be the easiest to understand and most relatable. Question: I’ve asked my colorist here in Philly if I can touch up my roots and her response was “I don’t touch your base when we do highlight so I’m afraid you doing that would warm you up too much”. Can you tell me what that means? For reference, I get a cool icy blonde highlight. Thanks and keep posting great content!
I think because when you get highlights you are only getting a small percentage of your hair lightened (hence why foils are typically used, to avoid lightening the other sections) whereas the rest of your hair is left with your natural colour - that is your base. If you were to lighten your roots yourself they wouldn't be highlighted, all of the hair would be lightened so instead of having dark roots they would be entirely blonde. It can also be quite difficult to get that icy tone in blonde hair so maybe she is saying you won't be able to achieve the shade yourself from home?
Love it. I am planning to follow your tutorial tomorrow. I bought my colors for the first time at Sally. My roots are 5,5 months old, and I want to give my hair some shine and color the grays. I have a high hopes. We shall see. I love your videos. New subscriber here.
U make it look so easy... I did the ESalon and boy it looks black - how do you get it to not run through your hair when rinsing off??? hilities tomorrow.... say a prayer...
Would you do a chat on your thoughts about hair extensions? I have been on the fence for years. I hear mixed reviews about damaging your hair no matter what kind you get. I have fine hair with blond highlights and Not quite shoulder length Lob style. I get microtrims but, my hair just doesn't grow fast enough. I've been stuck at the same length forever 😐
Hairdressers run all through my family. My mom, my sister an aunt. Mom and my sister are retired. I do have a hairdresser. Thank goodness I got my hair done before all this went down. But my roots are aleady shown. I need to learn to do my roots. Looks pretty easy. 🙂
I'm so confused. How is that COLORING ROOTS when the color didn't change at all? If Sylvia's natural hair colour is brunette (looks like level 5?) with some grey hairs, shouldn't she use some kind of bleach to brighten it first? And then tone it to end up with more ashy blonde? I don't understand the process. I even opened the video in two windows - side by side - to compare the before and after and the only difference is that "the after" (where Sylvia is wearing a denim jacket) is clean, freshly styled hair while "the before" (where she's wearing a black shirt) shows dirtier messier hair. What am I missing? And, yes, I know she explained in the comments that "this video is to show application technique and show coverage and even saturation" but how can we see even saturation when the color isn't changed at all? In that case it might just show the application of any product like conditioner and the result would be the same. The title is so misleading. I've never been so confused by a YT video...
Like I honeslty think she used a developer all by itself or a cream hand lotion and then went and touched up the front a slight bit on her own using a different product. 🤔
If that's the case, why is the video called "COLOR your roots"? Why not call it "a proper application technique for roots"? And what's the purpose of ordering eSalon's COLOR KIT (which they specifically customized for Sylvia) if there is no color change? So so so confusing.
@@amraw4838 idk I didnt post the video. I wouldn't assume anything other than application but I guess I can see where clients are coming from... but also we've been in school for over 1600 hours for this so it's not always black and white
Am Raw she was covering up her grays. That is a color change (from gray to a shade that matches her natural brown roots), it’s just one that didn’t pick up well on camera since she didn’t zoom is close enough to really peep at her grays. I’m sure this kind of video is helpful for lots of women who regularly dye their hair to cover their grays but can’t get to a salon right now.
Just curious about esalon- you said it does say what color you are getting on the paper you showed. Do you mean just that its permanent color, demi-perm. color, etc or does it say the actual level and tone?
Hey girl thanks for your tutorial 💕🤍 really you look amazing i watch many of your videos..🤩 i have a question plz answer me 😘 i need to do hair color for the roots n greys but also need to bring my highlights up n tap on it too( balayage it) .. which step is first roots coloring or highlights ? Thanks 🙏🏻 I
Love your videos. Been following your tips for 2 yrs... I get so many compliments on my blonde tones. Can you recommend a pair of shears? I want to start to do a basic at home trim- thanks.
I just dyed my hair with dark golden blonde box dye and it came out orangey tinted and I’m scared to do anything but I don’t want the orange tint... any ideas?! Please halp this quarantine has a sister tweeking ❤️🥺
Kimba 333 🙏 I’m just not sure if I should try and lighten it more and then tone or try and tone it as it is now since it’s still pretty darkish still (I’m a dark brunette)
If you just want to get rid of the orangey tint but don't want to go any blonder then buy 7.1 or 8.1 (medium or dark ash blonde) from any brand and it will tone down the orange pigments in your hair. Try Clairol 8A if you wanna take out the brass but don't expect your hair to be any lighter! If you don't want to dye your hair again then opt for a purple shampoo (John Frieda Intense purple shampoo works for a lot of people, just leave it on for at least 5 mins). If you wanna go lighter you have to pre-lighten your hair (with bleach or ultralift) which I don't recommend during lockdown as the resources are quite limited. Hope I could help!
Susie Ladnai thank you so much!! ❤️ the medium or dark ash hair dye won’t give an ash blonde but just tone out the orange right? I’m trying for a golden tone instead of ash since my skin tone is pretty olive

I was asking to myself as well how is it she has no stains on her blonde hair even she touched them with gloves..but when you watching carefully she has some spots on but it cant be seen at the end
Here’s a tip that I do.... I put conditioner on all the rest of my hair. That way color won’t deposit on the blonde. Works for me😊 plus my hair gets a nice deep conditioning treatment. It’s a win win!
Tammy Metcalfe you are correct; great tip. I even do this before I see my stylist. I run a ton of conditioner on the blond portion even when I’m just touching up highlights. When she shampoos/rinses my hair the conditioner repels the new color. Less damaging to the ends.
Hi Ellie, brilliant tutorial, we are all so desperate to sort our roots! Can I just check, is this product essentially a toner (like weller) with a developer? I have these at home to try this weekend so after seeing you use it I am happy to have a go. Would use the esalon you recommended next time though. Thanks xx

I have heard from my hairdresser that you can wrap pieces of your blond hair in tin foil (as if you had applied blond to it) while you are washing out the dark root color to protect it from the dark
Sort of off topic, but I can't seem to find hair color that's direct dye only that's in the brown family. I only see fashion colors in the direct dye. Do browns only come in demi-permanent and permanent? TIA!
Hi! nice video! Sorry for all the wrong technical terms that are about to follow! In order not to see my greys, which usually start appearing after 2 weeks I dye my hair, my stylist made my color a brighter than my natural ash-blonde. Now that I've been trying to paint the hair by myself, the result is quite darker than I would like (using the same color!!). I also tend to paint a bit more than just the root - I cannot help it, I'm really bad at the job!! The hair tents to become brighter after a 5-6 times I wash it. Apparently, I am using the correct analogy of oxygene&color, could it be that I am too slow in applying the color, and I should leave the paint for 25 min instead of 30? Thanks!!!!!!!
I've heard before that where the root touchups overlap a little with the older color there can be a faint line that was not intended. Also, I've heard that the heat from your head can make the color develop differently than the sections further down and that is a reason to not wait too long between touchups. I've never done this before so I'm not sure if that's true, any thoughts?
Body heat is only and issue when using bleach not when you’re depositing colour because a shade can’t change as in light brown can only be light brown no matter how long it’s on the hair,

I had to watch this for my mum.I literally had no idea how to root her hair thank you for making this video
video starts at 3:50
Well, my girlfriend made me do this.
I need to know a diy at home balayage touch up. My blonde is halfway down my head now and i need to refresh and lighten up my ends again. 🙏🏻
Lauren Dalton, she has a video (or two) about this on her TH-cam channel 💕
I was in the exact same situation but I followed her video on babylights. I mixed it with Brad Mondo’s method and it turned out great. I think you can definitely do it at home
Thank you for this video. I just touched up my roots for the first time and I used eSalon per your recommendation and I am totally in love ❤❤❤❤. Thank you again 😘.
I wish if you could make a video on how you choose your color on esalon, please can you make a video on how you place your order, answer the questions and pick a shade.thank you. So I can just have an idea, I know we all have a different color but just to guide ourselves.
After your root application, did you put anything on the rest of your hair? ex. Toner, ect?
Thanks Sylvia.
Real helpful but wished you showed how you sectioned and did the back. A view from behind would help. Thanks!
Do you have any videos on lightening the roots to ash brown without bleach?
I just usually go from bottom to top in horizontal sections, otherwise there is no chance to get everywhere 😆
Great video 👍🏻
you should try doing it on wet hair!
Beautiful what color do you use ???
Thanks for the video! But the ends are getting the root colour when I wash. Any suggestion to prevent that issue??
It looks great! What color root touch-up did you use?!
Hope this helps you too!
m b I use Wella and the ion sensitive scalp developer from Sally’s my own hair dresser says that Wella is a good brand to use. (:
yes, that's what I was wondering.
I use it also its really nice everything you need. The only thing i dont like is there shampoo I'll use it to rinse the color out but I'll use my own shampoo. If you havent tried this you should.
It is $10 if you use the link and only if you sign up for recurring shipments. If you do a one time purchase it is $22. For those that are confused.
Thank you thank you! I don't know if I have the courage to do this...concerned it'd turn out terribly. Hair has 2 shades of blonde & ash blonde @ the roots. My root color has grown out about 2 1/2 inches, so not looking so great right now.
thanks to you i dye my root successfully at home followed your instructions and not having hair dye to my scalp. 😍😍
When you washed out the root coloring, how did you protect the bottom of your hair do not ruin those beautiful highlights?
I just got my esalon today going to try it tonight hope it turns out :) I only bought it because I need my hair done and you recommend it so I got my fingers crossed 🤞
I used it and was super excited. My hair turned orange. Followed the directions to a T and ordered COOL Blonde Beige.
Question. I have balayage and baby lights. I just need to touch my roots in between color appointments. When I rinse out my root color how do you prevent it from getting on your current highlights
I followed your baby lights tutorial and it went perfectly! Thankyou 💕
Easy to do baby lights? I want to try that soon
How it didn’t effect the highlights when you rinse down the dark color over??
It can also be quite difficult to get that icy tone in blonde hair so maybe she is saying you won't be able to achieve the shade yourself from home?
basically this method isn't going to work for highlights, only for colouring your entire root area / whole head
There is no visual difference.
Great 👍 thank you I’ve just got my esalon root pack so glad you are doing this . 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 my hair is short though never see videos on short hair .
I’m in the uk do you do consulting on Instagram? I’ve just followed you x
Karriepink Mollinator Makes Me Smile I was charged $22.
Love it. I am planning to follow your tutorial tomorrow. I bought my colors for the first time at Sally. My roots are 5,5 months old, and I want to give my hair some shine and color the grays. I have a high hopes. We shall see. I love your videos. New subscriber here.
Would you tell me please wich number of color is?? I like that root color for me too.
aixuri Mood I would also like to know that color. Thanks
@ellebangs what color do u use ?
They wouldn’t let me go lighter with that kit. There was no option for brightening or coloring bleached section. Did I miss something?
Pastor Madeline The bleaches section would be considered another color. You would need to do two colors, on for the bleached and one for the roots.
Typically with hair dye you can only lift 1-2 shades of your natural (root) color. Bleached sections can be refreshed with colored shampoos or toners.
Thanks for the link! I can't wait for the kit to arrive.
How do you keep the dark root color from bleeding into the blonde?
You make everything look so easy!
U make it look so easy... I did the ESalon and boy it looks black - how do you get it to not run through your hair when rinsing off??? hilities tomorrow.... say a prayer...
Thanks, just touched up my roots today after seeing your video....and not doing it myself in.....forever. It worked great! Thanks
Would you please do a demonstration on how to cut shorter layers than on long hair like yours? Thanks!
Thankyou so much, this is super helpful.
Nice method of separating your hair with the handle of the comb.
Worked for me! Hurray!
I can see it - clearly it’s a warmer color plus she was covering grays.
Am Raw she covered her greys only and did some touch up to her natural hair and you can see how her roots look smother and blending with highlights.
Like I honeslty think she used a developer all by itself or a cream hand lotion and then went and touched up the front a slight bit on her own using a different product. 🤔
Where did you get your denim jacket? I love the color and distressing and can’t find one like this
Thank you Elle! Just place my order for my color..I really like that it's personalized for you.
Joei Zaragoza Root shadow it on wet hair :-) you will be amazed at the blend! Plus it does looks much natural
Omg as a hairstylist I'm annoyed with some of these comments. This video is to show the technique! Not to show results of your new color.
Yeah, she's covering her grey roots people, it's not that confusing!
I looked at the hair at the beginning and the end and cannot tell any difference?
Just curious about esalon- you said it does say what color you are getting on the paper you showed. Do you mean just that its permanent color, demi-perm. color, etc or does it say the actual level and tone?
Impressive how much the hair dye matched your root color! Great video! Very helpful! I definitely need to try this company.💛
I just love your hair colour!! 💗
Just a advert for a product that clearly you’ve been paid to endorse and seemingly doesn’t work given end result. Great work love
Why did you not show how to section off and color the back?
Hey girl thanks for your tutorial 💕🤍 really you look amazing i watch many of your videos..🤩 i have a question plz answer me 😘 i need to do hair color for the roots n greys but also need to bring my highlights up n tap on it too( balayage it) .. which step is first roots coloring or highlights ? Thanks 🙏🏻 I
what i needed was to see how I can do the back sections.. you did show some of it but not in the detail you showed the front. thanks
Love your videos. Been following your tips for 2 yrs... I get so many compliments on my blonde tones. Can you recommend a pair of shears? I want to start to do a basic at home trim- thanks.
Question. Will the brown color change the blonde as you rinse?
I just dyed my hair with dark golden blonde box dye and it came out orangey tinted and I’m scared to do anything but I don’t want the orange tint... any ideas?! Please halp this quarantine has a sister tweeking ❤️🥺
sandswanch see if you can find a toner at the esalon she got hers from. The orange should come out. Good luck
Hi Elle, how did you wash your hair that didn't ruin your balayage. I am scared that washing out my color will ruin my highlights
Awesome. I live on the central coast. I enjoy your channel. But unfortunately I do not live close by. My daughter is 6 months pregnant and she is on social restrictions due to her being at higher risk. I tried to highlight her hair, she had not had it done in 6 months and she normally has it done. She purchased a box color what a mistake it’s orange and brassy. We will text you for a consultation. So we can get this fixed. I hope we can we need your help. Thank you 🙏.
Elle I’m wondering if you what you were trying to do was more of a shadow root rather than an actual blonde cover all over color?
So easy!..... Not waiting till lockdown, going to buy colour this week its 40 %off... Thank you 👍😘
This video was the highligth of my week. Thank you so much. It would be nice to know, which color formular you would have used to mix. Because now I don´t have the time to order and only the salon products at home....
I love the color of your hair!
Love your videos Could you tell me why when i put a level 7 or 8 ash to cover too yellow highlights it wont cover just looks gold ... so frustrated I am a level 7ish medium ash blonde natural with too thick yellow highlights and trying to cover some up Any help would be much appreciated I have a cupboard of products and no results
The way you're flipping your hair around, how do you *not* stain your blonde with the brown color? This happens to me every now & then..
Me too! Even rinsing it out stains and dulls my blonde highlights.
I was going to ask the same
I was asking to myself as well how is it she has no stains on her blonde hair even she touched them with gloves..but when you watching carefully she has some spots on but it cant be seen at the end
Thanks xx
Toner is a name for demi-permanent hair colour which this is so yes x
I want the black roots look with my died gray hair..but cant seem to part it right to get my scalp to look naturally grown in if u get what i mean? I want a balage i guess my hair grows in brown i like dark roots blending into my purposely grey hair ..any tips or video on doing this myself or parts
How can I keep the dark base color from making my blonde color darker when I rinse it out. It always comes out darker. Please help 🙏👍❤️
I have heard from my hairdresser that you can wrap pieces of your blond hair in tin foil (as if you had applied blond to it) while you are washing out the dark root color to protect it from the dark
Would love to see another video how to do balayaga to your hair
Rita Merrill I’d love an answer on this because I’m way grown out and just ordered my kit!
Body heat is only and issue when using bleach not when you’re depositing colour because a shade can’t change as in light brown can only be light brown no matter how long it’s on the hair,
I don't know if you have Sally Hansen in your area. They have everything you need at a good price and the girls will help you with the color.
