This week on Upgrade My Stay we take on a cottage from the 50s!!! This cottage has been rented out for YEARS and loved by many. It already is super cute, but very lived in and really needs some love so that it can continue thriving. The owners of this cottage really didn’t give us any prompts or directions to go in so we thought we’d run with the fact that the cottage is from the 50s and right by a lake and create a retro beach house!! These rental spaces are always our favourite to renovate because we can really step out of our comfort zone and try something that we wouldn’t do elsewhere! Not gonna lie, loving the way it turned out and will probably let this aesthetic slip into my own home!! What kind of space will we take on next? Let us know your predictions below!

Plus, open shelving makes a lot of sense for rentals -- guests don't have to open all the cupboards to find a coffee mug :)
it's a lot of work to keep clean and dust free though.
While I don’t mean to discredit the owners of these cabins, do a quick google search on how clean hotel rooms really are. I’m sure everyone would love to think that their hotel is spotless when you arrive for your holiday, it often isn’t the case, especially when it comes to kitchenware. Good of y’all to be optimistic about the “deep clean between guests” though.
@@missdelaney When you give the place a clean every few days to weeks in between guests I don't think that's as much of an issue as it is for a 'normal' kitchen
@@missdelaney you have to clean thoroughly between guest anyways, so it wouldn't be that big of an issue as in private homes where there is way more stuff that gets forgotten in the back of the cupboard...

What really makes this series for me is that you guys are helping family businesses thrive. Like people will go to these places just to stay there. And the owner can charge a little extra for their new specialty cabins 😍

As an Indigenous person, I just want to say thank you for that brief land acknowledgment. Love this and I hope this helps more individuals think about the Indigenous people, their lands, and current Indigenous affairs and news.

I think it would be interesting to hear your honest thoughts on frustrating moments during projects! I think renovation can be super frustrating and stressful too and I know my partner and I can get a bit moody with each other when we're in the thick of things. I'd love hearing your thoughts on how you deal with frustration during projects and in working together, and how you go about keeping your eyes on the prize. Great work you guys!

At first I was a little hesitant about the 50s theme, but you nailed it!

It's crazy how everytime I start watching one of this episodes I think: "This will never work!" And than it always turns out adorable and cool and amazing!

😉 Don't think it will be an issue. These evergreens are commonly planted along fences and decks. They will create a natural barrier〰️ giving any visitors🫂 a much needed sense of privacy.
🌿They won't expand too much, but they will grow quite tall. They are more of a bush vs tree. 😎They're pretty hardy plants, drought-tolerant 💦, and fairly maintenance free. Although once it reaches the desired height, it's a good idea to keep 'em trimmed on top.

Right On Girls!! 💪🏽 Keep making it happen!💕

Actually, a fun tip I learned from one of my plant groups: apparently, if you dig a square hole for trees when you plant them, the gain height a little faster because the roots have more of the loose soil to spread into. :D
Imagine the coffee table stained like a rich walnut color and staged in front of a huge light grey sectional in a huge open concept living room with vaulted ceilings and a huge floor to ceiling linear fire place. Cause the tables so big lol

Yes, but also no because Cypress (its a tree not a bush) don't have massive roots like for example chestnut or smth, so they will not ruin the porch or temples of the cottage.
I was yelling “oh hell no!” A simple fence would’ve surfficed without the waiting to have privacy and all I thought was MOSQUITOES! Lol

Wait I love this!!! I was worried because the last episode was such a dramatic change and this seemed more subtle but it turned out AMAZING. I love the theme and the incorporation of the old photos. Ugh 10/10
I really wish you had found frames to fit the photos. Those photos were so cool, but all the blank white spaces and the light frame colors distracted from them. I also wish that the color scheme was a little stronger-there were pastels mixed with deep red, brown, and beige, which I personally didn’t think felt cohesive enough. With that being said, I know it takes a ton of effort to finish these makeovers in just a couple days. It still came out well, and the owners loved it, which is what matters! Also, I LOVE that you guys use thrifted items!! It would be so easy to source things from Amazon and other big stores, but you guys go the extra mile to repurpose items, which I really appreciate!

A lot of lakes are green because of the vegetation in the water. It's not dirty.
@@angieemm ehh this looks like it's brown from algae. It's not necessarily dirty but it indicates it's fairly warm and fairly stagnant which is a breeding ground for bacteria and micro organisms. So yeah, I probably wouldn't swim in it (and I adore swimming). But to each their own!
