    Those kids at the end did a fine job on that SOAD song for a bunch of teenagers. In fact I'll be honest including clips of kids at talent shows and calling them the "worst bands" is patently ridiculous. They're learning. I've been a working musician for 25 years- I applaud any one that's got the guts to get up in front of people and try. If you're accepting money from a venue and delivering poorly played material that's another story.... This is akin to filming 9 year olds playing tee ball and titling the video "World's worst Athletes". Its kind of awful/meanspirited.

      Collin Madden well put. It's easy for those observing to rip on people but if they were up there they honestly wouldn't be doing any better. A little encouragement and support can go a long way! I have a friend who is a really good guitarist. He let me borrow his guitar and amp and said just mess around man, try to learn some scales. Shortly after that he bought me a guitar and amp! I'm not saying that I'm great but I definitely improved and I give a lot of the credit to him for motivating me and supporting it.

    • @johnconway82
      @johnconway82 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      They need friends/family/anyone who can provide some honest but badly needed feedback. Recording yourself is also a very easy but hugely important thing to do. Easy to deceive yourself into thinking you're Van Halen when you're too feet from your amp and the drummer is blowing out your ear on the other side.

    • @youthofyesterdayrecords
      @youthofyesterdayrecords 5 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Agreed, plus the awful quality of the recording can make it sound much worse than what the people in the venue heard. Entire frequencies are missing on the playback. I feel bad for the last band especially...to have to be undeservedly immortalized here in this corner of you tube.

      I so agree. I have been playing music a long time, and play regularly with very talented musicians. Every one of us did something like this when we were younger. It's how you get better. Mocking these kids is cruel and pointless.

    I've played professionally in gig bands. Some very simple rules: 1) be in tune; 2) know your part; 3) rehearse until you're tight. That's it.

    • @slupot
      @slupot 5 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      @@johnconway82 agreed. This is the outcome of giving everyone trophies as kids, even the losers. Tuning the guitars would help a lot. It's likely they cannot do it by ear, but electric tuners are cheap. Listen to yourself and your band play. Would you enjoy listening to that? Also, good friends wouldn't let them on stage to make fools of themselves.

    • @kevinconnor6035
      @kevinconnor6035 5 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      This is not the outcome of giving everyone trophies. That is a preposterous thing to say. Terrible teenage bands have been around forever. These kids are just learning how to play in band. They'll keep playing and they'll get better. Or they won't, and they'll stop. It's not like anyone in this video is going around demanding adulation or insisting on a record contract. These are local high school bands playing small venues and being filmed by amateurs. They probably filmed it for themselves and their families. Every musician I know did something like this in high school. We were probably all terrible. But we love music and we were having fun and people supported us. Then we got better. Now we are uncommonly good musicians who can learn difficult songs with little practice. And the few that continued to suck just gave it up and found other hobbies.
      Not everything on the internet is evidence in support of your facile worldview. Get over yourself. Kids can play music and have fun. That's what it's for.

      People tend to forget band rehearsal. A lot of noobs rehearse with a backing track and try to take it live. Its ok jam alone to albums I'm guilty but theres a lot of individual moving pieces to a band and without a constant schedule of practice together even the best will screw up.

      We all started somewhere. What I don't or fail to understand is why bands, before taking on a show, don't practice more often. Or am I one of the few when I was younger to realize that I didn't want to go on stage unprepared and look like a fool. Albeit that going on stage and playing bad is better than not playing at all, but I suppose it depends on the standards that each individual has on their performance. Thankfully, even my first show at my high school, sounded pretty good. Yes there were mistakes, but it was not a train wreck as everyone came to my place and practiced the songs until it was good enough to say, lets do this show. OK ok, it was only 2 songs, LOL. Seemed a little timid and lacked confidence at first but he went for it near then end and sounded quite good .

    To be FAIR, the kids doing Smells Like Teen Spirit are 1) not even teens yet themselves and 2) very much so not setup for success. The way they have it setup, it's impossible for the girl to hear herself, or the band behind her while she's singing. They probably did way better in rehearsal and learned on this day (as many of us have) that the situation you're in can dramatically change the way you're hearing yourself and the group. After a few of these you learn how to adjust to where you can at least hear yourselves. Good effort!

    After I switched to electric bass in high school I have no doubt a number of my bands would qualify for this video. Though the very act of performing for people drove me to become a better musician. And after all these years I admit I have a long way to go. I listen to Tal Winkelfeld, a 15 year old bassist who has played with Jeff Beck and I am humbled.
