37:00 Nice for them (clerics) to have a finally find a home because they don't have a dedicated tribal commander for themselves Orah, Skyclave Hierophant: Am I a joke to you?
I'm 1:43 into the show and super excited as I love making a non-traditional "tribal" deck. Almost all of my decks are some wonky version of tribal-themes.
There isn't a great Golem Tribal commander yet, so for now I have to go with Roon of the Hidden Realm, in order to include all of the Splicers, and best put to use their ETB Golem production.
Armix, Filigree Thrasher and Ich-Tekik, Salvage Splicer ended up being one of my limited decks from commander legends. I really liked the idea of a golgari golem tribal pair and these were a blast to play there and made me consider brewing a full commander deck with them
I like the idea of having Purphoros as the goblin commander and Thassa as the Wizard one, that’s a neat approach to swap the god card you wanna draw the most with the “normal” tribal commander (Krenko, Azami etc)
When I built my Samurai tribal commander I wanted something in Naya colors because I wanted access to green for Isao. Ended up with Johan from Legends because he can give them all vigilance letting me get use out of the Bushido ability on offense and defense.
Talking about tribes with no commanders to them, I have a mono-green Wurm tribal deck (one of my favorite tribes since I started playing in Ice Age), with Goreclaw on the helm, which works pretty well reducing the overly costed wurms, and also giving them trample.
@@CrabBaskets Yeah, Grothama is a wurm, but it doesn't help the tribe at all. I got so sad when I saw the spoiler for it at the time. Grothama is way better in the 99.
Clerics do have a dedicated legend now. Its Orah. And I can tell you that Thantis is a better tribal commander than you'd expect. Someone in my group plays it. The forced combat mixes well with having a board that is very hard to attack into profitably (they usually have reach and high toughness). Not ideal but its more than nothing!
Hidden Tribal Decks are among my favorites to build. My two most played hidden tribes are my Taisigur, Hidden Fang Demon Tribal Deck and My Kwain, Irretant Meddler Wizard deck. My Tasigur deck definitely is more tribal of the two, and I love the opponents reactions when I play a rakshasa :)
I have a Merfolk Tribal Orvar deck in which I focus on cloning Merfolk lords. Its rlly powerful. I also have a Mimeoplasm Ooze deck with that secret lair. :)
My 1st deck ever was a mono black zombie tribal with Korlash, Heir to Blackblade as the general. The deck had all the graveyard/draw engines and tribal synergies you'd expect but Korlash was a general damage threat by himself that got bigger as the game went on, was hard to kill because he regenerates and he benefited from that tribal synergy (esp the swampwalk). The deck could function and do zombie things really well all by itself but Korlash was an excellent plan B if it wasn't working out or the yard got nuked. The techy tribal generals are certainly neat but sometimes a beatstick that fits in the tribe is exactly want you want for those kinds of decks to help close out games. TBH that approach to a tribal deck was so versatile that it really shaped what I look for when I build a commander deck: Something with a ton of synergy, multiple win cons and works with the general, but doesn't break down without it.
Funny this topic came up. I'm currently helping a friend build a Shadowborn Apostles deck. He didn't have a commander picked yet, and I wanted to help him build something that wasn't just another Athreos deck, so he let me pick Kaalia the Vast as the commander. Since both Kalia and the apostles just happen to both be human clerics, the demons (and a few angels) are also clerics. BOOM! Cleric tribal...somehow...
I made a spellshaper deck around Kenrith, because he was 5 color and the entire deck focuses on activated abilities so he sort of fit. It turned out to be a super fun, weird, unique deck that managed to do pretty well
I have a maesltrom wanderer deck that I keep rebuilding just to switch things up. And I once built it as an elemental tribal (before the other omnaths came out) and also once as a dragon tribal deck. I also used to have an Intet dragon tribal, because she lets me cheat costs, and also all cards were featuring a dragon (either dead or alive) in their art.
Also used syg as a commander for a discard, return to hand deck. To use as an engine. But also dismantled because ppl didn't like and games would go on for hours (win condition was tough. I'd lock all other players for a few turns, but usually couldn't win before one escaped. So, hours of slow grinding)
There is a dedicated Angel commander that has a the right colors. There are two problems with it: 1) It also has the words "Demon" and "Dragon" on it. 2) It's been hated out of the social contract for reasons that go beyond Angel Tribal. That said, my Angel deck uses Gisela as the Commander because Angels is a slow clunky tribe that needs help actually winning, and Gisela is the best way in the tribe to actually assemble a lethal threat.
I was thinking of doing a Marisi and I noticed that there was a number landwalk creature that were cats, so I would make it tribal since that makes it easier to search for more cards
This is my absolute favorite way to build tribal decks. Almost all my decks are tribal and they mentioned at least 3 I currently run. Who needs competitive magic when your deck Is full of flavor
My personal metric for tribal is 60% or more creature production or support makes it a tribal deck. Creature production being not just creature spells but any spell that can produce tokens or find or reanimate them. Support being spells that care about them. For example, Dragonmaster Outcast would be considered Dragon Tribal as would Crucible of Fire. The way I see it, if 30% of your deck is built with it, it's a subtheme and supportive elements. If 40% - 50% it's a light theme or a gimmick or a secondary strategy. But 60% and over, that's a lot of dedication and thus tribal.
Unrelated to the topic at hand. How can I get my decks to show up in EDHREC? I went from tappedout to arkidekt so that I could add to the stats, but when I search decks I own with unique cards in them, there's no decklists found.
I feel like Thassa, Deep-Dwelling with Wizards was also influenced by one of the Command Zone episodes Also, I've been wanting a Phoenix deck for the longest time, staring at Purphoros, Bronze-Blooded for that, some return to the battlefield, some just get sent back to your hand
Of course people are doing knight tribal for Kenrith... He's the MTG King Arthur. That said should make sure Emry is included in there, gotta have the Lady of the Lake in there.^^ Would also recommend an equipment sub theme.
I love seeing atla get love since she’s my favorite commander, but I was sad that she only go love for Dinos. I current have “3” atla tribal decks. Wurms, Dragons, and Dinosaurs.
It might be too obvious but my Grenzo, Dungeon Warden deck is really a goblin deck with Grenzo shenanigans and some graveyard/library manipulation. I love to see my opponents faces when the goblin lords come out at the end of their turn from the bottom of my library.
I built a muldrotha zombies deck because it's amazing at getting things out of the graveyard and I wanted to give it a theme. My favorite card is elemental bond. And if you pair a zombie lord and create any zombie at all you draw a card
For me Thassa, Deep-Dwelling turned into a wizzard tribal deck due to naban (the wizzardharmonicon) that automatically pushed me to play more wizzards. ;)
Just statistical feedback, I would like to see the number of decks represented as a percent. It would give me a better idea of the ratio of players using the cmder as tribal to not
I wanted to make Angel tribal recently, but I've noticed they just don't have the kind of internal synergy that vampires and elves seem to, nor tribal spells. They just benefit from the standard banners and lord effects, rather than caring about each other than Righteous Valkyrie. I find that a real shame, because it would be a very fun tribe with just a little more internal cohesion.
I have a Thrasios (yes I know he's great with everything) and Alena as my Temur dragon tribal and was thinking Alena by herself as a dragon tribal commander would be really good.
When you mention "Commanders that support Hydras", stop and think for a second how many commanders ACTUALLY mention Hydras. The answer is........one. Gargos, Vicious Watcher is actually the only CARD in the game that directly benefits Hydras. Sure, Zaxara makes Hydra tokens, but those tokens could honestly be Plant tokens and it wouldn't make much of a difference, since the deck is more about X spells using Zaxara as a mana source. "Hydra synergy" has traditionally (like Rosheen) been X and +1/+1 counter synergy. Even Gargos' cost reduction will often be going into making an "XGG" costed creature bigger. Not that you've implied Rosheen was bad or anything, but in that light; she seems a perfectly good option for any Hydra deck wanting to dip into Red, rather than a "Legacy holdover".
I’ve been annoying the hell out of my playgroup with my “you may play any number of this card” tribal decks. Marchesa Black Rose + Rat Colony, Chulane + Persistent Petitioners, Phenax + Persistent Petitioner, Kriik + Shadowborn Apostle. Been keeping them on their toes with annoyance and solid win percentages.
I have a "Colorless" Kruphix Eldrazi deck, which was the second deck I ever built, and it was kind of built as a happy accident. I started playing around Shadows Over Innistrad, so I had a bunch of Eldrazi cards, some of which had blue/green from Eldrich Moon, and I liked the Theros Gods, so I just went with Kruphix. Honestly, I didn't understand what the mana part meant, and just liked the no hand size limit (one less thing for a new player to worry about). After someone explained it to me, I was like "Oh... OH! That is actually really good for Eldrazi". Not to mention, having mostly colorless creatures, Kruphix was rarely ever a creature, and turns out an indestructible enchantment is rather annoying to try and get rid of.
Ayara Zombies. It looks like an aristocrats deck, but really I'm just going to slam zombies into people's faces. Having the option to do a bit of drain is helpful for that last little bit of damage sometimes.
One thing I realized while building my Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose is there's A LOT of vampire tribal for that commander, mostly because some vampires care for life gain in general.
I wanted a kamigawa golgari spirits so I just used golgari partners. Though a spirit partner with kamigawa flavor has recently been printed. But I dismantled it
Liesa is really good doing non tribal things. If plan A fails then you can keep recasting her giving you at least something. I made Liesa into a Pestilence deck, most of my cards are in just 1 of her decks on EDH rec lol.
I want to make a Rakdos Cleric tribal deck. I'd call it Judith's Priests.
Matt: "Miri definitely fits into that category" Me: "Hehe CATegory "

My Dalakos deck is slowly becoming Myr tribal - mana rocks that can swing swords
That honestly sounds super fun and made me want to build it, enjoy bud!
Lol I'm actually building urza as meme myr tribal
I used to have a Karona the False God "God"/"Avatar" tribal deck. It used all the devotion gods and the hybrid 5-color avatars. It was kinda fun!
