    I love Man O' War more than air. He was, and still is, magic. I am all about high class, blue blood, cocky, full of themselves horses. Man O' War and his owner (though Sam wasn't cocky) were all that. Love it.
    But thank you for that, it means a lot.

    I have been on the fence for 10 years as to who was the greater horse, Man O' War or Secretariat. But when all is said and done, I believe Man O' War was for two reasons. One, he didn't have the advantage of a starting gate, modern shoes and tracks, which were speed favoring. Yet he set records and dominated the era. Secondly, the quality of his progeny sets him apart from Secretariat. Man O' War was the sire of War Admiral, another great horse. It's a close call, but I have decided finally.

    • @TimesUp777
      @TimesUp777 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I dont think having a starting gate is any advantage. Using a tape for the starting gate in Man O Wars days may have been an advantage because the horses were not sitting still before they started running. How do you know that the tracks back then were not as fast as the tracks in Secretariat's day? There is no way to measure that and its very hard to compare horses when they raced 40 years apart. They were both the GOATS.

      @@Psyfi85 that is the best way to look at it. People can argue who was the greatest until they are blue in the face and nobody will ever win the argument.

      Man O War was absolutely a great racehorse but if you research his races you will find he faced short fields and inferior competition. This is not an attempt to diminish his accomplishments it was not his fault that the competition was poor and most owners would not run their horses against him. The best horse he faced was Sir Barton whom he defeated handily in a match race. Again I am not trying to belittle him he was far and away the best horse of his time and it is impossible to say how he would have faired against the likes of Dr.Fager , Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Kelso and a host of other modern day racehorses who faced much better and larger fields. I don't question his greatness but I do question people who say he was the best ever.

    • @jasonwiggins6137
      @jasonwiggins6137 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@jameskeeney2032 You have to look at all of the evidence. There's a reason why, even to this day almost 100 years later, the majority of racing experts still side with Man O War. His level of competition is debatable for several reasons. Horse racing at this time was the third most popular sport behind Baseball and Boxing. There were more race tracks then, more race horses, and more trainers then there are today. Horse racing has been on the decline for several decades now. Sir Barton lost credibility because of his loss to MOW, but Sir Barton had just broken a World Record several days before their match race. The lack of "big name" thoroughbreds is because he destroyed them. Secretariat for instance, had Sham as a rival because Sham had beaten him prior to the Triple Crown races. Everyone knew Upset beating Man O War was a fluke, hence no rivalry and Upset doesn't become one of the greats like many people believe Sham was.

    • @jameskeeney2032
      @jameskeeney2032 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jason Wiggins I am not attempting to shortchange Man O War he was hands down the greatest racehorse of his time. You are wrong about the amount of race horses competing at this time it was post WW1 and breeding was very low and the number of horses racing was also very.low. Man O War may well have beaten the best of modern horses that it an argument that can never be settled. It is totally an opinionated subject and every horse racing fan has their own personal preference. I respect your opinion one can only wonder. James Keeney

I've viewed all the great horses and physically, Man O' War and Secretariat had the most massive (and impressive) builds for racing. They were both physically perfect. Secretariat had something even more special...an enlarged heart that allowed him to increase his speed during a race...no other horse in history has ever matched this feat. @@TimesUp777 It was not a match race. Man O' War was running really well and had easily beaten the American record for a mile and a half in a workout days before the race (carrying 130 pounds), scaring away all but one horse, War Mint. Then the owner of War Mint decided to withdraw him only one hour before the race. Back then, if only one horse ran, the purse was cut in half. So Mr. Riddle's niece entered her horse Hoodwink to prevent that. He wasn't very good and had run the day before so the 100 lengths isn't that big a deal. What was a big deal was that running on his own and with instructions not to push him, he broke the American record by over 4 seconds and the world record by 1 3/5 seconds

This includes 5 TCW's and almost every horse that won two legs of the TC. Fair Play was the sire of Man O War and probably the best sire ever. My great great great grandparents love this horse. What a career and what an awesome racehorse. He and Secretariat share the bloodline of Fair Play,who sired MOW. I dont mind if Sec lost to MOW in the ranking of the greatest racehorses.They share the same bloodline anyway. What is sad though is, everytime i see a list of top sires, I dont see Fair Play in the list.I see Bold Ruler,Seattle Slew, Nasrullah. Slew came from Bold Ruler line and Bold Ruler came from Fair Play too. Seabiscuit was also a grandson of Fair Play.Why is this great sire ignored in those lists?

    • @kimkearney5419
      @kimkearney5419 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Smogger911 nonsense. Its because Fair Play blood is so diluted that it is effectively gone. Just see what happens in 50 years from now with your precious Native Dancer. He already is obsolete. No one cares, you have to breed to living stallions. With each breeding, a stallion somewhere back on the papers becomes less and less viable. This is just a fact.

    I watched Secretariat when he ran and a couple of times was privileged to see him run in person. Among the other horses he looked so much heavier then the rest. Watch any of his races. Just notice the thickness of his neck next to the other horses. He looks like a horse who has been retired a few years. Just bigger but definitely muscular.

      @@brocklanders6969 You'll have to do better than that. He didn't race the triple crown, but he destroyed the triple crown winner Sir Barton just weeks after Barton broke a World Record. Man O' War retired with more track records, American records, and World Records than the smaller, slower, and the horse with a shorter stride, Secretariat. Also, shoes were lighter, tracks were significantly faster, and steroids were prevalent by the 70's. Secretariat also lost five races and was nothing compared to Man O' War's stud record. Almost every American Thoroughbred comes from Man O' War including multiple triple crown winners. There is absolutely NO contest and these and many other reasons are why the vast majority of horse racing experts named Man O' War Horse of the Century. FACTS. Try again.

    When a racehorse dies, the tradition is that his head, heart, and hooves are buried in a box. But Man-o-war was granted the rare honor of being buried as a whole horse. Incidentally, his heart was about twice as large as that of other racehorses. It was the most important "extra" he possessed, besides his will to win.

    To this day...only 2 horses were physically in a different league than all other race horses....Man O' War & Secretariat. They were far superior in build and muscle tone. Facially, Man O' War was handsome. Secretariat was absolutely breath-taking. When you compare their physiques to all other race horses throughout history, it's not even close. Man O' War & Secretariat stood out from the rest. Still do:-)

    Just for the record, Dr. Thomas Swerczek, head pathologist at the University of Kentucky, performed a necropsy on Secretariat and on Sham. Sham's heart was 18 pounds (8.2 kg). Based on Sham's measurement, and having necropsied both horses, he estimated that Secretariat's heart probably weighed 22 pounds (10.0 kg),[9] or about two-and-a-half times as large as that of the average horse.

    • @riannekuilder7374

      He won the triple crown, MOW did not (he never ran the Derby), and Sec won the last Triple Crown race with 33 lengths.
      I think that they are equally good, however! Secretariat was still charging at the finish, so we might never know how fast he could run. Then again, we don't know how fast MOW can run either, so nobody can tell for sure who would win.

    • @jasonwiggins6137
      @jasonwiggins6137 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@riannekuilder7374 Sorry, 33 lengths is quite short of Man O' War's 100 length (a quarter mile) victory. Hall of Fame trainer Elliott Burch said that Steroids became a part of Thoroughbred racing in the mid 60's. By the 70's, it was prevalent in all horses. That's the deciding factor if anything. Even after the crackdown in 2008, certain forms of Steroids are still allowed to this day. It was impossible for Citation and Man O'War to have used, they were pure Thoroughbreds. Sir Barton faced accusations of cocaine use, but there is absolutely no evidence of it. Maybe one day we'll see horse racing become drug free again, but I doubt it.
