He's just a record executive looking to recruit new pop stars, and when he sees someone he can't make quick money off he shoos them away. I would assume loved ones, although they are the last people one would want to hear it from lol. It takes some serious self-reflection to be able to tell yourself you are not good enough and some serious courage to pick yourself up and try to do better. Hope he obtained said courage and followed his heart as he was quite good despite the fact..
