This song means so much to me. After I came out and told my parents I was gay, this song really described the way I felt & helped me to deal with everything that was going on in my life at the time. Plumb and her music are so amazing, words can do no justice.
I know it has been 7 years, and you probably won't see my comment, but it was so nice to read yours. Welcome to the family. :) Plumb has always spoken to me as well.
I hope your parents are supportive or willing to understand. Let them ask any question & don't dismiss them, even if you are uncomfortable or annoyed. My mother's questions & my respectful response helped her a lot, she was an incredible support. She asked me what I was thinking when I said I liked a country music love song. I asked her what she meant, she said its about a man & a woman,my reply was it was about love. She nodded, smiled and thanked me. I loved her so much and miss her.
I used to listen to this song late in the night and just stare into my window. Absorbing the stillness of the night while drinkin my coffee and a cigarette on one hand. I loved my solitude. Those were priceless moments.
Wow! I am in tears, the lyrics are really hitting home for me now. The part of the song about we used to hold hands so tight with no question and now you're so near and I have never felt so alone.
Love you Plumb! I heard this album for the first time back in 2008/2009 or something when I was still a teenager. I still hear your beautiful voice today. Greetings from Portugal
it means so deep, my mom wants me to listen this after my dad passed away. i thought she was joking cos' its not the type of song that im into, the truth is that she saw me crying for the first time and after that i smile but i never cry again hehehe i miss my dad...
The husband/wife segment to me is powerful and pretty clear. But I was also a little confused about the teenager segment initially, but the more I thought about it I believe it is about a young person who is also struggling with something and his parents are not acknowledging his pain.
I see many people sayin they don't understand the video. To me it looks like the man is struggling to deal with a wealth of issues. He doesn't know how to express what he is feeling so he has chosen to withdraw from his wife and his kid and hide in the numbness of a drunken stupor. He is using alcohol to cope with life. His wife is trying to get his attention in the flashes of him and her cuddling. Those are flashbacks to a time when their love was strong before he turned to booze for answers. The boy is their son and really needs his Dad because he is becoming a man and has nobody to give him a solid example of the kind of man he should be. He is also being neglected by his Mother because she is so distracted by her need to fix Dad's issue. I hope this helps. Just a side note: The son went to a Christian concert and there is a suggestion that he is searching for the missing piece to his life there also.

Was this song in the movie "Boys Don't Cry." That movie was so raw. It opened many eyes. Exposed liars, terrorists & lies. Yes, those who participated in bullying, menacing & denigrating others because of their sexuality leading to the murders, rapes, spiritual deaths of many, were exposed. Either their hypocrisy or criminality were exposed. It is tragic that it took #TeenaBrandon's murder to shed a spot light on it but I'm glad we are beginning to evolve from that mentality.
Beautiful and amazingly deep song but I couldn't help but wondering if maybe boys not crying is a major contributor to males having almost double the suicide rate of females
+Aaron Reichert I think that your last comment is actually what the song is about. The Father figure in it is acting according to the old saying 'boys don't cry' but what the video is showing, and the song is hoping will happen is that, he will finally break free of tradition and allow himself to feel the emotions and cry if he needs to. His wife in the song and video longs to be close to him and support him, but he has closed himself off from both her and their son. The small part of the video when we see the sprinkler is turned on shows that life would be better if they opened up their emotions and allowed themselves to cry. The sad thing is, the video shows the son learning to close up from his father, yet I think the video hopes for change.
I think you see the husband and wife aren't really connected in their relationship anymore and the kid is caught in the crossfire. He's confused about the situation as evidenced by his outfit looking like a conglomeration of both the parent's outfits. The water at the end is probably symbolically washing away all that negativity and he's able to be himself. I have no idea if I go that right but I think I took a good stab at it...

What a song! Clearly one of the top well written Rock songs. The power/drive of this gem never sounds dull as the years pass by. One of my favorites.

But you're okay with this
Damaging awkwardness
So I'll just play it safe
And keep it inside
'Cause boys don't cry

So tight there was no question
But now even when you're near
I've never felt so alone
So what would you say to me
If you could talk to me
You could ask anything
I wouldn't lie
But you're okay with this
Damaging awkwardness
So I'll just play it safe
And keep it inside
'Cause boys don't cry
If you just stand beside me
I'll keep you in my life
Tell me how much you love me
And I'll be just fine
