Squid Game came out of nowhere and took the world by storm. This Netflix original series from South Korea is absolutely shocking and disturbing, but you can't help but binge it as quickly as possible. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk had spent 12 years trying to get it made, and Netflix finally took a shot on the filmmaker with incredible results. Let's go over the entire show and it's thematic meanings.

58:55 What happened was that they did cut in line which first comes off as weird because the whole thing about the games is equality so why would the workers allow that. Well the masked man admits that he knew some people were going to cheat and get extra food, but that that form of cheating in this specific situation was allowed and encouraged and the organization wanted them to do that.

So happy you guys covered SG! I live in South Korea and it’s so incredible to see how it’s blown up all over the world. They transformed a few of the metro stations here in Seoul into the sets from the show and it was surreal! The big doll was just staring at me like 👀

1:15:19 You guys are both right. Gi-Hun considered Sang-Woo a friend but Sang-Woo always thought Gi-Hun was beneath him. So even though they had a history, they weren't really friends, explaining why Gi-Hun wanted to partner up with Sang-Woo but Sang-Woo kinda ditched him and went with Ali. Sang-Woo instead turns to Ali because he considers him to be his greatest asset. So you guys are both pretty evenly correct.

I didn't make the connection that Sang-Woo was narrating the beginning! I thought it was Il-Nam since half of the show is basically his story haha. Like a Thor and Thanos situation

1:00:34 Well Gi-hun is like Ali, he's very trusting. So even though at first he expects Sang-Woo of lying, he pushes it down in his subconscious. However, Sang-Woo keeps betraying Gi-hun's trust again and again like not partnering with Gi-Hun for the marbles game, not staying awake with him when they had to guard during the night, and coming from the marbles game alive. This all sits in the back of his minds (the actor does a really good job of showing that the character notices this stuff but doesn't want to believe/accept it) until he literally sees Sang-Woo kill people. That's when all this stuff comes during out from Gi-Hun's mind. I kinda like that it's never explicitly stated, but that the viewer has to infer that Gi-Hun was picking up on this based on the actor's performance. It makes me appreciate the series more since not all the plot points and foreshadowing are revealed at the end like they are in countless other works.

Great stuff you completely missed the final death scene of Il-Man though!!!
He asked for water to set off the tainted/poisoned water which gave him ~30mins to live.
He made Gi-Hun play the 7th game/bet on the 7th floor allowing Gi-Hun actually proving to Gi-Hun he is no different from a VIP observer betting on the life of the homeless man. That Gi-Hun could have rescued the the man but he didn’t.
At the same time he honoured Gi-Hun’s wager to kill him at midnight if the man is rescued. Which Il-Man possibly setup all along

45:15 I don't think he gives Ali money out of the kindness of his heart, but he does it because he thinks he's better than him. I'd equate it to a rich man feeling like they're obligated to throw a homeless man a penny on the street. Sang-Woo tries to avoid a bunch of the characters are first because he thinks that they're lesser and not good enough for him (which is why he lets the Gi-hun pick the umbrella) and only when he realizes that he can use those friends as pawns to ensure his living, since he thinks his life is worth more that others', does he accept the proposal of team work. I think it's somewhat sad because on the outside he wants to be the rich guy who's better than everyone else, but deep down he knows he doesn't have "the goods" the back up his ego because if a rich person is egotistical they're dipshits but at least they have somewhat of an authority to be an egotistical dipshit, Sang-Woo isn't even rich but rather terribly in debt. So he sees the giant ball of cash as the perfect opportunity to get everything he wanted and fix all his mistakes. So when he gives Ali the money, he does it out of ego, not out of compassion, that's why he literally rolls his eyes while with Ali because he thinks he's "too good" for Ali and that someone so peasant-like is a waste of time.

1:44:35 I agree with what James is saying, though he is wrong in this specific part. Though most were American, there specifically was a British, Chinese and Japanese VIP. If you count player 001, there was also a Korean VIP as well, but yeah I think the elites were a little bit cliche. Though I do agree that the show go a bit worse after episode 6, Anthony (I would just say you bc I'm pretty sure you read all the comments but just incase I'll keep it broad incase it's James who reads this) kinda made it seem like it got boring afterwards. I still thought the last 3 episodes were entertaining and good, just a bit worse. I did think that the finale, even though there were a lot of aspects that made me REALLY enjoy it, there were a lot of aspects that made me REALLY dislike it. The second to last episode I thought was really good, as good as the first 6 if not better, with the chick dying and the guy with the cool mask being revealed (even though I saw it coming I still thought the twist was good and you could tell they mask guy felt bad about killing his brother) it was pretty insane. I think it would have been best to just combine the second to last and last episode together by keeping the second to last episode literally how it was, including a bit more of a build up and a bit longer of the actual squid game (so like 20-25 min total), and then shaving off a bunch of the content after the game including him meeting player 001 again, I would have cut that because I actually thought the twist made me appreciate it less. Anyways, have like only 10 min of Gi-Hun being depressed (not 35) and then another 10 of him turning his life around and then deciding to go back to the game. So ultimately it would've been an 1 hour and 10-20 min finale which is reasonable considering the episodes were long anyways and this was the finale so you'd expect the episode to be a bit longer anyways.

1:41:10 I think he's going to go back to try to preach to the other players to not let their moral break and to remain good. At leas that's how I interpreted it. He's knows not only what the games are, but more importantly what they do and how they break your spirit and morals, so he's going to go to the games and try to have everyone remain good and agree to forfeit. However, since an immediate forfeit wouldn't make a season 2, he'll probably try to do that, but they won't listen, but at the end of the games everyone will hopefully listen and they'll agree to leave at the very last game or something.
