It wound up winning four Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director for Eastwood, denying "The Aviator" and Martin Scorsese his first win. The Sideways dismissing is CRAZY!! It's legitimately one of the 5 best movies since 2000. It only gets better with age. Sure it's not one that would have won Best Picture, but dang guys! Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was so good
Almost a perfect movie for a thinking person. Maybe went over the heads of Academy But Being John was embraced and, to me, that was a bit more out there.
Last minute KO to Annette Benning again as well. Yay for Swank for deserved but shucks Annette.
2004 produced two brilliant films, "Sideways" and "Eternal Sunshine", that should have divided the top eight prizes. Michael Mann produced a technical masterpiece in "Collateral"; one of the great 21st century neo-noirs. Where was the cinematography nomination? And it should have won editing. I am OK with Clint's wins this year. "The Aviator" is an intermittently interesting, consistently beautiful film but - were it to be Scorsese's crowning Oscar achievement - it would stand out in film history as something that would need multiple sentences of explanation. Fast-forward to "The Departed". Was that Scorsese's finest honour? Of course not. Was it a movie that displayed the essence of Scorsese? Absolutely. Returning to "Million Dollar Baby"; it might not be regularly returned to, and it's not a re-watchable, but Joyce nailed it (doesn't she always), it was hot at the time and, beyond that, it did play with gender roles and sports movies in a way that is too often forgotten. If it was a two-horse race, I think the right film won. If it was an open field, my split vote is "Sideways" and Gondry.

Replying to myself (oh dear) - I watched "Million Dollar Baby" three times in the cinema. I wept every time. Whatever "it" is, Clint can bottle it and sell it to the masses.
Annette Benning having a shot. It was a different time there on the web and Benning led the odds the ENTIRE year until the little movie that did was released in December. FACT. And I'm not an Annette lover or anything but that year it was the irony of Swank AGAIN knocking her down. Repeat Statement Sorry.
Finding Neverland. Only known for the ending that became a meme
I will admit I own the score to Finding Neverland. I got it because it makes a good background for studying, not because it's noteworthy. Had it been, I probably would've found it too distracting.
Loved the shout out to "Accidentally in Love." Great song, still listen to it. I'm not as mad about it losing as "That Thing You Do!", but I do wish it had.
I vividly remember the conversations back in the day about whether Hilary Swank “deserved” to be a 2 time oscar winner that early in her career. I was in the ‘No’ column back in the day. Has time proved us right?
Of course, as film buffs, you surely know and slightly honor Siskel and Ebert who ALWAYS had taken issue with Best Song nominees and wins. One year on their 'if we picked the winners' tv show, Siskel picked No Winner for he thought they All sucked. Some things never change. Hi, Diane Warren.

Great video! I’m a Cate Blanchett fan, but I remember so wishing that Virginia Madsen would win (and I’m not even the biggest fan of Sideways). I still think that that should have been her win

Calling an obviously bad movie a classic because you were a kid when it came out... hurts your credibility when you quickly disregard other well respected movies.
