I spent 33 years working for Amtrak out of Salt Lake City. Most of the time it was as a night. So this makes me feel right at home. I’ve been wanting to go to Train Mountain, hope to meet up with you one day.
That would be great to see you there. This place attracts members from all over the country who visit when their schedules allow. We make a few visits a year and stay several days in a row to make the long trip worthwhile. We have already scheduled time for the big 2025 Triennial: June 21st (Saturday) thru June 29th (Sunday). If you see the Green Goose or the little 0-4-2T steamer in the yard, we are there!
I'm sensing some Stephen King kind of surprise out there on the track. 😂😂😂 Halloween would be awesome considering the place is so big and spread out. Or... Something along the lines of,OMG I've seen this movie before, it doesn't end well.
That would be fun to do a spook train night ride! I don't know if Train Mountain does them bcause it can get really cold at night this time of year, but I know Kitsap Live Steamers does them in Washington State near halloween. When I went a few years ago the depot was packed with hundreds of people riding any of several trains that were running that night. I think that was my first ride on 7.5" gauge trains.
G'day, I was at train mountain for the 2006 trianual meet with my Dad and a friend of ours Peter Laws and his model of an Australian XPT loco. I love watching these videos as they all seem to tigger some deep memory of my time there. I remember watching the tour part one and thinking to myself "damn, I can remember walking up that hill and I felt like I was going to pass out" closely followed by your commentary saying "thats cardiac hill". Its amazing to see the what's changed and whats the same. I only hope you'll keep uploading more of these videos!
@@TJJIM thanks! I'll keep taking video each time we go. That hill really got us in shape during the last triennial. We camped down in the meadow and hiked up there many times a day. By the last day it was no big deal.
@@ccootsona I feel like it's the elevation that catches visitors off their guard 😂 I'm looking forward to more videos! I'll be waiting for the 2.5 hour live steam tour all the way out to m&n corner and back to the yard! Just kidding haha, although I would definitely watch that whole video hahaha
Yes, it always takes me a day to acclimate to the 4200 foot elevation and low humidity. I might get the citrate to take the steamer out past M&M to Hope and back at triennial!
Magnificent catches aboard the model steam locomotive and see the line through the dark, i like it 5 stars. Thumbs up. Hearing that amazing puffing and chuffing is absolutely crazy. Keep up the perfect work, my friend, i just liked and subscribed your channel, Greetings from Portugal to the USA.
How cool to do a night trip! That's a pretty impressive set of light's on that thing. I am somewhat new to the channel so I don't know what kind of voltage you're running? If you have a video out that explains the mechanicals of that unit, I'd love to be steered that direction 🙂
Thanks. The lights and accessories run on 12V while the motor and controller run on 24V. Video on original build with old lead acid batteries is here: th-cam.com/video/vFp5BWOWdWM/w-d-xo.html I currently have two 50A/H lithium batteries wired up and a transformer to get the 12V off the two (better to draw evenly from both). Lights are from amazon, with mini hot dog cans epoxied to the back to make them look like old headlights: www.amazon.com/dp/B07YF3Z2SY/?coliid=I1DW072R4WY8NW&colid=YQWN9SMRRGCH&psc=1&ref_=list_c_wl_lv_ov_lig_dp_it The only down side is each LED bulb has its own parabolic reflector so the light is not focused and can blind oncoming trains. I aim them down to the ground to help. I'm thinking about getting a more focused LED light fixture that looks like an old truck light.
@@ccootsona I will have to go and check out that video. They definitely have a wide spread beam. I'm sure it's quite the project to find something that'll look period correct and be functional as well. Thank you for the reply. I will go and watch those videos now.
I really enjoyed watching the train videos on Train Mountain! I'd like you to give us some facts! As to where this is. Can someone ride the train that's not a member? If so how much is it? What's the schedule of operation. How many tracks and miles of railroad are there. Please.post a video on people's questions so. If possible we can enjoy a train ride also! Thanks again for the videos!❤
Thanks for the kind words. Train Mountain is located near Chiloquin, Oregon. The nearest larger city is Klamath Falls. Tours run daily from 10 to 3pm during the summer between Memorial Day and Labor Day. There is no charge, just a suggested donation. Info on tours is here: trainmountain.org/visit/ and you can also use links from that page to see the other related pages. The railroad has over 26 miles of track. I like the idea of posting a video about the location and statistics so I'll do that soon!
@@kylehc15 that would be a cool ride! In powder snow it would be a blast! The winters get pretty cold and snow can harden to ice so it can be difficult to break through without heavy power. And then the heavy power derails, making for a long day!
Hi from New Zealand . Just love watching the night rides, looks spooky when you're running down a single line through the trees . Love the sound of the train Bogges running over the diamond crossings and turnouts, do you have any double slip crossings on the different lines or right of way.? How many kilometers or miles of track are there?. I always find it interesting to be involved or see others working on their model railways at night and waking up the next morning to see what's changed on the modal railway. Are any of the track side buildings lighted either way looks cool . Neil Dimond songs remind me of the same from the early 70s .
Very nice video. Is it worth a visit in January with the weather possibilites and I'm guessing a reduced level of activity versus in the Summer? I have a trip up the 5 freeway and then out to the coast and was thinking to make a detour over there to see Train Mountain but at the same time dont want to drive all the extra miles if it wouldnt be much to see then. Thanks for any info.
Glad you liked it. It gets fairly cold there during the winter so activity is significantly reduced. Sometimes the snow locks things in for a while, and if it crusts over with ice, it's far to much work to run even short distances. They are at around 4200 feet so the weather can be pretty severe. Also, access via the highways can be difficult if the mountain passes are snowy. The typical operating season runs from April through the end of October so I would recommend a trip then. If you look at their schedule on the website, they list when the big meets happen (still need to update them for 2025) and those are when the best equipment shows up. The triennial is the big one and those dates are already listed here: trainmtn.org/tmrr/index.shtml We'll have the Green Goose, Poke' the steamer, and the all the rolling stock from my previous videos at that one. Some of the attending locomotives are equivalent in value to high end collector cars.
I found this in the visitor info website: trainmtn.org/pages/visitors-1.shtml HOURS - The Train Mountain railroad Museum is open to visitors 7 days a week from 9 am to 4 pm during our Summer schedule (April through October), and from 10 am to 2 pm during our Winter Sehedule (November through March).
@@LordPhobos6502 thank you! I've just been using my iPhone 11 to film everything. I haven't yet found a shock mount for the phone that's resistant to all the movement on the train so I've just been holding it in one hand which gets a little tiresome.
This is a video that I like. A night trip is also very nice.
Glad you enjoyed it!

If you increase the playback speed to ×2, it feels more like a high-er speed train, and the curves are more treacherous!😂👍

@ccootsona thanks very much . I'll just have to wait for another time I head up that way hopefully in the warmer months to pay a visit.
They also need a B&O Color Position Light with the full complement of sub lights.
I would bet the signal guys could install it if someone donated such a signal.
I'd have one installed if I had one!
