    I did a double feature of Pearl and Barbarian at the movies this year and can’t imagine how that would have impacted me if I loved them as much as you did lol. I liked Pearl and while I thought Barbarian was certainly a crazy first watch by the end I wasn’t loving it. I just didn’t love the tone of the second half. Especially in the last 20 minutes or so. Also Watcher was absolutely incredible to me I loved the tension and thought it was a near perfect thriller tbh.

    You are absolutely correct about No Exit. The book is significantly better, with Hitchcockian levels of tension basically from beginning to end. And the end is so much better. I'd also recommend Hairpin Bridge, by the same author.

A lot of these criticisms are just like “it was weird,” or, “yeah -- I don’t get it.” You have a quarter million subs and I’d think you’d want to actually offer people some interesting insights/observations. • @kristopherschermerhorn998
      @kristopherschermerhorn998 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      The lack of character development on “The Grabber” was 💯 intentional. The director has even mentioned it in interviews. I’m personally glad they didn’t get us any information on The Grabber. It wasn’t necessary to the film and makes him a scarier villain. Giving him a backstory would humanize a character that is a monster. And I don’t know how you felt like you walked into the middle of the film. The film has a very strong introduction that establishes Finn, his friends, and his family…with the introduction of the Grabber as he is slowly taking kids. My biggest issue with the film is most of the stuff in the basement. It just felt very repetitive and it felt like a waste of a really good premise. I wish they had done more with the supernatural and Black Phone element of the film. But, I still really enjoyed the film overall.

    Watcher really really got under my skin! It could have been another woman in the window movie, but the way it really makes the character (and the viewer) feel so isolated, and the really dark, disturbing way the victims are described really just had me chilled all over.
    Favorite horror film of the year is Barbarian, and it's also in my top 3 films of the year.
    It's a very difficult film to watch (content warning for sexualized and racialized violence) but Soft & Quiet is by far the most disturbing film I saw this year and if you can stomach it I think it's a very effective film with an important message.
    My least favorite horror films this year were Men and Bones and All. Men was stylistically very interesting (and it turned me on to Leslie Duncan which is a plus; thanks Men!) but the actual message of the film felt so basic and boring, but delivered in an absurdly convoluted and gross way. Bones and All just pissed me off so much. People are hailing it as a modern horror masterpiece and to me it's just high brow Twilight with cannibals. Also I take issue with the way it depicts queerness with cannibalism as a really miscalculated metaphor.

For my least favorites of the year from best to worst are Texas Chainsaw Massacre, My Best Friend’s Exorcism, Choose or Die, Halloween Ends, and then Dead Stream (the guy was just too annoying).
