Mary Harron's need to bring Elllis' book to the screen seemed to threaten a searing revision or a visceral, radical defense of the book's malignant sarcasm, but most of "American Psycho" just sits there, looking at trouble, rather than looking for it - smug, overjoyed to exist at all. Harron's most biting scene involves the jealous show-and-tell of business cards between executives which is a sharp substitution for penis envy. Mary Harron is not making an intriguing point as much as she has forged an exercise in getting away with murder. That sense of bleak fun permeates Harron's film; but she takes a lot of Bateman's behavior too seriously for the story to resonate as the satire it is. Mary's approach to the book is castigating and dismayed, as though she reached the last few pages and decided that Patrick had to be stopped.

For what it’s worth-The writer said that the fact people are questioning the reality of her movie is a failure on her part. She intended it all to be real. Way more interesting considering the theme

But them pulling their properties and not wanting them featured in the film was a huge financial misopportunity. Especially with how successful the movie became after it’s opening
Just look for some other people's feelings about growing up with this '80s movie- its legacy is beyond words. Not great film craftsmanship, lot of kids actors, but an all-time lasting legacy for those who saw this as a kid, lots of adults are creeped out.

My take is that the "psycho" in the title is not "psychopath" but "psychotic". Having had a few drug induced psychotic episodes off of amphetamines in my younger years; I would literally be drawing for hours while "dreaming" yet actually physically awake, having no idea that it didn't really happen until having a shocking moment of clarity afterwards. Literally like waking up from a vivid dream. What were those pills they keep showing him taking? Imma put my money on amphetamine derivatives. Doesn't mean he never killed anyone, as many psychotics commit murder during an episode. But it's certainly hinted that most of the film is pure deranged fantasy. So all in all; unsubscribed..
Leonardo DiCaprio wanted either Stanley Kubrick Martin Scorsese or Oliver Stone to direct before he backed out to make The Beach

American Psycho was written by a woman.
Yeah! It was Mary Harron and the actress who plays Patrick’s friend, she co-wrote the film 🙌
