Just remember that the parry window is actually quite small.
When in doubt, block earlier than later.
I find that perfect guard is the same as Bloodborne parry, as the attack is going to hit not as it's charging up
@@silverkuro4219in bloodborne you just shoot when attack after a wind up start to go your way. You dont have to wait more than that. In LoP I feel like its not always the case.
@@PTHYTQV Lies of P is a short moment before you get hit. The timing feels more clear to me, once I know the attack. Wind ups were confusing for me in blood borne. I could not get the parry to work. Im finding this game much easier, even landing them on bosses I've just met.
edit, well, easier to parry, I find the actual game harder, w bosses having a lot more HP.
It also seems that, the camera angles can really fuck you since the characters often are like 2x or more the size of you.
@@klabboy13 that def does happen, at first I just tried to perfect guard everything, then eventually I end up pushed into a corner with bad camera and if the boss is too big, I cant escape. Later I began to mix in dodge and run/ reposition, it helped that. Would be nice if we had better camera control during those odd angles.

The game is a masterpiece. This one of those games that idc about anyone’s reviews. Based off my expo experience so far. It’s everything I wanted it to be. Basically a tru next gen Bloodborne
For me its a simple 10/10 - Fun Engaging and Great Story that gave me feels :)
@@P4wnyhof
Absolutely agree I’m playing it and literally blown away by everything this game has to offer.
I am so glad this game came out. I haven't been able to play through bloodborne because I use xbox, and it also feels like they're never gonna make bloodborne 2 or port the first one to xbox
Facts. This is my favorite game now
This game is broken. The dodge and parry are trash. Another souls like flop.
thank you. i am usually good with a parry but i was struggling a little with the narrow parry window. now, i'm nailing the perfect guard almost every time
It's only narrow if you spam. It shortens the window.
In my opinion, in order for any enemy, you’re fighting to guard perfectly you have to get a base animation and then time it from there one Mississippi to Mississippi, and so on once you get that timing right for each individual enemy, you’ll be able to block for consistently without relying on just sight
Then doing that for every different attack for every different enemy 😓 it sucks that dodging is so bad in this game
I had almost given up on being able to improve enough to progress until I watched this. I am so glad I am able to keep playing this incredibly cool game. Thank you sensei
Happy i could help :D!
@@P4wnyhof I want to play lies of p to experience the art style of the graphics and story, but i'm not a fan of bloodborne like difficulty. How is the difficulty with the new patch? Does it makes lies of p significantly easier or will I still be dying a lot?
@danielmoung9098 You will die. A lot. But as with all soulslike games once it finally "clicks" for you you'll feel like a god as you destroy enemies that used to kill you over and over.
It's all about getting a feel for the combat and finding a play style that works for you.
Don’t ever give up bro, we all start bad then work our way up
@@DoctorRin_2 that’s what makes these games fun
I find when they do delayed attacks, if you hit them with a quick attack then guard or dodge, it makes it much easier to hit their timing. Rather than trying to guess when the attack will drop. Plus you can sneak in more damage between attacks.
In short. When you see an animation attack coming - press guard.
Actually it's better to hold guard b/c the timing is all different, and then when you see the animation coming release guard quickly and then quickly attempt to perfect guard. This gives you more leniency b/c it gives you an opportunity to block quick attacks you weren't expecting and there's more room for error when you attempt a perfect guard b/c holding guard reduces the response time of the parry so at worst it just becomes a block most of the time if you mis time the parry.
Mf got confused between Lies of P and Life of pi in the intro alone.... lmao
One gripe I have is that enemies dont get interrupted by your attacks reliably. The toughest fight ive had so far is with that survivor npc in the factory. He just keeps attacking nonstop and even if you do perfect block, your counterattack will just be a hit trade because his next attack will hit you.
I did manage to beat him eventually but at some point I considered switching to the rapier because it has less recovery time before you can block after attacking.
The best way to beat the human like npcs is probably dodging tbh. You can just dodge all attacks, and when you see when he's done, you can give him a massive back fatal attack. The survivor in the factory is kind of hard to do this with, due to the tight spaces and a table in the freaking middle, but its the most efficient way. The best thing about perfect guarding is when you can break their weapon.
The thing to remember is that most of the time, perfect parry does not stagger the enemy. If they have an attack that hits 3 times, you need to perfect parry 3 times in order to get stagger damage. With enough perfect parries, their health bar will turn white and then you can do a charged attack and it’ll stagger then for a critical attack
that guy is easy.. he attacks you dodge then hit him.. then get some distance and do it again.. its good in these games with stamina bars to go in and do your thing then step back and recharge.. let them attack then you dodge and hit him and get distance recharge then repeat..
with him i ran away, and while he was kinda dazed after the combo, i'd attack.
Skip all dat mess and buy a ton of throwables, blade buffs, and resistance ampoules while grinding your levels & weapons. Every single boss gets owned by distracting them with your Spectre, and throwing a crap ton of type-specific throwables in between you hitting them with charged-grindstone buffed blades.
I played Strength & used that first sword throughout the entire playthrough.
Malum District Vendor has all your throwables & buffs. Cessani Vendor has cheaper Electric buffs & throwable. Elysion Vendor has all your save-ergo buffs.
Can do that if you want easy mode or enjoy perfect guessing
Yea I don’t want to play easy mode id rather play the game solo and learn how it should be played otherwise what’s the point… standing miles away and lashing throwable hardly seems like fun
Git Gud
I have very few complaints, but in such a fast paced + difficult game… I should be able to guard at any time, not be stuck in my attack animation, especially after I’ve connected already.
Technically yes I want to agree
Practically you gotta get the timings right
Not sure how much better the game would haven been with animation cancel
I honestly have to agree, personally I think that it is one of the most fundamental mechanics that distinguishes the game from sekiro parrying
That basically gets rid of the recovery time factor, doesn’t it? So there’d be no merit in using quicker weapons
i just started this game and stumbled onto your channel i am so glad i did. Incredible insight and helpful tips! i have gone from feeling defeated to being excited to play. Did I subscribe? i sure did.
Thanks mate! There is tons of videos about lies of p!
The parry is slightly before than it feels it should be he actually has to have the block up before the hit just slightly
Exactly!
Yeah they f’d up the parry mechanic. 🤦 it doesn’t come out at frame 1 so it doesn’t count sometimes. Smh gl man this game is rough
People under play how good dodging is when fully upgraded, especially later game. I used dodging exclusively to fight Romeo and did not lose any health. You do have to get perfect timing, but it is possible. I also use primarily use long-range spears and trusting weapons and long blades, so the majority of a heavy charge attack that can hit perfectly when you double dodge away and I also use the puppet string legion arm which can get you closer as well. All of my passives are focused on charge and fable attacks, and now I stager faster with charge attacks than perfect guard. I know mine is good because I have a dedicated build around it, but if you can put your mind to it, you can come up with some crazy builds that seem like they should not work.
We play identical, now I'm building prefect block on top of that because of the grindstone
yeah blocking and perfect blocking is kind of a waste of time when you can just dodge every enemy or stay out of their attack range then quickly move in to hit them. I beat Romeo on my first try and he was so easy. This is before the nerf patch btw.
Fuck this broken ass game. The dodge and parry system are trash. The gameplay and controls are clunky. It could have been so much better.
thats when its upgraded. At the start, you are forced to fight with a bad dodge for a bunch of game play hours. You're encouraged to get good with block system. Later it can be played way more like blood borne. Would be better if link dodge could be enabled at the very start, along with the dex class/ rapier starting or just more dodge s. Maybe the strength( better stagger?) and balance( more stamina and hp? ) could also have their own starting P organ skill.
I just came from Seikro so I’m trying to get the timing down 😂 the game is still a blast. Thanks!
9:08 Something to note actually - having a single A-scale weapon may not always be the best approach, especially late-game or ng+. As you progress further and get more ergo, pumping so many points into a single Stat will begin to have lower results (ex: A-scaling for motivity, you get around ~4 extra damage for your level of motivity, but as put more points into it (around 30+), the attack you gain per point decreases to +3, +2, etc.
If you have a handle with B-scale motivity and C-scale technique, you want to put a lot of points in motivity, but when you begin to get less attack per point, you can switch to pumping points into technique. It's a lot more efficient than having a single A-scaling for a weapon for the entire game.
I have held back getting this game, mainly due to the fact I have never actually known if I was any good at parrying (as when playing bloodborne I found shooting easy, and Elden Ring I used ranged builds mainly).
I never played Sekiro as I thought I may get it, and end up having to buy a new tv and ps5 remote after half an hour!
I watched this vid, and took the plunge and nabbed Lies of p. And man I am having an absolute blast!
The parrying for me took a bit of time to get right, but I just fought any and every enemy in the first zone before the Hotel, and seemed to just click eventually. Now I actively seek out every enemy just so I can hone my skills even more.
I agree with a lot of people.
This game is 10/10 for me. A true next gen Bloodborne sequal.
Happy you took the plunge and thanks for giving me a chance :D!
@@P4wnyhof welcome sir! Cheers for the very helpful video 👌
My best tip just watch their arm pit you’ll usually get it. Also use a weapon with a high block negation
Dodging is a perfectly viable way to play the game in my opinion. Parrying is high risk, high reward. Kind of like parrying in Bloodborne. You are rewarded for doing it, but dodging and then hitting is still miles easier and better. And yes, while it does say you cannot dodge fury attacks, what you can do is get out of the way of the fury attack, either by dodging early, or running away.
Later on, some bosses will really be good at turning around suddenly, but with a good dodging build, you will take less damage while dodging, and also gain an additional mid dodge dodge, so you can dodge the dodgiest of situations. :3
Seriously though, the "best" way to play the game is to parry. If you learn it the game will be really easy. But I would recommend new players only learn to parry one or two attacks per boss, look out for those attacks, and then punish their recovery time window with a heavy attack. Dodge all the other attacks that are too sus. If in doubt, try to learn parry windows of attacks that are initiated from further away, so you have time to see it coming.
The best tip I can give is that each attack is always the same timing. Learn to listen to the audio cues. When you see the wind up, you can count internally, or feel out the time between wind up and the time you hear the blocking/getting hit sound. It's like guitar hero. You see the note coming and then you must remember the internal interval between when you first see it and when you hear the note.
You pay something either w/ stam or wep durability, pick your poison. On my 1st pt I went from going w/ guard in early game to dodging mid game and back to dodging & guarding late game. The problem I have w/ the guard system is my wep was constantly breaking throughout the fight where dodging w/ the dodge ammy and stam fixed the stam issue and my wep broke far less. I'm going to try a new build to optimize the weapon durability to see if that works... The devs really force players to TIGHTLY min max to find a good balance and I have yet to find that but I've only done one play thru.
Yeah, the dodge roll was so bad that I figured guarding / perfect guard was going to be the best defensive part of the game. Can't say I'm a fan of it, but I appreciate the tips.
At least its better then the ghost of tsushima dodge bro this one is at least decent
Dodge roll isn’t bad at all. Direction matters for dodging. It’s a very viable option and can even become something you build for if you really aren’t into perfect guards.
I finally beat this game for the first time last night, and i have said since the beginning, the parry/perfect guard mechanic just feels so weird. Its like sometimes they artack so fast that you almost need to parry before they even begin the attack, and other times, its spot on, just press it when it connects. Wonky hitboxes dont yelp at times, but I feel like the real reason isnt even necessarily the parry window, but rather the attacks. Other parry based games feel so fluid because the attacks are more rhythmic, whereas here they want you to parry on reaction time alone. Every enemy has these wild jerky motions, and weird delays between attacks. Some even grow extra body parts at random that you can barely see, like the green monster, or the infected puppets later on. It kind of feels like they wanted to recreate Sekiro combat without understanding that sekiro is a game of rhythm, not reaction. Still a great game. It just makes it much harder
Yeah they tried to do some weird Chimera of Dark Souls and Sekiro with the perfect counter shit in this game, imo Elden Ring didn't have Sekiro blocking for a reason.
Amazing just watched this video 5 minutes ago and killed. A boss that i was struggling for days . Easy way to explain 🔥🔥
Happy it works mate!
The frame by frame is helpful, but holy crap my block timing is bad
Best lies of p youtuber
Thanks mate :D!
I’ve been struggling so bad with this game. This is my first souls game and I’m trying my hardest and I’m still in the beginning
I'm the same, it feels good to see other people who are similar hh
same here
Am digging this game so far.
10/10 experience
Small correction, perfect guarding still takes some stamina, conciderably less, but it still uses stamina, the game itself mentions it
I feel validated for spending my time with the boxing dummy before the 1st boss now. I have definitely gotten used to guarding and perfect guarding over defaulting to dodging. The combat in this game is just a nice soup of other combat ingredients from other games:
Charged R2 from DS3 / BB
Rally mechanic from BB
Guarding / deflecting from Sekiro
Perfect guard / parry from DS
ALL COMBINED
Tysm! I beat the first boss with this in mind, now my blocking is even better!
Having played Elden Ring, Wo Long, Nioh and Sekiro, and not Bloodborne, I feel like Sekiro is the game that comes closest to this for combat. It’s all in the timing and you can’t hesitate. Thanks for the vid. Very informative.
Despite Sekiro being similar is still vastly different - Give BloodBorne a try and you notice what i mean :D!

I spent over 24 hours trying to beat Champion Victor and almost beat the living shit out of myself. I finally did it by dodging but I have to figure this perfect block out. I press the block but it's like my controller doesn't respond fast enough.
Dodging is better for Victor imo, hell you can just run circles around him sometimes. Guarding his attacks pushes you back.
@@apharys8921 Thanks, I ended up finishing the game and it was like a comment I read here on TH-cam "don't bash the game, get better. : )
This is a game that you just feel it's a masterpiece. Doesn't even matter who says what you just love it.
100%!
Ah yes, Lies of Pie. My favorite food-like game
Yesterday, I was playing and had a couple accidental perfect guards with the Two Dragons sword simply because I was charging up a heavy attack, which has a guard point in it. After tinkering with the timing and trying to recreate it, I realized that I had to perform the animation and finish it BEFORE the zombie thing even swung. It showed a perfect guard when the enemy's hand was BEHIND HIS HEAD still. I'm somehow deflecting an attack that hasn't even happened yet.
It really just proved to me why I could never get the hang of it in LoP when I beat literally every enemy in Sekiro, including the Inner Bosses. It really, really annoyed me as I've been trying to learn the guard timings on enemies with odd animations and long-ass fake-out windups. To me, this guard system needs more work and fine-tuning, it doesn't make sense to be deflecting an enemy's arm when it's still behind his body. Maybe understanding this will help me time them from here on out, because I'm 45 hours in and I still eat hits constantly. The dodge window is terrible, and the perfect guard feels broken too, but if you ask for advice or complain at all, literally every response you get is "Skill issue. It's easier than Sekiro." because people need to feel superior for being good at their Special Hard Game.
I love you so much for this (ignore the valorant pfp) i was always having trouble parrying and i managed to get over my performance anxiety and can explore everything without getting scared 😊😊😊😊
Enjoy the Journey mate!
You said Lies of Pi too!!! I always end up saying Lies of Pi too. Life of Pi was a memorable movie! 🤣
Either it's peeeee or pie 👍
When I started this, I always TAPPED the guard button. Then one of the comments in your video said you HOLD the button. I screamed once, and now I'm managing the game. I've never played a soul game before, and this game is super challenging for me. Thanks for all your videos. I'm going for tech build, but I saw your adv build, so I'm leaning toward that build for now. Does advance build slow your ATK?
I played all of them, and its still challenging.
So best way to perfect guard / parry is to hold your guard up, then wait for the attack to connect, then release & quickly hold guard again?
The handle does change the move-set of the blade EXCEPT for the execution. That always goes by what blade you have, not the handle
The parrying time seems very odd in this game. Most of the time I parry while thinking I totally missed the timing window.
When the shoulder starts to move towards you is a good point to block....
Thank you!!! I needed this
Happy if it helps!
Is there ANY way in this game to get the non existent perfect guard window to improve? I'm not wasting my money until their is. Maybe not even then.
No there is no way :) You need to get gud in this case - Game is also on game pass no need to "waste money"
If you come into this playing sekiro beforehand you will feel right at home. It makes more sense to guard because the enemies posture weakends. Which means the attack over time won't be as strong and they'll be easy to stagger triggering the fatal attack opportunity. I dodged a handful of times. I would say I blocked 85 to 90 percent of the time and some moments I would dodge. Also you gotta block before the point contact not during or after. Its a bit weitd but you get used to it
Thanks man, this is just what i was looking for.
My first souls game whereby I am actually hyped to go into ng and ng+
All 3 endings are 100% worth it! High recommendation
i love lies of pie
So when it comes to guard damage reduction, the higher the percentage the more damage you block right?
1:58 did this man just call this game Lies of Pie?
I love this game. It feels super smooth and the atmosphere is wonderful. A few not so great level design choices.. looking at you cathedral... and the parrying has me throwing my controller but this is a masterpiece
Just started this today after 3 rounds of BMWK. I’m usually a Dmc and Gow player but I’m starting to like these souls games
After I get a stagger, I have a hard time getting that big flurry attack to actually hit. I see the indicator, and walk up and tap the light attack, and it only works about half the time. Is there some trick to this the community needs to know? Because I've been watching people like fightincowboy play this game, and he's having the same issue, and he's much better at these games than I'll ever be, so it seems like there's an issue with this.
After a stagger and the enemy bar turns white-not a back stab-you R2, then get those red slashes toy see when back stabbing, then R1
Oh wow. Tysm for this video. Finally someone explains it so its not confusing to me lol. Im not horrible at perfect gaurds, but i mess them up once in awhile which is just way to much with this game 😂😂 TY TY TY!! Subscribed!
Gotta sometimes break down the basic basics to enhance everyones fun!
@P4wnyhof the fight that made me realize that maybe I wasn't as good at guarding as I thought I was, was that damn walker of illusions. Huuuge pain in the arse.
My favorite content creator at it again thank you for everything
What's lies of pie? I must have the wrong game.
how do you do multiple perfect guards when an enemy is throwing multiple attacks quickly?
I suggest to learn the rythm if your eyes cannot follow through it. Some early enemies with "spears" teach it by storming at you. Each hit can be parried. It's like a 1-1-1-1-1 rythm, and this rythm will reappear in different skins and shapes. I can't see it fully , but I can learn the countdown.
Mostly rythm - But it is better to simply block the one attacks and dodge the multiple attacks!
Thanks for the tips. Very useful
best combat guide for beginners, thanks!

@@P4wnyhof Awesome!!!
That's what gamepass is for
@@Muffinpurplegurk That's for people that has gamepass for Xbox or a good PC. I have PS5.
This is like sekiro 2 for me but I’m struggling a long time on almost every boss. But for some reason I don’t care. I just enjoy it and then feel so satisfied when I finally win
i wish these games you could replay the bosses whenever you want... i really like the training area to familiarize yourself with the weapons and the dummies are basic but games like horizon forbidden west have actual enemies in a fighting ring you can practice against and in that game it really doesnt matter but games like this it would be so much nicer to have a better training area against a training boss.. i used the factory entrance as a spot to train against the big dude with the wheel on his back.. and i suppose the bosses themselves are training bosses if you think about it..
Legend! Works like a charm!
Crazy that this masterpiece is free on Xbox Game Pass…such a deal! 😎
Im loving this game and got to the fruit tree so far without too much difficulty ( and some tipa from youtube)
Im expecting it to ramp up later game though.
I usually dont like action gamss with too many RPG mechanics but the ones in Lies of P are a joy.
That is already quite the accomplishment! Good luck on wrapping up the game
How to 'charge' your weapon?
I can use that blue bar once and its gone for a long time.
And after guard.. L1... do you press R1 to hit back?
I selected to stay away from all attacks till i can react to the attaks, slowly gettin in, and only parry or guard those attaks that leaves huge openings for punishing.. all boses became really easy after that really. laxasia, Fuoco, last boss, and green beast are the only ones that became tricky. WHile Manus and the archbishop became an utter Joke =/... but thats just me...
Ha! I've been playing the game for a few hours, I'm not good at parry but something I xan get used to. After few hours I've notice that my perfect guard works when I press the button a bit faster than what would feel like a perfect guard. Still getting used to it😅
Excellent guide, really helpful thanks!😊
Very helpful. Appreciate it
Brilliant game! Thankyou for the excellent video Cheers!
What is this Lies of Pie game you speak of?
This boss took me 1 hour 30 min 😅 perfect guarding is the only way to go for me
You beat him thats all that matters :D
The way he says "baton".... where are you from?
Thanks for the guide! really helpful. I am having an issue with the perfect parry. On some enemies especially the police baton puppet i noticed that the block stays stuck after i block him. So when the red attack comes i usually get finished with that because P is already in blocked stance even if i reliese the button. Do enemies when their hits are heavy stagger my weapon? What is going on here? I never had this on Sekiro which I mastered deflecting.. Does anyone else have this issue?I play on PC with keyboard and mouse.
Now, why are we calling this "Lies of Pie"?
named after the famous puppet baker Pienocchio

Nice, that weapon/strat got me through Fuoco :D
Haven’t played yet but thinking of holding guard and letting go last min
Dodging is lower risk and good vs big slow enemies because you can roll to their side or back and they can't do much about it. It's also useful if there's an aoe involved or for grab attacks.
Plain guarding against a boss can get you killed, how fast depends on your build and weapon, I wouldn't recommend doing that unless you're built for it, it's generally better to try perfect guarding a little on the early side so if your timing is off you at least get a normal guard.
I'm sorry...did you say "pity timer"? What is that?
Brilliant video.
Thanks mate!"
Whats a chatge attack? If i hold r2 it just does an r2 attack iver and over. What am i missing?
stuck at the start of the game and after i opened this door theres a big more powerful enemy and i cant get past him..
Great video!
thank you, i needed this 😺😺😺
I just started playing and impatience is my weakness. I'm not calm when the boss is at low health, got too greedy and careless and that's when I got killed. It's frustrating!
Beware the nameless puppet you can not break his weapon so don't try to go for that.
As you reach the nameless puppet yous hould have "mastered" the game
This is the first game that got my interest. Ive tried dark souls and nior but didnt like those. This one seems better for me.
How did you get 5 pulse charges before this boss?
It looks like an interesting game, I'll have to check out some gameplay. Thanks p4wny.😊😜🤙
It's fantastic to be honest deep in love!
I learn with time the best defence with bosses fight is max agressive posture. Because perfect parrying with ceatures for example with "6 arms" and 18 animation attacks with its windows to pary can be .... Frustrating :D
Dude, There is someone behind you!.
ITS MYSELF WATCH OUT!
Im really enjoying the game im up to where your tracking down the alchemists but I keep clicking my guard in the perfect window of before the attack lands but just to late to get the guard up and i take full damage. theres a touch of delay with guarding that has made it difficult to master for myself.
Yeah but what if you can’t play in slow motion?
