    I got to see this documentary when it first came out years ago before I got to read the book or see the movie.
    I remember when the match race started I got up out of my chair and was screaming at the TV for Seabiscuit to win!
    I didn't know the outcome so I was just like everyone else in the crowd. I've seen plenty horse races since but nothing compares to this🤯

      Seabiscuit was SO FAST, that the trainer told Wolf, "Let War Admiral catch up to him, than in the final turn, leave him in the dust." That race was War Admiral's FASTEST recorded race he's EVER ran, and yet 'Seabisquit' STILL won by 4-lenght's.

    The hero of a lifetime. Seabiscuit a horse of a lifetime. Had hard times before. No one wanted him all said he was a waste of time. Then came proper people who understood this boy . Historic times ahead . Seabiscuit never looked back. A National hero came along .

    I always wondered if Red Pollard's racing advice to George Woolf was contrived simply to dramatize the movie. So good to know that it was true. I'm sure it's one of the few times that Georgie took advice from anyone, especially for such an important race, and especially from a claimer jock like Pollard. What an astounding moment in racing history!

      With all due respect, why do people hold Seabiscuit in such high regard? He ran in 88 races and finished out of the money in 39 of them. Honestly, even if you completely took out the 39 out of the money races, a 33-15-1 record isn’t very good compared to the truly great horses like Man o War, Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Affirmed, Zenyatta and many others that I could look up.
      Every poll lists him fairly up in terms of best of all time (like top 25 at least) so what am I missing?

I’ve watched videos of that race and as far as I can remember Seabiscuit was never further back than 4th or 5th and that was early in the race - he certainly wasn’t last for more than a couple of yards.

    Right, War Admiral is a son of Man O'War, and Seabiscuit is a son of Hardtack who was also a son of Man O'War. Seabiscuit was a grandson of Man O' War. Seabiscuit was born May 23 1933. War Admiral was born in 1934 (couldn't find exact date). So yes, Seabiscuit was the older horse.

    Man o' War, War Admiral, Sea Biscuit and Secretariat all have a common ancestor. "Fair Play" a chestnut colt from 1905 is in the bloodline of all these horses and probably many other fine horses. I just happened to check these 4.

    • @1MrVIewer
      @1MrVIewer 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      just checked a few more.
      Spectacular Bid, Seattle Slew, Affirmed, Kelso, Native Dancer, Damascus, also have "Fair Play" in their blood line. These are most of the great thoroughbreds in history. The only great horse that I cant tie into all the other greats is Citation.

    • @rainymoon9848
      @rainymoon9848 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      1MrVIewer Yep, pretty much most, if not all, of the legendary greats are descended from Fair Play, through Man o' War, Bold Ruler, and/or Native Dancer. The Fair Play grandson, Discovery, was the damsire of both Bold Ruler and Native Dancer. There were three particular pedigree crossings that seemed to worked really well with the Fair Play line. 1) One was Fair Play paired with mares who were daughters or granddaughters of Rock Sand. Man o' War's mother, Mahubah (aka Fair Play's "wife"), was a daughter of Rock Sand. 29.6% of the 81 foals that were by Fair Play out of a Rock Sand mare ended up stakes winners. 24 is a really good number, because 51 of the foals were fillies and August Belmont II didn't tend to race most of them. Natalma (Northern Dancer's dam, and Nashua (Mr. Prospector's damsire) are two of the descendant's of a (non-Mahubah) Fair Play/Rock Sand pedigree cross. 2) The second particularly successful pedigree crossing was when two of Fair Play's strongest descendants, Man o' War (son) and Discovery (grandson), were paired with Sweep descendant mares. Sweep was a son of Ben Brush and a grandson of Domino. The Man o' War and Brushup (daughter of Sweep) pairing produced War Admiral. When Discovery (Fair Play's grandson) was paired with Sweep descendant mares, the results were the dams of Bold Ruler and Native Dancer. 3) War Admiral ended up being paired frequently with the daughters of the French mare, La Troienne, of the famous Teddy line (Sir Gallahad, one of Teddy's sons was the sire of Gallant Fox. Bull Dog, another of Teddy's sons, was the grandsire of Citation). That produced Busher (the filly who was the 1945 Horse-of-the-Year), Striking (Busher's full sister), and Busanda. Busher and Striking are antecedents of Seattle Slew. Busanda was Buckpasser's dam. Busher and Striking's dam, Baby League, was also a Sweep descendant mare. So that was another instance of one of Fair Play's strongest descendants being paired with a Sweep mare to great results. Sweep, himself, was the damsire of 2 Triple Crown winners: War Admiral and Whirlaway. Busanda wasn't the daughter of a Sweep's descended mare, though, she (Businesslike) was a descendant of the Peter Pan/Domino line. Businesslike's sire, Blue Larkspur, was a very successful tail-male descendant of Domino both as a racer (3 championships - including HOY) and at stud, as a sire and broadmare sire.

    A lot of thing can be said about Seabiscuit when you compare him to man o' war/secretariat/war admiral or even American Pharoah.
    But take into consideration THIS:
    Seabiscuit: 89: 33-15-1
    Man o' war: 21: 20-1-0
    War admiral: 26: 21-3-1
    Secretariat: 21:16-3-1
    Yes.. it talk volumes about that "little" horse and the size of his heart, figuratively and literally, they showed him love and he showed them his speed.

      @dfadden62  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can you explain what these codes mean?

    • @franciskuntz8899
      @franciskuntz8899 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello,
      Seabiscuit example: 89 mean 89 races (starts) 33 wins, 15 place, 1->13 show.
      You can note that in 1935 Seabiscuit as a 2 years old horse was already 35 starts, more races than the entire career of war admiral.

      Thanks for explaining. Another horse that raced his heart out for 9 years and ran 100 races is Exterminator. I hate how history seems to be forgetting about this amazing gelding who did so much more than anyone thought he would.

      @@franciskuntz8899 also meant, that it was forced, more than a yearling should've. It would broken a horse that have not develop completely to be treated that way. Fitz really hated Seabiscuit, isn't he?

  • @dfadden62
    @dfadden62  11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    He was shorter in the length of his back, but he was not a "lot shorter" in his height than War Admiral. Seabiscuit was 15 hands. War Admiral was 15.3 hands. I believe that makes War Admiral only 3 inches taller than Seabiscuit. Even Man O War was not "18 hands" like the movie claims War Admiral was. Man O War was 16.2 hands.

    • @kwgrid
      @kwgrid 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think they call that a short-coupled horse. Secretariat was like that. Bard breed horses are short-coupled and are known for being able to carry a lot of weight. Woolf or Pollard on Seabiscuit might have been next to nothing for him. Even adding 15lbs to him in one of his races (can't remember which one) didn't seem to bother him.

    Man O' War would have obliterated War Admiral. Not sure about Seabiscuit because as you say, the horse ran on heart. But something tells me the Biscuit would have done himself serious physical harm running against Big Red, trying to win. I don't think he could have won. Imagine Seabiscuit racing the likes of Secretariat. It would be about as difficult for the little guy.

  • @dfadden62
    @dfadden62  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    They were born one year apart. I believe all thoroughbreds, regardless of what time of year they are born, share the same birth month (not remembering right now when that is). So yes, it is possible War Admiral could be considered two years younger than Seabiscuit by racing standards. But by the calendar he is just one year older than War Admiral.

    My horse decends from Storm Cat, Secretariat, Native Dancer, Danzig, Man O War & War Admiral. just to name a few...When he runs he looks exactly like War Admiral..At the time War Admiral had the best possible bloodline...A racehorse couldn't get any better than him. ..He won 20 of 21 races...but Seabiscut was obviously a much better sprinter. He won fair & square.

      Sprinter? They raced 1 3/16 at the match race. I believe only the Belmont Stakes is a longer race at 1.5 miles. Yes there are bloodlines and all that, but Seabiscuit beat War Admiral by 3 lengths and set the track record at Pimlico doing it. It was not a sprint race.
