Wayne, I have seen that you have commented on a couple women's videos saying how beautiful they are! That is such a beautiful quality - to see beauty everywhere. Thank you, on behalf of all women! And I agree, Nadine, you are so beautiful and fun and funny!
:-) I’m a hairdresser. Not looking awayyyy! ;-) You did a great job. The way I look at it, when someone wants to color their own hair, I’d rather give them proper instructions and suggestions of good products than make arguments for why they need a pro (me) to do it. Have gained and retained many clients by doing that...they still need haircuts, blowouts, and have family members and friends they will recommend. ANYway, Matrix color is my favorite and most effective and Ive used them ALL over the years. If you are covering gray hair however, try the 500 series of Socolor. It’s just like what you are using, called 508N and is double pigmented to better cover gray and last longer.
Oh, I wish I had seen this before I did my own last week. I have now turned copper, the greys still show through and I missed whole sections!! How did you not get a drop of dye on your face or neck line? I made such a mess. Great video. Thank you.
Hi Nadine, thank you so much for doing this video and showing your greys to the world. I’ve recently gone from having 20-30% greys to about 70% in a very short period of time due to some hormonal changes, so I can relate to having to colour my roots every 2-3 weeks. I have done so for years, as my first grey strand made an appearance at 11 years old - I’m 30 now. I usually resort to a spray from Charles Worthington or the Color Wow powder to conceal during my last week, as my hair grows so fast.
I love this. It’s good to be brave. I bleach my hair and have been doing so for 12 years since I lost my hair through Chemo. I used to be brunette. I’d love to go to a colour like you, light but not platinum blonde as I am now. I’ve spoken to my stylist but she insists I get her to do it at considerable expense, every 2 to 3 weeks. You are inspiring me to have a go at changing my colour myself. I know about block colouring first so my hair doesn’t turn green. But I’m nervous too. I just love how your hair looked after colouring it. Live life! Thanks Nadine. Xxx
This is the best do it yourself tutorial I’ve seen in a long time. Brilliant with the loose ponytail. All these years experimenting, how did I miss that trick.
I love that you're doing this yourself. With all the access you have to the top people in beauty not only are you doing hair color and cutting at home but you don't mind showing us that you're a real person. I get such a kick out of watching you and get great information, too. My biggest home hair color goof was back in the "frosted" highlight days where specific hairs were pulled with a crochet hook through small holes on a tight cap that fit snugly on your head. Then you applied a bleaching toner on the exposed hair. I had done this several times but one time I decided to multitask and do some cleaning while the product worked. I wrapped my head in plastic wrap so as not to drip on anything. At the specified time I washed it out but because of the body heat I generated it over lightened and my "highlights" were dry, brittle white hairs. Hahaha!
Fabulous! Thanks for being so brave and transparent and sharing such personal, and useful information! A grown-up doing grown-up hair... No bleach or toner, just a refresh of base color. I have dyed my own, not always with success, because I haven't been consistent with product. I think consistency of product is key, and I do like you, when it starts to look obviously unprofessional, I see a professional 😉. You are gorgeous! Your hair looks gorgeous! I don't think you need any color correcting at all! Thank you for such a useful video!! As far as I'm concerned, this is now the gold standard video on TH-cam about how to do an at-home touch up. 👏 😘
Thanks Nadine, I'm just starting to home colour as can't afford to go to hairdresser every 3 weeks to get grey coloured and these are much appreciated tips! Your a star
So much respect for you Nadine. Honest, open, refreshing. I’ve been colouring and trimming my own hair for the last 5 years. Fine hair base 8 also, although I mix three different 8s for my tone as advised by my tony and Guy colourist friend as it goes brassy really easily, but some straight 8 helps cover greys better. Great video, this is what women want.
Love your tips and tricks. You are the one person I can always come back and see. I love that you are real and aren't one dimensional. Your experience is refreshing for those of us that aren't in the 20-30 crowd. I've been doing my roots and color for years. My mom is a hair dresser so I learned it from her. Pony tail trick is brilliant. Now do I go back to my colorist or try your tips and tricks....
Great video! You're right about using the proper tools, it really makes a difference! The only tip I'd add is to do an allergy patch test, always a good idea just in case you have a reaction to the dye or developer. I'm naturally very dark ash brown (Eastern European heritage), 75% gray but when dying (mostly at the crown), I've always lightened (1/2 shade lighter) and added warmth (golden/red). At 52, if I matched my base color, it would be really harsh-looking; my features are naturally sharp/angular and as we age, our faces lose depth and and that youthful glow. Going a touch lighter and warmer adds brightness back to my features and warms my skin tone. At some point, I may stop dying but not ready for that yet.
I'm doing this today (lockdown). Great video to help. I'm dark so should be able to manage now I know how. Your hair looks great. Very multi-tonal, very very natural.
Thank you Nadine for demystifying this for us...YES!! You are definitely right to have told us about this..I've been using the splashy hair dye to do my roots for years and will now equip myself properly...NO, you are not taking work away from the professional colourist because I've been doing my roots myself for years. Now I can do them properly..big thank you to you..you're great!
This was the best DIY tutorial I have seen! 👏 I also have to say that this was the most glamorous root colouring tutorial too! Haha 😂 Well done Nadine!! You did a faboulous job! 😊👌💕
I am so glad you made this video, so many people can't afford or have the time for a salon colour that they do it at home, I have trained my husband to do my hi-lights using a Magicap and two different box shades, it works really well. I started when the salon bill got to nearly £100. Any tips that help us create a good look at home are most welcome and Bravo for doing your on screen.
@@kostasfilos5472 It is much harder to do on your own, I tried several times but failed as I couldn't do the back and it was taking me ages. get a friend to help and you can then hold the cap firmly pulled down in place while they hook your hair out. Best if they start at the crown and top of head and work down. Good Luck.
You were totally right to do this video! 😊 very good demonstration and open and honest about those pesky greys! I’m so the same but dark and am exactly in your camp of at home root treatment! Who has the time and money to spend in a salon every three weeks 🤷🏻♀️ Thanks Nadine 😘xx
So helpful thanks to you I am now totally loving and obsessed with colouring my hair at home it’s so inexpensive and becoming more confident so yeah thanks so much
I colour my roots all the time - so much more cost effective! I then leave my hair stylist to do the highlights and low lights (every 6 months). Like you I've found that as the root colour fades out it blends quite nicely with the blonder bottom. My hair is quite a bit longer than yours and so I often get my husband to do it for me.
Nadine, thank you! Depending how long this quarantine goes on, I may be doing this. I would have never thought to ask my hairdresser for my base color number, thank you! You made it look easy!
Hi Nadine, just about to go into the sixth week of lockdown and my wife was desperate to have her hair coloured - get rid of the grey! She asked if I would do it ( I’m a piano tuner!) She’d bought all the stuff, I watched your video & wasn’t sure if I would mess it up. Just went for it - it’s turned great! Thank you so much. Maybe start a sideline!
I don't know how anyone is supposed to get the results they are looking for from a box or even DIY'ing at home from beauty supply products! Your hair turned out beautiful, and I am amazed at your results Nadine! Just looking at 8N in google images, there is such a wide discrepancy of color swatches from all the different brands! 8N appears to be anything from light ash blonde to strawberry blonde!!! I am a stylists daughter and grew up in salons all my life!!! I was a brownish red that became completely ombre naturally in summer sun or holiday, with the palest strawberry ends. I still cannot figure out how to color my roots similar to my original virgin color without going completely orange! The parting is now white mixed with drab, no trace of red at all! Hats off to you!!! 😘💗🙏🌺
At last, thanks to you Nadine, I may finally have the courage to try my own root cover-up. I simply don't have the time or budget to get my roots colored every 3 weeks and home color is the only other option. Thank you for your tutorial and for helping me see that a root touch-up at home is not rock science. I will ask my colorist for my base color and give it a shot, starting with a small section to get my confidence. You're the best!!!!
You're the best! This may be my favorite video of yours. I didn't know you could buy redken products online if you didn't have a hairdresser's license. I can't wait to try your technique. Just can't see spending $80 to cover my white roots. Thank you for this.
I was doing my hair by myself for years. Now I'm going to hairdresser, however I'm tempted.... Plus - it's only hair ;) It will grow back :) that's my philosophy ;) I'm glad that you've done it :)
Thank you so much! I have been doing my own color for about 20 years in between professional colorings and could never do my "parting" very well. You make it look super easy and foolproof so I will definitely be giving it a try. Great video!
Absolutely Fab 🥰 I have just done it myself with L’Oréal Majirel 6 and it has turned out amazing!! My sister is a hairdresser and she usually does it for me but now i can do it myself thanks to your great tips 😊 great tutorial x
Bravo ! I use to go get my greys covered every 2 to 3 weeks and now I touch up my roots. I still go to my colorist but only every few months for highlights. I love not having to worry about making such frequent appointments and can do my hair at my own leisure. I don’t understand why so many women are so afraid to color their hair ! Thanks so much for this great video !,
Thank you so much for making this video. Its not something I have ever considered before but with your support I might give it a go. Thank you for all your great content and for being an honest voice. We need more people like you 💛
During the coronavirus, I'm thinking I will have to do my own roots for the first time in my life as I will miss an appointment. I know my color and will give it a try. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I have always colored my hair myself, used to color it for fun, but now for the grays. The loose pony tail trick is very helpful, I also have most of my grays on the top... and the side burns are super stubborn! They only hold on to the hair color for maybe 2 weeks... then I start seeing my "highlights". 😑
Nadine, this video is BRILLIANT!! Thank you so much for your transparency and sharing such a personal moment to help us make our lives better. So, grateful that you gave us the links for tools to make it look more professional and easier. You are an absolutely gorgeous woman inside and out! I always feel like I'm hanging with a best friend when I watch your videos. You are my go to person for all things, beauty...you're a QUEEN 👑💎⭐️😘💛🌹
Thank you so much. I am in USA, California. This will be my first time doing touch up only (usually all over, disaster). You are the only one that showed how to do the back! Thank you! Going to do right now! 🥰
You did it better than some professionals!♥ I do my own hair as well at home. Don't want to pay a ridiculous amount of money for something that I can easily do at home. All it takes is some research and there's plenty of information out there. You did amazing♥
Thank you so much for this tutorial, it's just what I was looking for. I've colored my own hair for years but always all of it at once and am never pleased with the color until about 4-6 weeks later. You did an excellent job of coloring your roots and explaining how. I'm trying it today. Thanks also for the links.
It looks great! My base color is very dark brown and pulls warm so I have to use an ash. But the one good thing is, as you mentioned, greys give you natural highlights. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge.
I think it’s a great video. I am 35 and have dark brown hair, I have a lot of grey at the front of my hair that shows every 2 weeks. I would never have the time or the funds to go to the hairdresser every 2 weeks to get my roots done so I do the same!
Truly appreciate your honesty as not many would do this Nadine. It is brave of you to show us what you do and that is why I respect you. You are not fake like SO SO many to name. Thank you. I would do this too to space the time out from the hairdressers visit. I may try this out as I only use home kits and not separate products. I think the fear is if one goes 'brassy'? I have dyed the odd thing in the bathroom when clumsy! I would like to point out that there are some that cannot go to a hairdressers due to allergies (my sis has become super sensitive to an ingredient in a dark dye and the salon 'fumes' can set her off... can only go blonde)She does have a mobile hairdresser now. Thank you again for this episode. Nina xoxo
Because of the pandemic I was forced to do this and found your tutorial extremely helpful . Thank you so much. My hair colour is similar to yours and I have used those shades. It worked really well so again, I just wanted to say thank you 😊
Nadine.. You have helped so many people, me included ,as next week I have to help a friend colour her hair, when we come out of lockdown. My own hair is so thick I have to have a professional colour but have managed to cut it. God help my hairdresser when she see the job I've done. Your hair is fabulous 💇♂️
I am 67 and was getting my hair professionally colored with highlights until about a year ago when I decided to try to grow my hair longer so I could wear it up in a messy bun. Since so little of my hair shows now, I decided to do it myself. I only leave mine on about 25 minutes and then run the color through the ends for 5 minutes to blend it a bit more. Save a lot of money and time. Thanks for sharing how you do it.
Haha Nadine, you never fail to amaze me.. I wouldn't have ever guessed you would actually do a video colouring your own hair. . I'm 47 now.. I started going grey at 19.. I'm about 80% grey, I've been colouring mine for years. . But I do want to go lighter. I wouldn't mind finding a hairdresser who would lighten it then tell me the colour combo mix.. I was a hairdresser many moons ago.. but went into becoming a makeup artist and dry session stylist.. so I'm out of touch with modern colouring. . Thanks for the video hun.. love ya xxxxxxxxx
Wow I want to do the same color ASAP. I have a long roots now though. I wonder if that will look alright on the longer roots. You are so beautiful and cool young lady. You did great job. I want a friend like you💝
I just started doing this at home myself!! I found Wella colour touch which worked quite well. Like you I am 8N naturally, I got 9N for roots but think will try 8 next time, the Wella is a demi permanent so wears out after about 15 washes which is good if you are a beginner at home colour like me. Was pretty happy with the result. So happy for this video Nadine, thank you! Also also that we both have similar har AND skin which makes yiur redommendations work really well for me 😊🙏
I chuckled throughout this video because I love your personality and the phrases that you used. You are adorable and I'm ready to (Shoosh...don't tell anyone) 😀 tackle my greys at home because of your information.. Thanks. Great video.👍
I used to be able to go 4 weeks, then do a root touch-up myself and then go to my colorist 2 weeks later. Over the year this would save me at least 3 salon visits a year. Now my roots come in after 3 weeks and after doing my roots, I'm in the salon every 4 -5 weeks. This is by far my greatest beauty expense, but I'm not brave enough to go gray completely. I use the same process as you, but I buy Clairol Root Touch-up which gives you the color and developer and I just mix and apply. Have ever considered going gray? Some women look gorgeous and some look old. I'm afraid to find out which I am!
It’s so bloody expensive to go to the hairdressers so often though!! I’m with you. Salon supplies and fingers crossed! Like you say - never for bleach or lightening... but for greys...
I'm glad you did this! Thank you! Its annoying that the professional brands are so ... (I don't know what the word is...) They probably assume they are protecting the hairdressing industry but really they are missing a massive market. There will always be times where you want to go to the hairdressers but equally, when you want to colour at home, you want access to the best that is available. Not selling 'professional' versions because they assume people can't read instructions is kind of patronising, its not that different to using a box colour anyway. You end up paying more for inferior product (box colours)... Be interesting to see when these brands wise up and democratise the hair industry like skincare brands are doing atm...
Thank you Nadine! I Am at the 8th level as well, I do have highlights on the lengths of my hair and the contrast looks nice on me. I am your type, brown eyes, medium skin. Now I am looking to stop highlighting, but still want to keep this effect of contrast between the roots and the lengths. My God, I have never ever realized that as the color goes off of lengths, it becomes a natural highlight that I want, until you said it!
If I could give you two thumbs up I would! Thank you SO much for finally doing this for all of us. I’m coloring my roots tomorrow and I’m going to try your technique! Keep up the good work Nadine! 💜
So I watched this on Instagram but wanted to comment - YOU ARE SO BEAUTIFUL!

That's exactly what happens to my hair, drives me crazyyyyyy !!!
Thank you SO much for this. The ponytail tip is the game changer for me with fine, fluffy hair.
Thank you so much. I am in USA, California. This will be my first time doing touch up only (usually all over, disaster). You are the only one that showed how to do the back! Thank you! Going to do right now! 🥰
I'm bloody impressed!
Only Nadine could continue to look fabulous while doing an at-home dye. Thank you for the tutorial! My grays continue to creep in, I’ll need this.😉
I’m ready to try! Thank you so much!!
Just beautiful! Thanks, for sharing!
Thank you for doing this video. It covers a topic that many do not wish to discuss...💜
Thank you Nadine! Perfect timing, my grey roots are driving me mad. I will tackle them at home now x
It looks great! My base color is very dark brown and pulls warm so I have to use an ash. But the one good thing is, as you mentioned, greys give you natural highlights. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge.
I think it looks great. And think of the money you saved. Thanks for sharing. Much love and please stay safe..xoxo
Nina xoxo
Brilliant! Tried your method today. It works! Thank you
Absolutely, I'm glad you showed us! 😊
Because of the pandemic I was forced to do this and found your tutorial extremely helpful . Thank you so much. My hair colour is similar to yours and I have used those shades. It worked really well so again, I just wanted to say thank you 😊
Lo
I accidentally got the chocolate on my peanut butter. Right. I’m off for the touch up apt.🤣
Nadine.. You have helped so many people, me included ,as next week I have to help a friend colour her hair, when we come out of lockdown. My own hair is so thick I have to have a professional colour but have managed to cut it. God help my hairdresser when she see the job I've done. Your hair is fabulous 💇♂️
Exactly what I do! I can't afford to go to the salon as often as my white roots dictate! Love this video Nadine ❤
Nadine. I love you. Thank you for doing this. I color my own roots too and it's so good seeing this for reference 🙏
You look great with your hair up!:)
Janice Duerr I sometimes run the colour through the ends as well ,but it takes 10 minutes for me .
thx for great video i have been dying my roots for years and learned a lot tips
wonderful with lockdown I need to do same thank you from USA
I want a friend like you💝
Nice work, how fantastic of you to share xx
Great tutorial. I would love to color my own hair and admire your talents. Hugs! xoxo
I loved watching this!!!! reminds me of home as I am from England too
Wow, well done. Looks great
Thanks for this. Did it. It works!! And saves a fortune x
Great job, Nadine! I have to touch up every 3 weeks so I understand how you feel!
It’s so bloody expensive to go to the hairdressers so often though!! I’m with you. Salon supplies and fingers crossed! Like you say - never for bleach or lightening... but for greys...
We all do it, it's awfully hard to go in every 2 weeks! Thanks for sharing :)
Awesome tips no mess..thnx so much
Excellent Nadine, I've also been doing my own hair for years but your video has given me an easier way to do it......thanks and also for the links 😍😊
