I have never had a favorite singer, but I do now. As I watched a video of her performance for a tribute to Earth Wind and Fire, I recognized that when she sings she is in character, embodying the message of the song. This trimester I have been introduced to so many amazing African American voices in modern music history. There is always something that is authentic but also powerful in their way of using the voice. Cynthia Erivo makes me feel it in a more transcended way tho, I am no expert in this area, but I always felt a great deal of non-black voice and black voice tonality in her voice, and I crave this fine blend. It makes me believe that race does not define who we are, it only gives us advantages accordingly and with more humbleness, we appreciate all race and learn from all of them and improve on being a better singer or even a better person. :)
She's actually British Vannis, and studied at the lost exclusive and prestigious Drama school in England. She's classically trained so that's why I believe she has a differing style to the American singers. She is a true gift from heaven X

In the US, african American singers tend to sing louder and stronger and with more riffs due to the tradition of gospel singing which was born out of slavery. There is always “soul” to our voice but to the degree in which we project it, is based on our life experiences.
