I am a Canadian, and have been fantastically spoiled by wonderful public libraries. During the 1980s, I travelled the US east coast by boat. We would often check out the public libraries. They were a marvelous resource, but relative to Canada's system, they were underfunded, IMO, and many were struggling. I was told that the US has private libraries, which I had never heard of. Still, every single library we stopped to visit did their very best to keep the stacks full, and offered an array of interesting events, something for every age, daytime and evenings too. In my one year adventure, one of the best evenings was Movie Night in Charleston SC, where my waterlogged boyfriend and I were invited to watch African Queen with about 50 other people during a rainstorm. And another was in a "poor" library, where the librarian answered my questions about Gullah culture for nearly an hour, and told me why there were so few books on the shelves.
About 20 years later, I was staying in a tiny village in Saskatchewan with a population of less than 100 people. They had a tiny library, building donated to the village, and the village found the money to pay 4hr, 3xweekly, but open longer and most days with volunteers. Filled with worthy books, cds and dvds, all donated. With dial up internet access. My parents always made sure that we lived within walking distance of a library. Blessings heaped upon the shoulders of librarians!

My step father worked for ABC news from 1960 to 1990. He said that when 24 hour cable news became a thing, everything changed. Before, the networks assumed that the news was a public service and lost money. But the 24 hour news networks had to make money off the news, so they began to sensationalize and become more partisan.

As soon as I arrived in the US, I grabbed every opportunity by the neck and showed to our host country that we refugees are loyal and contribute back, maintain the health of the USA, economically and psychologically.… not one opportunity or crisis went to waste! In answer, came a deep booming voice from another cubicle, which said: "Don't you believe it!" The voice belonged to one of our foreign-born lieutenants, (now an American citizen), from Nigeria. A few seconds later, he stood before me smiling. He said, "The people who hate you, are those with power. But the people who have no power, love you! This is a great country to them, and that is why they struggle to come here." It really made my day. I blame the media, and teachers, for brainwashing our kids to hate their own country. But definitely not in these rich, white bubbles like you're claiming. He was dirt poor. It's not always about race. It's sometimes about wealth in those parts of the world. Libraries and public schools are designed to indoctrinate American kids with Democrat propaganda. Public lands are used by the Democrats to exert control over states from a federal position. The postal service is almost exclusively now meant for spying on Americans and rigging elections, again, for the Democrats. These things have been weaponized against the American people in the name of a political party that is bent on tyranny over the American people. The propaganda is the support of these things, because they want to make anyone who questions them into a pariah, because it is all the true source of Democrats power in America. In reality, America is no different than N. Korea with its fake grocery stores, except worse, because people actually know it's fake in N. Korea, while many Americans can't see past the shroud pulled over their eyes, that their standard of living is actually worse than most of the world, with propaganda to make them think it's better than the rest of the world, in order to keep them from realizing their true reality, that they live in an impoverished dystopian nation and have had soo much stolen from them.

Sadly, most of these are becoming a boondoggle, waste of money, or indoctrination factories. When I was a kid, it was reasonable to attend public schools. Now I have to spend big $ on a private school because I consider it child abuse to allow my daughter to attend a school that will teach her to hate me. As for public lands, I can't even take my dog to state parks unless I game the system and make him a service dog.

Fellow ex-South African here living in the States. The way I like to describe it is the reason America is the best country in the world is not because it's perfect. Far from it. But the union is always trying to get better. Sometimes it may be 5 steps back for 1 forward, but it's always changing and striving to BECOME the perfect union. Contrast that with most other countries that resist any form of change or shy away from discourse. Those countries believe they are already perfect or at least try project that image. America and Americans will be the first to acknowledge the union is far from perfect but every day, year, decade and century is spent striving for more.

I think that's a natural fault in human nature caused by us in the "first-world" having things come easy for a long time, so we find ourselves fixating on truly irrelevant things that someone in the third world would think was ridiculous. We had a hurricane here in Florida, USA a couple of years ago and my area had some trees down but relatively minor damage. Just 2.5 hours away by car in the coastal areas, they experienced winds nearly 3 times the speed we did, along with 4-6 meters of sea water intrusion (surge).
People in my area were complaining that it was taking too long for the crews to come and pick up the piles of tree branches from the roadside, and were complaining that it looked bad in front of their homes. I pointed out that some of our neighbors a couple hours away were living in tents in grocery store parking lots because their homes and everything in them was now a debris pile, not just some unsightly tree branches. Their neighborhoods were declared unsafe to enter until crews could clear powerlines, flipped over cars and random boats or other debris from the roads so they could start to evaluate damage and file insurance claims. I didn't mind some piles sitting if it allowed us to send more resources to those who were truly suffering. It seems many of us don't understand the difference between a minor inconvenience and losing everything you own, and in some cases, everyone you love. Just 45 miles away in the Bahamas (small island nation), there were no government crews cleaning up or helping people after hurricanes, and no functioning jobs or businesses to get supplies from. There were whole islands where all buildings were destroyed and people were digging through rubble looking for canned goods to eat. My community and many others collected donations and chartered private flights to help keep people from starving to death. So close, but so far away.

Same in Hungary. If you read the media (you know, the media which is not free and completely under state control), you can read that there is no freedom of speech (in fact you can read it in a dozen media outlets, so much for state mind control monopoly), there is corruption, autoritarianism and people are just saving up money to flee for good. Let's also not forget about those cannibal far rightist who hate everyone. But then, you visit the country and realize that people of all kind of minorities are A-OK, there are annual minority rallies organized that are cosidered risky in Western countries which are described in the press as the heaven on earth. Provoking and gaslighting people is good business because they like to complain and project their issues on others.

I stopped watching the news completely. It was an everyday event growing up here. I just cant tolerate the trauma and drama. I learned my love of America from my Irish Grandmother. As all other Nationalities, the Irish suffered too. She became a citizen and all her 4 sons fought in wars. Lost a son in Korea. She taught us what true patriotism was through his story. He was injured badly but was determined to go back to support the young troops who he said he would not let them go it alone. Especially 17 to 18 yr old young men. His name was Patrick McGonagle. The day he died, my Grandmother was a cook in a Seminary. There was an explosion in the kitchen with propane. She got blasted against the wall and fell. Her words were this “Pats dead”
He died that same day on August 15th. The feast day of our Blessed Mother. He did what he set out to do… Protecting his platoon from death. He received many medals and we all know him as a hero. My Grandmother taught every Grandchild about our American History through this sacrifice of her son.
I have a letter he wrote to his Mom. He said. “ This war will never end Mother” and “keep me in your prayers”
    God Bless every soldier.

I live in a small town in South East England and there has been one murder in 5 years and the whole town was talking about it for months. And it was a bar fight that got out of hand. The remote locking on my car stopped working and I haven't bothered to fix it. I seldom remember to lock my front door. I've forgotten what burglar bars look like. DO NOT try praise the UK brexit was done to trap the poor youth here stop em fleeing to eu to be poor in better surroundings instead they certainly arent worried about the incoming traffic are they! You may be old enough to have enjoyed the good financial years here before we fell apart but anyone under 25 cannot remember those free times, they dont demand privacy or quality they accept this current state its all theyv known but this is a failed and broken land where no amount of hard work can ever improve your standard of living and unless you inherit property youl likely be lifetime welfare housed or homeless as the waiting list is 14yrs even for women with kids so men just get a NO.. I hope parts of usa are still good il never afford a visa to leave here tho, but for a fact the uk is totally ruined you cant travel freely around London or even surrounding outskirts without paying tolls its absolutely awful here now for anyone with half a brain. Tobaccos next then petrol cars wev already had sugar banned and replaced with toxic sweetners that are banned for cancer abroad because we arent allowed to make such decisions by ourselves any more in this hellhole of an island. It may be a fools paradise to be babied and penned in 'safely' but this is hell incarnate for anyone old or wise enough to have experienced actual REAL freedom.

Just wanna say, the U.S may not be perfect.. but it's the best country for immigrants like us to start over from scratch, and it's true, if you work hard, play by the rules, you can MAKE IT HERE and live like a normal human being with FREEDOM under the clear blue sky. I LOVE AMERICA. And we appreciate you Serpentza for giving the insight and knowledge about the crooked CCP.

Glad you made it here. I have a friend from Vietnam whose family-14 of them- got out during the fall of Saigon. All they had were the clothes on their backs. They all got little jobs, pooled their money and sent their kids to college. Their kids are doctors and dentists and engineers, and they own several small businesses and an apartment building! Immigrants make the best Anericans in my opinion.

As a natural born American I married someone who came from a corrupt country in Asia. Her family LEGALLY emigrated to the U.S. She has shown me just how amazing my country is as she reveals what it's like not living here. It is natural for people to take things for granted. Most natural born Americans do. Our country is not perfect and that is because mankind is not perfect, but we take the best qualities of other cultures and have become the All-Star team when it comes to nations. China is not what many think it is. It has massive problems and will always have them as long as their people are not free to choose. I do hope China will become a democracy. Democracy's are not always perfect and can be manipulated, yet the people have the ability to enact change. Thanks for sharing this heart felt message.

@@paulthomson9014 How is the USA at "the bottom of the list" when it has become the richest nation in history as well as the most powerful in well under 300 years?
Europe had thousands of years to get its shit together, so it **should** be doing better, but now they have another war in their backyard that they can barely take care of, without significant help from guess who? The f'n USA.
I am not from The USA (please stop calling it America), but only a fool would think the USA is at the bottom of the list in any regards. Hell if you're from the West, you're one of the 1% of wealthiest people that have ever lived, a fact that seems to escape most Europeans.

It's not that the USA and West in general don't have problems, it's that the Western mindset is to fix, improve and move on to the next thing, rinse and repeat. This ideal also exists outside the West and the USA and the West draws these people to it providing a self-reinforcing cycle of progress.
As long as there are people there will always be problems but Western culture is pretty much the only one that looks up, looks to fix things and looks to improve on the past for a better future. All the rest are stagnant or regressive as evidenced by the state of countries like China, Russia and other authoritarian regimes where no one wants to live.
The culture of a society is probably the most important influence on how well it does over time.

I get this, I really, really do. Spent half a year travelling India and saw and lived in places of such immense poverty. Immersed myself in that ooverty abd lived with the indian people. It is a fucking difficult life, to say the absolute fucking least. i still find myself thinking back to it all the time, every day. But just because we have it so much better off in many ways does not negate the fucked up shit that has gone down under America, and how fucked we currently are.
I have a problem with our For Profit Prison System that has over 1 million Humans locked up and used them as slave labor. I have a problem with the wars we have waged and horrors we have spread, I have a problem with our War On Drugs and the horrors that spread throughout the world... I have a problem with the insanely high rate of suicide among men in this country. I have a problem with there being so fucking many people who are borderline homeless/are homeless in the wealthiest country in the history of the world. The Drug Epidemic, meth and fentanyl....
idk man. Things ain't good here. And yeah it's all getting exacerbated and worked up by Russia and China and made to look as bad as possible every step of the way, but shit. These days we are doing all the fucking work for them - their seeds of division are growing now...
I love this country dearly, the Land, I love Americans even, one on one that is. I will stay and die here, couldn't imagine ever living anywhere else. But to say that it's not in decline? Thats just not the case.
It's bad here. I am living through all of this shit they are showing in the news. I'm homeless out here in California. Thank god i'm not in one of the cities out here tho - shit I saw in Sab Francisco last time I was there for a week...it wad un fucking real. Like, I aint ever seen any shit like thar in India even, thenmebtal health crisis and the agressiveness of this decay....its super ultra fucked.
It's real and it's widespread. People aren't fucking doing well here, and it's a large part of the population, a massive part. It's just that if you are in the bubble of affluence here in the states, even if no affluent yourself, that bubble is one hell of a illusion. Really does put on a hell of a show of looking functioning, looking like all is well. But the reality is seeping in, and hens are coming home to Roost. And it's going to get ugly here....
Tldr the grass is greener - but also we are fucked up and shit is bad, and yeah that's also getting exacerbated by foreign actors, but it's also the reality we are facing and I think we need to acknowledge that reality, as much as it fucking hurts to acknowledge.

When I retired, I rode my bicycle across America from one ocean to the other. I met many Europeans along the way who were also riding on the Trans America Trail but in the opposite direction. We would stop alongside the road and chat. I was surprise that so many of the foreigners would say things like, "I always heard Americans are stuffy but now I find them to be such lovely people". On the other hand, my wife of 28 years is from Russia. Although we hear such negative things about Russians, there are so many wonderful people there. We just can't judge citizens by the actions of our governments.

A client, from another country who at the time lived here for 4 years, told me that she thought Americans were UNGRATEFUL. After 4 years she realized it wasn't that Americans were ungrateful, it is that IT'S NORMAL for us. We're just use to all the luxuries and easiness of buying things, etc. And we EXPECT it since it is normal. Most Americans do NOT realize that most countries do not have it as nice.

It is important to travel to some less fortunate countries in order to open your eyes. Thailand and Cambodia especially were my eye openers. Outside a tiny tourist area the people in Phnom Penh live very poor lives, and then you go into the countryside to see real poverty. Yet the people usually seem happy because that is all they know. Most of the human population on Earth live in poverty.
