Whatever "falling out" Iwerks and Disney had was temporary and Iwerks returned and very happily worked for Disney for many years afterwards. He didn't accuse Disney of taking the credit for his work either. Walt Disney CREATED and DESIGNED Mickey Mouse, but Disney himself wasn't as good of an animator as Iwerks, so Disney had Iwerks do the majority of the animation. This in no way constitutes screwing over Iwerks or taking the undeservedly taking the credit. This issue is almost always misrepresented. Iwerks did leave to try to create his own studio, but it didn't last long, the company lost investors and eventually folded. In 1940, Iwerks went back to Disney and worked on many of their biggest films. Iwerks eventually ended his career with Disney in 1971. Apparently he liked working for Disney enough to do it for about 3 more decades (1940-1971)

I was scrolling down to make this very comment. Well said. Iwerks is a animation pioneer, going on to create many of the innovations for Disney that would make their cartoons stand out over all the rest. Disney and Iwerks were partners in the early days, collaborating on the Alice and the Oswald shorts. Disney was the idea man, the director and the business man. Iwerks was the animator. I don't think anyone knows who actually first drew Mickey, but I would not at all be surprised to find that it was Iwerks.
I do not think the two men actually had a falling out. I think Iwerks just went off to create his own studio. When that failed Disney welcomed him back and gave him a very important and senior position. The remained together as friends until their death.

But WD is a bit of a hero to me, and I will argue in his support all day.

Disney also helped Iwerks's career by getting him to get out of Kansas City to California which definitely jump-started his career as an animator. It should also be remembered that during WWII that Disney was one of the most active in propagandists during the war. This is a disneyland fact but the flags on mainstreet is wrongly said that they put 48 stars on the flag so they do not have to pull the flags down due to federal law. The law though says that any previous or similar US flags must be put down every night. The real reason is that mainstreet is based in the late 1890s or early 1900s when the US had 48 stars. So why doesn't disneyland put those flags down? Because it would cost a lot of money and the govt doesnt enforce the law. Why did this false fact come around? Because disney doesn't want to piss of military personal or vets who aren't bothered enough to look up the law. Honestly I'm a USMC vet and I really don't care if any private business doesn't put down the flag every night but it's pretty nice that disney does the ceremony everyday.

Some years ago, I happened across an unauthorized biography that alleged Disney was not born in 1901 - but 1891. In it, his birth mother was said to have been of Mexican/Spanish descent and Walt was the product of a tryst his father had had with this woman while working as a carpenter on the 1893 Columbian Exhibition in Chicago. Apparently, Disney - during his lifetime - was never able to furnish a birth certificate verifying his date of birth - and to some, he apparently looked darker skinned enough than his other Disney siblings. Outside of this book, I've not been able to find any other independent source to back up these findings, so I dunno. I suppose it's the peculiarities of the man, his art and his organization that spawn such speculative details ... 🤔

The way I remembered reading it, was that, Walt' wife actually saw the picture of Mickey Mouse that somebody had drawn and SHE was the one who pushed both Disney and Ira to pursue and make Mickey the star. Because she felt and thought, correctly, that mouse would be thought of as more "cute and cuddly" to most people. I don't have a source for that, but I DO remember reading that many years ago, though and that sounds about right to me, at least. :)

The best-known artist and writer of those books was Carl Barks (1901-2000), who is also credited as having created Scrooge McDuck. It's interesting that reading those books with adult eyes I find them intriguing and not at all embarrassing kid stuff. A head concussion that turned Donald into a super-genius was even recorded (well, one panel anyway) in Morrison and Boyd's college textbook on organic chemistry.

He was never in the Navy. He was once in the Red Cross, as a teenager, at the end of WWI. At one point, he was court marshalled because he and another guy were given an errand that took them to some outpost or something, and the guy told Walt to wait there and he'd be back after completing the mission, I guess he was older or more superior idk. But anyway this guy then went on a 3 day bender leaving Walt at this post. After 2 days, Walt finally abandoned his post and walked into town where he got a room and slept for an entire day. He was court marshalled for leaving his post. But once he told them what had happened, they dropped the charges. That is where the dishonorable discharge myth actually comes from. If you want, you can look it up literally... anywhere. Google is free.
