This week on Upgrade My Stay we take on an old cabin that functions as a vacation rental! We were given the prompt of ‘millennial cottage’ and just went for a maximalist, eclectic vibe!! This is defiantly a style we haven’t done much of before, but it was so exciting trying something new and challenging ourselves! What kind of space will we take on next? Let us know your predictions below!

It’s my guess they’ve been doing it for so long they’ve mastered not getting it on their clothes!
My guess is they film one tiny minute of them doing something and their handyman crew comes in and finishes the jobs...like all the other home improvement shows.

@@karenbee1898 if you watch the videos, it's pretty clear it would be way more complicated to fake it... the amount of clips they show of them actually doing the work already takes a lot of time to film, it would make no sense to then spend the extra money on a painting crew, and the extra time and money and attention on hiding the whole thing.
@@karenbee1898they’ve also showed before that they do get paint on their clothing and just continue to wear it. They’ve said that they don’t want to give up wearing clothes they love just to wear more “disposable” clothing when painting so they just risk it and sometimes get paint on it

100% - fantastic start to the season
I'm so glad the dad was open to this change - actually a smart business decision too. I'm glad as a business owner he was willing to pivot and notice that his clientele might be changing. The room is a statement and will be noticed on social media and their advertising. Not every cabin needs to be this lux but it might give him the courage to attempt updating the other cabins in a more bold way. I'd totally stay here!

Honestly, I’m impressed by the quality of the production. You have the plot, the fun, the suspence (the missing paint)... and can we talk about the scenes around the campfire? It really looks like a movie! My compliments to everyone involved in this series (because it really is a series)!

Thats what I do every time! It is my God-given right to have wobbly and crooked DIYs.
Alternatively, you could wrap a bit of masking tape around the metal end to make it a little bigger so the tape measure doesn't get stuck hooked on to gaps and cracks.

This space was clearly very 70s, I loved the decision to embrace that, and bring forward that orange and brown combo that was so prevalent in that era, and the turquoise really helps to modernise it
Everyone complaining in the comment sections are boring and basic I think, lol Ive seen a lot of this style on tumblr in the past it just looks vintage
So beautiful! And I really love that there's more of the "behind the scenes" shots where we get to see more of the crew, putting on mics, talking about call times, and hanging out after set. It feels more intimate and relatable, and is a welcome change that more shows should do!
I love how open Bruce is to updating the design style of his cottages and growing his market :) I wish we could get more info about the businesses you are featuring though.

I really loved the Dad's reaction the most in this. He was so open to the changes made to the space and his reaction was so sweet to watch.
We were the first to stay in this cabin since the reno. I have to say it was absolutely amazing. Definitely more of a retro feel! The living room was very comfortable and welcoming. Watched movies and snuggled on the couch. It had a very calming feel to it. Kitchen was functional. Spent hours at the table talking, laughing and having drinks when it rained. They put a shelf in the closet for extra storage items. The bed was super comfortable. Love that I could reach over and grab a book to read. Nicole and Bruce are amazing hosts! I would definitely recommend a stay at Colonial Bay. I’ve been going for years and plan on having many more future visits! ❤️

As much as I love open shelving, I think for a rental it's actually a good thing to have cabinets, because all of the cups get dusty all the time and you need to clean the shelves for every new customer...
You're right, this isn't very practical 🤔 I'd say that about any open kitchen shelving, though, but it looks really nice here!
Welp...If you want your guests happy, you gotta clean it after each customer anyway 😅
@@MadKatherineXD Of course you do, but you generally wouldn't wipe down the insides of cabinets after each guest. You can't afford to offer dusty glasses though, so this will create extra work for the cleaning staff.
Not to mention those shelves that are over the stove: great catchers for smoke problems and grease spatters.
When I stay somewhere we usually end up using most, if not all of the dishes, so they get washed anyway and then wiping the shelves is part of cleaning so it’s not that much extra.
When they started to paint the beams I gasped!! Why?!?
Side note, what kind of paint store doesn't put a dot of paint on the lid so you know which color it is?
All of the paint shops in Argentina and Spain, as far as I have experienced
Idk if you just haven’t bought paint before but most of, if not all places that mix the color for you do that.

okay, yes they addressed it, but it still feels kinda weird that, at the end of the day, this renovation benefits a white family that is profiting off the land? I get that they need to make content and maybe it's not a project to turn down, but.. they could do a little more? Even if it's not a direct monetary support for an organization for the indigenous folks of that area, it could be a more in-depth intro to history and culture. Like, I'm not super familiar with Canadian history, but I'm going to assume it's a similar situation to America, of colonialism and displacement of indigenous communities. If that's the case, I think we need to acknowledge more than just the heritage of the land. We should also speak about the not so glamorous side of it? It felt a little beating around the bush.
I know they tried, but fell a bit short. I think it would be great if they can also bring awareness to these issues too with their platform.

@@TheOrangeblorange I’m not from Canada or the US but from what I understand they handle the situation now very differently from the US, although both go back to colonial histories obviously. I totally understand where you’re coming from and can also understand that this is not an educational/history channel and they don’t want to go into too much depth. It’s definitely a challenge.

Kelsey said it was Algonquin land. Not sure if they meant historically or currently. If it’s current, I wonder if non tribe members have something like long term leases paid to the tribe. I hope so.
From the little I know, Canada is no better than the U.S. in how indigenous people have been and still are treated. Right now AZ republicans are trying to suppress Native American votes.

Speaking as a city millennial who would love to rent a Muskoka cottage. It's not my cabin vacay vibe. And Millenials don't want millennial pink and palm tree wallpaper in a Muskoka cabin either.

This was a miss for me. The chair legs at the dining table and the table being different colors is just wack. Then the silver chairs and lamp mixed with gold frames and coffee table over in the living room looked weird to me. It’s like a thrift store cabin. I’m all for eclectic. But this was just too much for me. Too many colors and textures. I think they should have edited their color pallet down a little. My favorite thing about the makeover was the closet and the hangers 🙈
I’m so glad you two are playing with maximalism! I would consider myself a maximalist in terms of my personal style, but it’s hard to find these types of designs among the top DIY youtubers.

I nearly cried watching dad’s reaction. This is so heartwarming. His reaction was priceless. Everything about this makeover was so good! The wallpaper! The pop of colour. Not a fan of orange but who would’ve thought orange and emerald green compliments each other. Job well done 🥺💛

Mine either, hated the orange, but the whole thing works and I do agree that it's fun for a get away. I love staying in differently designed spaces and would be so happy to walk into a cabin that looked like that.

It’s been over 24 hours since my first watch and I still feel this way. Leave the beams dark and just slap a fresh coat of white on the ceiling. Also I stead of painting the shelves orange in the kitchen they should have just stained them and left them as wood shelves

I hated the combination between the carpet and the wallpaper in the living area. Independently, they were so cute, and that green side table was awesome, but overall, I would not have liked a holiday there. It was too busy for my "holiday" taste.
But if the price was right on you wanted to stay at one of those cottages on the property, which one would you pick?

Kelsey: here’s a hack for hanging a pic that has a wire “rope” on it like that one in the cabin. Take a regular fork🍴. Put the tines on the nail on the wall. The handle then can be used to put that wire “rope” over. Just glide down the handle and onto the nail. Then take the fork off the nail. You’re welcome ☺️.

I wonder how modern bold art would have looked in the frames! I think it could have really added to the room more and kept a cohesive theme, and I thought there would be more done in the bedroom (bold duvet cover perhaps) but that's just me. love the series! esp because it's usually more than just one room space. :)

I would do anything, literally like ANYTHING, to get Kelsey and Becky to come to Mississippi and help me makeover my new home. It’s old and it has so much charm I think, but I just can’t seem to extract it like they can. They’re so talented.
I must say, this is probably my favourite project you guys have ever done! the colors, the furniture! it has so much personality and is the perfect solution for the client, which seemed over the moon! this was a delight to watch.
