    Just to be clear, the issue with Freire and Argerich is that Freire gives a head cue that is twice faster than the actual pulse of the music. The music is in cut time with half notes, and he is giving a quarter note pulse. The "prep" before the empty downbeat must be a full half note, not a quarter note. That's why Argerich jumps in. (Luckily. in the second one they managed to synch up.). Lugansky is humorously described as giving the "world's longest nod", but he's actually doing it exactly correctly and clearly. You need to feel that full half bar, and then the jolt of the downbeat.

    Argerich didn't understand all of this work. Ashkenazy and Previn > Argerich and Freire.
