    I don't know what chart you looked at but when hardened properly to specs, Magna Cut far out last s45v in edge retention.
    When it first came out, and still to today, many manufacturers/makers are running Magna Cut at 58-60 HRc. It is designed to be run at HRc 63-64 and when this is done, it far exceeds s45v.
    Remember, s30v was replaced by CRK because it was a little chippy. (when improperly used) so they heat treated it at a low number. The replacement was s35v which did not have the edge retention of s30v. That and they ran it low in hardness as well. . Many complained at the lack of performance. They switched to s45v and ran it a little harder to help with the issue, however it still did not equal the edge retention of the original s30v. None of these are capable of matching Magna Cut in edge holding when properly heat treated and as a bonus is much tougher.

      Yeah, but sadly it’s rare to get good magnacut at 63-64. As far as playing the odds, S45VN might be a safer bet in some instances.
      But yeah you’re right, when magnacut is done properly it kicks ass! I’m blown away by the magnacut on my Roosevelt

    I just got me a PJ magnacut Seb 31 large - so happy with it. I've used my small Seb31 inlay w/magnacut as EDC for a year and it has been a beast of a blade. Cuts and cuts and comes back just as you show here on my suede strop loaded w/white bark river chalk to razor edge. My other 120 knives have been sidelined by this magnacut small seb so I got the large to see if I can give the small a rest. MAGNACUT FOR THE WIN.

    The factory Sebenza edge is convex. It will get thinner BTE and more slicey as you sharpen it. If you run your finger and thumb down the hollow towards the edge you can feel it gets slightly thicker just before the edge bevel.

    The sentiment for not enjoying carrying knives that don’t slice well I share. I had tried to give the XM-18 some chances; eventually leading from a regular spearpoint one to the a skinny slicer grind one. And even the skinny slicer XM-18 had trouble cutting through the most pedestrian of things. Sold it and don’t think I’ll give any of em another chance. I know this is a CRK video but I had to mention this since the Xm-18 and Sebenza are usually brought up in the conversation of great American knives.

    • @doodysdaggers
      @doodysdaggers  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I felt the same way about the XM18. But I love the knife! So I sent it to BGM Knives to get reground. He did an amazing job, but a nice hollow grind on it.
      So that’s always an option if you love the knife but wish it was slicier

    Mine, (Sebenza 31 Magnacut, Macassar Ebony, Drop point), wasn't sharp when I got it new....(it would slice 'puter paper, but that was it), so I put a 20 Degree edge on it With the new Worksharp Pro Precision Adjust machine, and HOLY CRAPPAGE ! it will now easily slice phonebook paper, and shave your arm dry.....Huge Difference.....went to 800 grit, then a few strokes with the Ceramic on each side, (4-5), then stropped it LIGHTLY, (3-4 strokes), each side and it's Literally RAZOR sharp !......OnWard.......

    Besides Spyderco, CRK does the best factory edges in the business in my experience. Their convex edge is nasty and will hold for a long time in either S45VN or MC. I’ve carried a large plain Jane 21 s35vn drop point for the past 11 years. Just finally sold it and switched to a large 31 tanto carbon fiber Magnacut. Edge retention I don’t notice a lock of a difference. But it’s an ounce lighter and won’t corrode on the salt water. Not a huge fan of the ceramic ball lock interface but so far it’s good.
